Happy Birthday Alaric
=Alaric=
It was my birthday, so of course I was required to come out with my two best mates, if only for a little while. Theo and Bruno were by far the only people who could convince me to go to the human city. Usually, we liked to stay near the pack’s territory, you never know what kind of trouble you could run into when you leave the comfort of your own home.
“This place is a local favorite of the young girls.” Theo was more eager to make me a skirt chaser than anyone. I guess that’s what betas are for? “Don’t worry we’ll get you a nice young one. Something plump and-”
“I beg of you to not finish that sentence.” I slap my face sliding my hand slowly down as I wished to just disappear. It was awkward that I being the alpha was the only one left not mated, but then again I just never cared so much.
“Oh please.” Bruno jumped grabbing my shoulder with all his strength. I was taller than him, but he was only my Gamma, I couldn’t expect too much from him but support. “You’ll find the one. You know I never thought I’d find Alex, but that nice piece is something I’d die for.”
“You met her six months ago you pervy fuck.” I shrugged him off. I knew the mating bond was strong, but this was ridiculous. Alex was a nice girl and all, but we had to trade a fair bit of resources and lost one of our witches just to get her. Alex being the Alpha’s youngest daughter was well worth the price. That is according to Bruno at least. She was average to me. Sure he small stature complimented Bruno’s stocky build, and her tanned skin was flawless, but I just didn’t feel anything when I looked at her. She was just another member of my pack. A spoiled member of my pack, but Bruno’s hard-earned mate nonetheless.
“I loved her the moment she was born.” Bruno closed his eyes smiling as he recalled seeing her, “You know Theo is also way ahead of you in the mate department.”
“Don’t remind me.” I rolled my eyes looking over to my beta.
“What’s wrong with Sheena?” His hands withdrew to slap Bruno for mentioning her, but fell short when I gave him the death glare. We were supposed to be respectable members of society. The last thing we needed was to spend a night in jail.
“Please, you two are such bunnies. Ever since you got married you’ve been such a drag.” While we both loved the fact Sheena was already a member of the pack, they were inseparable from the moment they had their first shift. They got married days after Sheena turned 18 and already were on their way to having a small litter. Sheena had one pup already and with another on the way Theo couldn’t be happier.
“We got married three years ago you dork!” Theo grabbed Bruno’s neck into a choke hold but dropped him when a large group of humans walked past us.
“Would you two act house trained for five minutes!” I barked slapping them both on the back of the head, “I’ll use my alpha voice, don’t make me.” Neither of them could resist my orders when I brought out the alpha wolf. They were hardwired to follow my every command. It certainly made for an easy time with arguments.
The amount of humans gathering was growing exponentially and I was fully prepared to have to leave early. Human’s had no idea we existed, they didn’t need to know. KNowing would put unneeded stress on their lives. As long as we kept pack drama away from the humans they didn’t need to care anyway.
This place was certainly a far cry from our usual dinner parties. My family loved a pack get together, but this bacchanalia was something quite foreign to me. Girls were dressed in bare minimum clothing so many bare midriffs and cleavage. It would be hard pressed to find enough fabric in this crowd to cover any woman decently.
“How on this earth did your mates allow you to bring me here?” I took another look at a woman passing me as she entered the nightclub. Her scent was heavily saturated in alcohol and a recreational substance that sent a sting to my nostrils.
They both winked, grabbing my arms to drag me further into the den of debauchery. “What the girls don’t know wont hurt them.”
That’s when I entered the largest cesspool of filth and grime anyone could imagine. Sweat ran down the foreheads of everyone here adding to the pungent odor. To the casual customer this wouldn’t have been an issue, to us wolves however we were prone to the faintest scents. Throughout the room there was something else lingering in the air, something I couldn’t quite place my finger on. That smell, it was like a field of lavender with freshly cut roses still kissed with morning dew.
“Whoa Alaric?” Bruno snapped his fingers in front of my face a few times to bring me back to reality. “Dude, it’s like you’ve seen your mate.”
I looked between them and they were both bright eyed flashing their pearly white teeth ready to tackle the woman who was drawing my attention. They’d sure be the ones to know when someone found their mate. I couldn’t give them the satisfaction though, it was terrible to think that I was about to become some lovesick puppy over some skirt that was probably not covering herself up enough. Then the thought crossed my mind. Oh for f**k’s sake. She was in this crowd grinding up on some stick boy in a half shirt and miniskirt. I just knew it.
“Where is she?” Theo looked around trying to see if my attention was grabbed to any one person. “Where?”
I scanned the crowd, with so many people I couldn’t see all the way through, everyone was so tightly packed in. “I don’t know.” My thoughts were growing more frantic by the second. Some s*x crazed person was going to take her hoe tonight. They were going to touch her, they were going to be with her.
“Come on.” Bruno walked forward making his way into the heart of the dance floor. No one struck my fancy so we made our way over to the side.
“This is ridiculous!” I slammed my fist down on the bar only to have my arm tapped by the bartender.
“Hey, buddy. Take it out on something else.”
I turned to see the most beautiful woman ever in a button up shirt wearing a black apron tied midway up her stomach. I leaned over to look and was surprised to see she was in long black slacks.
“Eyes up here John!” She tapped me again and every needle prick sent a shock through my heart telling me I was about to be in trouble. That voice as horse and shrill as it was right now I knew was only because of the music. She was a kind hearted woman, someone I wanted to get to know.
“Sorry,” Bruno leaned in pulling me backward, a move he knew he’d regret doing once we could go back to our werewolf personas. “He doesn’t get out much. It’s his birthday tonight.”
“Oh really?” She grabbed a glass from below filling it quickly with tequila before sliding it to me. “Happy birthday.”
“Alaric.” Theo corrected as my words continued to elude me.
“Oh fancy.” She smiled with those sweet full ips of hers. That hair pulled back in a ponytail allowed just a few strands to fall forward clinging to her face. Oh how I envied those hair strands. “What are you boys drinking? Can’t just sit you, gotta order something.”
This was where things were about to get complicated. She was clearly a human, a human girl who had no knowledge of werewolves, mates, or packs. Her world was going to change and it was going to be my fault. I knew I couldn’t live without her, once she was like me she’d see it too.
“Hey!” waving her hand in front of my face she tried desperately to grab my attention. “Sir, are you ordering something?”
I shook my head and she took it as a rejection. The two dumbasses who joined me pulled me away from the love of my life. Every inch farther from her ached my heart. Once she was out of view I was finally able to concentrate on myself. My movement returned, and my voice finally was found again.
“She is my mate.” I finally choked out.
“Yeah,” Bruno joked, “Either that or you suffered a stroke.” He slapped my back as I wiped my face. Every bit of her still lingered in the air, I wished that I didn’t have to leave her so soon.
“What do we do?” Theo turned waiting for orders. If she was a werewolf it would have been so much easier.
“She needs to be brought to the pack.” I lowered my voice making sure any humans around didn’t catch on to the kidnapping plan unfolding.
Bruno agreed, but there was a caveat, “Well yeah, but we aren’t some blood suckers ready to steal away a pretty lady in the night. She’s going to have an issue with us just snatching her up.”
“I don’t give a f**k!” I yelled unable to control the volume of my voice, “She needs to be brought to the pack and she needs to be brought there tonight!”
Now it was time for Bruno to change his position, “Okay, so we all agree she needs to come with us, but right now it’s too risky.”
“Explain yourself Gamma.” He needed to be reminded where his place on the totem pole was.
“Humans are always leery of us. They carry that pepper spray, those tasers, and don’t get me started on self defense classes. We need some time to stake out the place. Let’s be smart about this.” As much as I hated it Bruno was right. We came here unprepared. “Look, the full moon is in three days. Let’s get a plan together and then we can come back afterward. She’s got a good head on her shoulders.”
A good head didn’t matter when it was in a crowd of crazed d**k heads, “I want one of you watching her at all times.” I looked at each of them ready to use my alpha voice if they took any issue, “Obie will help you too. Esther’s always a calming presence.”
“Okay okay.” THeo laughed, “Let’s not bring the pack out here to meet her. Obie and I will take the day shift. I’ll stay here and follow her back home. This won’t be easy.”
Bruno laughed, “We haven’t had a good ol fashioned human napping in so many years. I think we’re all out of practice.”
Great, I was being reduced to this worried child, scared for everything that could happen to her. If something did happen and I wasn’t there to save her my life would be over. She was my everything, each passing moment away from her was torture. I needed her to be near me. I looked at Bruno and Theo, those two had kept their cool. Why on earth was I the only one acting this way with my mate? A question I was definitely going to ask my father and mother when we returned later tonight.
