Chapter 13

[Alex]

When Serena’s friends left, I could tell she was sad. I asked her about it several times, but she said she was fine.

The rest of the week at school went very quickly. I was just dreading not seeing my mate for a couple days. With the full moon on Saturday, I could already feel Ryder pushing me to the limits. I really didn’t want her to go and so I spent all my time with her, following her around like a lost puppy. *Don’t let mate leave* Ryder growled. But I couldn’t force her to stay because I don’t want to be that person.

On Wednesday, Serena came over to my house before she left. “Goodbye Alex” she said with a small frown. “Bye Serena” I whispered, pulling her towards me and burying my face into the crook of her neck and inhaling her beautiful scent. I held her to me for a couple of minutes, ignoring her attempts of pulling away. “Ok go before I change my mind” I stated. Turning away from her as she walked out the door.

[Serena]

I walked out of Alex’s house, but before I could get anywhere my wrist was yanked back and I was in Alex’s arms. “Where do you think you are going mate?” Ryder growled out.

“Ryder, I am going to see my friends. I’ll be back before you know it” I breathed out.

“You are not going to leave.”

“I will be back before the full moon, don’t worry” I replied.

“Fine. I’m going to miss you. Be careful” he stated and let go of me. I gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and stared into his black eyes. “I love you mate” he said softly and I turned and walked away.

I was on the train for 40 minutes before I got off. It felt terrible leaving Alex and Ryder, Ryder especially as he didn’t want to let me go. But, nevertheless, I arrived and was greeted with not only my close friends, but also people I knew. “Serena!” They all shouted and I was embraced by my friendship group : Max, Daniel, Lily and Molly.

“I am so happy that you took my advice to come alone. It means that you can tell us anything without worrying about offending him” Max whispered and I just nodded as it is easier to agree then have an argument about it. We dwindled about and then proceeded to get food. My mind wandered to Alex, wondering how he was and what he was doing.

[Alex]

Everything inside me wants to go to her. Ryder has been on edge since Serena walked away. It seems as if everyone has been avoiding me, almost sensing the overwhelming amount of emotions I’m feeling. Suddenly all my emotions simmered down as I answered a call from Serena. “Hi gorgeous” I said.

“Hi, how is everything there?” Serena asked.

“It’s fine. I miss you so much. Can’t you come back already?” I moaned and she chuckled.

“I’ve only been gone for less than a day”

“That is less than a day too long. Are you safe? Where are you?” I asked.

“I’m at—-“ she started, but before she could finish Molly interrupted “ sorry Serena can’t speak right now it’s time for fun” and ended the call. I was infuriated and before I knew it I held a crushed phone. *Go get mate. I want mate now. Get her. We can’t protect her from here* Ryder demanded. I sighed and held my head in my hands. She would be fine. Ryder was so close to surfacing that I didn’t hear Darius come in. “Hey bro” he called.

“Get out” I growled in a harsh tone.

“Woah, chill dude. Come on let’s go and get a drink, it looks like you need it” he said. I gave him a death glare and closed my eyes trying to push Ryder down, but without my mate near it was proving to be difficult. He continued “ Serena is fine. She isn’t alone, Alex. She’ll be back soon. Think of the full moon. She’ll watch Ryder running with the pack, right near the front.” This finally caused Ryder to simmer down allowing me to reply at last “ I don’t think so, not this time at least. I’m not sure she is ready for that.”

“That sucks, I was really hoping we could have our first time running as a pack together.”

“Oh well, my mate comes first. Anyways, let’s go out for a bit. If we don’t I think I’m going to go and get Serena right now” I stated and we got up and left.

Darius took me too a club. Ryder was so preoccupied with worry about Serena that he hadn’t even realised we left. I just needed to keep my mind off of her as best as possible. *Get out of here, f*****g i***t. Mate won’t like this. I will tell her you’ve been here* Ryder growled. I just sighed and replied * I’m not doing anything. Calm down. We’re just going to have a drink. I don’t know where she is so she won’t know where I am*

*Stupid human. You would dare to sit in here while sluts are shaking their arses all over the place. Mate will reject us. You don’t deserve her* Ryder roared and I ignored him. I’m not looking at anyone and I just want to have fun with Darius, who had already left me to dance with a girl. I smirked and went to join him on the dance floor. We danced for hours until Darius decided to head to the bathroom with a girl. I was quite tipsy, but Ryder was constantly growling at me things like *get out of here. I hate you human. Waste of space* All of a sudden someone barged into me, almost knocking me off my feet. “It watch where you are going” I scowled pushing the man back. This very quickly escalated into a fight. After a couple punches, I landed another one straight on his nose and felt the crunch of it break. The man slumped to the floor and I didn’t see him move. Everyone was staring at me so I quickly mindlinked Darius to tell him I’ll meet him back at home. I was surprised Ryder didn’t take control at all in the fight and when I asked him he simply said * I love mate and she is going to need me when she finds all this out so I let you deal with it* Finally, I was home.

[Serena]

I have tried calling Alex back so many times, but it just goes straight to answer phone. We had such a long day and so we were all sleeping by 11pm. It is so weird not seeing Alex or even talking to him. Even seeing his eyes turning black and then all his mannerisms change when Ryder was out. Ryder was the sweetest to me, even though I’m sure he is scary to others.

We were up by 10am. Me, Max, Daniel, Molly and Lilly decided to go to the cinema to watch a rerun of Annabelle, even though they know I hate scary films. Halfway through the film, my phone started buzzing and I was more than happy to have an excuse to leave for a bit. “Hi Darius“ I said into the phone.

“Hey Serena. How you doing there?” Darius replied.

“All good here. What about you guys?” I asked.

“Well the full moon is coming soon and the tension is up. Alex is seriously tripping without you. I mean I ain’t gonna snitch on my guy, but he really misses you. Don’t tell him I called you”

“Hey Darius” I heard Alex say in the background before Darius ended the call. What is going on with Alex? That made me want to go back at that second, but instead I went back into the cinema. After all, I was leaving in a day and a half. Alex can last that long without me.
