Lennox's POV It was the middle of the night when I heard a gunshot at the door of the orphanage. I was really scared. I checked to see if everyone was still asleep on their beds or maybe I was just imagining things, but it was real especially when I heard the door to our room being banged on aggressively. I was too scared to open the door until they broke in. Everyone was wide awake now, and we were all led to the big sitting room by some masked men. Their appearance was exactly like that of armed robbers and they most likely were. Everyone had their heads down, trembling in fear. There were muffled sobs too. "I thought you said there was no money in this orphanage?" one of the men, who seemed to be their leader asked coldly. Mrs. Owen was shaking in fear. She didn’t know whether to speak or stay silent. They had searched the orphanage moments ago before bringing out two bags of money, that money was our only hope of survival and we didn’t know when the government would send another, even though they promised to keep checking in on us. “Please sir… that money is our only hope of survival. Please don’t take it away,” I pleaded, my voice shaking. Everyone else joined me, begging with tears in their eyes. “Shut your silly mouth now!” the leader roared, irritated by our voices and cries. Even the little kids who had no idea what was going on had started crying too. “I said shut your mouths!” he roared again, this time pointing the gun directly at us. We all went silent, terrified for our lives. But I couldn’t stop myself. I mumbled another plea hoping they would change their minds. But no. The gun was pointed straight at me. And before I could even understand what was happening… the trigger was pulled and I was shot. The armed robbers were out of the orphanage. *** “I’m putting you in charge of the orphanage. Please, take good care of the children… as you’ve always done,” Mrs. Owen said, wriggling in pain. The reality hit me hard. Mrs. Owen took the bullet meant for me. “No!!!” My voice came out loud filled with pain and rage toward the robbers. “Lennox, wake up.” I heard Miss Nora's worried voice yelling as she tired to pull back to reality. I woke up with a start, “easy easy Lennox, it's just a dream.” Miss Nora said patting my back gently to calm me down. After few minutes I became calm, and my mind became focused. “What happened to you Lennox?” Miss Nora asked gently, making me confused. Sensing my confusion she said “We found unconscious three days ago at Mrs Owens graveside.” “Three days? You mean I've being out for three days?” I asked Miss Nora with widened eyes. “Yes.” She nodded, “What happened Lennox?” She asked again. “I can't remember anything Miss Nora.” I lied, I can't put Miss Nora in danger. “It's alright Lennox don't stress yourself to remember, everything will be fine.” Miss Nora said hugging me. I continued working daily saving up for my school fees and also supporting the orphanage too and Miss Nora has been helpful. Two older girls decided to work part time too after they had closed from school. Everyone was living well in the orphanage untill I realized that no matter how hard I work, the money I earn would never be enough for my school fees. I need to think if how to go back to school. My mind flashed back to Vincent. The last time we saw was the first time we met. I was truly hoping to meet him again maybe he can help find a solution to my education even if it's by scholarship. Speaking of scholarship, I use Miss Nora's laptop to browse for schools that are currently running scholarship program but it's either that their scholarship form has closed or maybe it got cancelled. One fateful day, I met two girls at the restaurant, they always came to dine and were so full of energy, chatting about almost everything happening in New York City. I don't really listen to their conversation but today, I wanted to hear what they're always talking about. “I heard that Wesley High School is giving out scholarships to the less privileged." One of them said. “I thought they won't reduce their standard. They're always advertising that the school is meant for rich kids so what changed?” The second girl said with a hiss that shows that she was clearly annoyed. "I really don't know. Rich people have their ways of making decisions. They might wake up from the wrong side of the bed one day and conclude that the scholarship would be cancelled….” The girls were saying but I wasn't listening to them anymore. The only thought that filled my mind was to apply for the scholarship online. When I got to the orphanage by evening, I used Miss Nora's laptop to browse for the school and apply for the scholarship. I made sure to follow all the processes before submitting and finally, I have to write an entrance exam. I need to start preparing for the exam. I really don't want to lose this opportunity. To my surprise few days after my application, Vincent came over to the orphanage for a short visit. “I thought you've forgotten about me." I said with a small laugh after we had shared our greetings. “I dare not. I was kind of occupied with school activities. “Okay." I mouthed “Speaking of school, how's yours going?" He asked. “I applied for a scholarship at a school I can't really remember it's name." I said trying to remember the name of the school while Vincent made jest of me. "You applied for a scholarship and you can't even remember the name of the school.” He said bursting out laughing. "It's not funny.” I said pouting my lips "I'm sorry.” He said and continued laughing while I stared at him. I found his laughter cute and the happiness that filled his face. And finally, I decided to take a look at his eyes. They are beautiful. God really took his time to create his eyes in a beautiful art. Vincent had stopped laughing all this while and was staring at me too and I don't even notice. “You're pretty." He said softly breaking me away from my thoughts. I quickly turned my face to the other direction and blushed and of course, I could hear his soft giggle. “I think I have to go now. We will see some other time." He said standing up from his seat. I stared at him sadly. I don't want him to leave now. “I will come see you more often." He assured like he had just read my mind. “Okay bye." I said and waved him good bye. The day for the exam came and I was neatly dressed up. Miss Nora and the kids had prayed for my success before I left the orphanage. On getting to the school, the environment was kind of quiet. I was expecting to see a large number of people coming to write the scholarship exam but no I was the only one. Did I arrive late? I entered the school's office and I saw someone dressed up like the secretary. I decided to ask her what was happening. “Ma'am…” she didn't let me complete what I wanted to say before cutting me off. "I thought we made it clear to everyone that applied for the scholarship that it got cancelled through their mails?” She was annoyed and I was looking lost. “Cancelled?” I asked confused and lost
