Run
Lennox's POV
I stood frozen in shock, as one of the plates I perfectly balanced, on the tray I was carrying slipped and shattered on the floor with a loud clang. My heart sank. I knew I was in trouble.
My boss's voice boomed from the kitchen, her anger quite visible as she stormed towards me. "I knew right from the start you'd be a disaster!" Her face twisted in a scowl, her eyes blazing with fury.
Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes as I trembled steading the tray in my hands, while surveying the mess I'd made. "I'm sorry ma'am, It was a mistake."
"A mistake?" Her voice dripped with venom. "Just like you, and your late parents." She spat, with a look of disgust.
Her words cut deep. How dare her?
"Your whole life and this godridden restaurant is a mistake too,” I said sharply, damning the consequences that would follow.
The restaurant fell silent, the only sound the soft snickers of the other workers, could be heard.
My boss's face turned red with rage, her hand raised to slap me. I braced myself, ready to feel the sting of her palms...
But the slap never came, rather a deep, masculine voice intervened behind me, "That's enough! Stop bullying the girl." The voice said with a force, that compel the listener to obey.
I spined round sharply to see the face of my saviour, when I unfortunately bumped into someone else.
A sweet, refreshing scent enveloped me, and I looked up to see a man with piercing eyes and chiseled features. His beauty was devilishly captivating.
"Watch where you're going next time," he said softly, his expression cold, but his eyes crinkled at the corners.
I felt my cheeks flush as he smiled slightly, and before I could steady myself, the tray slipped from my grip, and the remaining dishes crashed to the floor.
I turned to check my boss’s face, forgetting the demigod instantly, she was already fuming with rage, as expected.
Her face turned purplish-red with rage. "I swear on my left palm, I'll kill you today, Lennox!" She bent to pick up a shard of plate, her eyes flashing with fury.
Without waiting to see her next action, I did the only thing that came to my mind.
“Run.”
I hastily ran out of the restaurant without looking back, my heart pounding heavily, the purpose of working part-time in the restaurant, nudging me with heavy heartache.
I remembered few weeks ago when Miss Nora called me to her office, and explained our heart wrenching situation to me.
"Lennox!" She called while I nodded in response.
"There is a slight change in government, and just like that our orphanage has been forgotten.
The old days we thought were gone has come crawling back, feeding became difficult, and paying y'all school fees is almost impossible.
We have to start sacrificing one thing for the other." She cried holding my hands.
“It’s heartbreaking to say this out loud, but it’s the only solution we have right now,” Miss Nora announced.
“There’s no money to pay everyone’s school fees, so I’d like the younger kids to stop schooling for now, once the seniors graduate from high school, the younger ones can continue.”
Her words didn’t sit well with me, why would she ask the younger ones to drop out?
They’re just at the basics of learning, and stopping now could ruin their foundation.
I removed my hand from her's slowly, heart pounding. “I’ll stop schooling so the kids won’t be affected,” I said firmly.
“They deserve to continue, I can always return to school some other time.”
"You're not doing that, Lennox. I've seen you sacrifice a lot for the kids, when you are just a kid yourself" Miss Nora said, her eyes lined with sadness.
“One thing I noticed about Mrs. Owen when she was still alive was that she always thought of us first before thinking of herself, and I want to do the same.
Permit me to work part time to save up for my fees and also support the orphanage too.” I said, and Miss Nora's mouth was slightly open.
I started working part time, and I was exposed to the world.
My name is Lennox Hensley! Yes I'm an orphan, a kid, but I knew what I had to do. I had to work hard, so as to pay my fees and help the orphanage.
But for now I had to run, else if my madam catches up with me I'm so dead.
I continued running for God knows how long, when I heard his voice again.
“Hey! You should stop running now, you're far from the restaurant already," His soft voice said behind me.
It was the boy from the restaurant the one I’d bumped into.
Wait... had he been running after me this whole time? I asked myself, but decided against the thought.
I have a very sensitive ear, if he had been running behind me I would heard his footsteps, and besides his voice was too calm, while I was panting heavily. Maybe a car had conveyed him. I concluded within myself.
I stopped running and laughed nervously.
“Her looks could kill.” I said..
“My name is Vincent Ashwood,” he said, extending his hand for a handshake.
“My name is Lennox Hensley. Nice meeting you,” I replied.
“How about we go somewhere quiet and have a little talk?” he suggested.
I thought about it for a moment, then shrugged my shoulders, we walked slowly to a nearby park and sat on a bench.
“You're a brave girl,” Vincent said. “I've always seen your madam insult her workers, but you're the first person to talk back to her.”
“Honestly, I don’t even know where that bravery came from, I was just annoyed when she called me a mistake.” I replied.
“I might have lost my parents at a young age, but that doesn’t make me a mistake.
My parents brought me into this world so I could excel and become someone great even if they weren't here to walk that journey with me.”
“You’re an orphan?” Vincent asked.
I nodded.
“That explains why a young girl like you works at the restaurant,” he said quietly.
“My late guardian at the orphanage didn’t want me to work,” I explained.
“But I had to, things haven’t been going well at the orphanage."
I want to support the kids, I even had to sacrifice my education so the younger ones wouldn’t drop out.”
“You dropped out of school because of them? What about you? Won’t you complete your education?” Vincent asked, concerned.
“I’m out of school for the main time, and besides, I’m already saving up for my school fees." I replied.
“Even at that, you’re still carrying a lot of burden, I wish I could help." Vincent said softly, and I was forced to stare at his face.
How can a stranger want to help me without expecting anything in return?
Why I'm even talking much about myself to him, what's going on my my secretive nature?
“In what way?” I asked curiously, even when I decided not to talk to him anymore.
“Your education, I wish there was a way you could join my school, but the school fees are just too expensive.”
“Don’t worry about that, I can always go back to school, and thanks for the care." I said, standing up from the bench.
“We should see more often. I want us to be friends, perhaps even more than friends.” Vincent said, with a gentle smile.
“I'd love that!" I exclaimed. "But since I don’t have a phone, I’ll describe the orphanage for you.”
“That would be better,” he replied, standing up too.
And just like that, we parted ways.
Is this the beginning to a beautiful friendship, or would he still leave as others, I loved and cherished left.
