Marcus let out a slow sigh. “You want the truth?”
“Yes.”
Marcus leaned back, fingers steepled. “I’ve always believed in Kane Enterprises. You and I, we built it together. But I saw what you were risking.”
“You mean… love?”
“Yes,” Marcus admitted. “Lila. That photo. The gala. The public leaks. You were choosing her over the company, and I couldn’t stand by. Not while the board and shareholders were blind to the consequences.”
Alexander’s eyes narrowed. “So your ‘betrayal’ was… loyalty?”
Marcus’ smirk was tight. “Loyalty to the empire, not to you. I knew you’d act recklessly. I knew Seraphina would exploit it. I had to hedge the risk. I made sure there was leverage—just in case your emotions clouded your judgment.”
Lila, standing near the doorway, felt a chill. Marcus hadn’t just acted against Alexander—he had used her. Weaponized her existence.
“And the board?” Alexander asked quietly.
“They were already swayed. I just pushed the numbers. Made the threat real. Enough to force action.”
Alexander’s jaw tightened. “So this was never personal.”
Marcus shook his head slowly. “Everything in this world is personal. You just didn’t realize the cost until now.”
Lila’s Reaction
Lila stepped forward. “You risked me. My career. My life in this city.”
Marcus met her gaze evenly. “Collateral damage. I warned you it wasn’t safe.”
She laughed bitterly. “Collateral damage? I’m not collateral. I’m a person. And if you thought using me against him would sway him… you miscalculated.”
Her eyes met Alexander’s. “We’re stronger because we see the battlefield clearly now. You can manipulate markets, but you can’t manipulate us.”
Marcus’ smirk faded. “We’ll see.”
