The New Girl

The sound of my phone buzzing woke me up. I groaned as I picked up my phone to silence it. Melly called me four times already and Brian once. I called Melly’s house phone. “Hey, Melly,” I said when she answered the other line. “Girl we got a problem. You have little time to fix it either.” She said. “What is it now?” I sat up in the bed and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. “Just come over, I will explain then.” She said. I hung up, sighing; I had to first go down and confront my parents. They would surely ask me a bunch of questions. Then I would go to Melly’s. I grabbed some clothes out of my closet and went to take a shower. When I came downstairs to my surprise only my mother was there. I thought surely my father would be ready to hound me about not finding my mate. Maybe this would be easier than I thought. Mom wouldn’t pester me as much. She always knew to back off and give me space. I felt bad for deceiving them, but it was my life. I should be able to make my own decisions. “Hey Izzy Bell you missed breakfast, so I put you a plate to the side.” She said using her nickname for me. I popped two slices of toast in the toaster as I heated my food. Then I made myself a sandwich with my eggs and bacon. Grabbing a paper towel, I wrapped my sandwich in it and headed for the door. “Mom, I have to go to Melly’s she let me use her car last night and I need to take it back,” I called out. “Izzy wait.” She yelled back. “Mom, I don’t want to talk about it right now. Can we talk later maybe?” I asked. “Yes, honey, I was only going to ask if you needed a ride home later. Your father had a last-minute meeting with Alpha Stevens; he could swing by and pick you up on the way home.” She said. I am sure he would love that, but I didn’t much feel like being stuck in the car listening to my father drone on and on about not finding my mate. “I am probably going to be over there a while. Melly found her mate and she can’t wait to tell me all about it.” I said. It wasn’t actually a lie. But the look of pity on my mother’s face made me feel bad all the same. I hated lying to my parents. Sure I did sometimes, but it was usually about stupid stuff. I hugged my mother and breathed a sigh of relief when I was finally out the door. *** We were sitting on Melly’s bed. Her mother was at work, and her father was at the meeting with Alpha Stevens. So we had the house to ourselves. “So do you have any idea what this meeting is about?” I asked her. Alpha Stevens rarely called meetings outside of our scheduled ones unless there was a problem. So I was curious. “Yep. That’s why I called you over, well that and to get my car and stuff back. Alpha Derek is going to be coming here in a few days and staying.” She said. That made sense. Whenever another Alpha came to visit, there were always formalities. They had to plan and stuff. “I’m glad it’s nothing serious,” I said as I sent a text to Brian apologizing for leaving last night without saying goodbye. I knew that was why he called me earlier unless he wanted to nag me about smoking again. Probably both. “Are you even listening to me, Izzy?” Melly asked me. “Sorry. I was texting back Brian, he called me earlier, and I didn’t get the chance to call him back.” I said defensively. “I said Alpha Derek; your mate is coming here in a few days. He is going to visit some smaller packs first. Brad told me this morning. Brad will come with him then.” She said. I suddenly felt light-headed. I could feel my heart beating out my chest and I knew a panic attack was coming on. If my father found out, there was no way I could get out of this. It was Monday morning, and I was standing outside of school waiting on Melly. She was going to introduce me to the girl who made the potion. Hopefully, she will help me. I will pay for her help. I couldn’t believe he was traveling around the packs in our State looking for me. All I had to do was avoid him while he was here. It sounded simple enough, and if I had more of that potion it would make things easier. Once he’s gone, I could get on with my life. “You think it’s that easy?” My wolf said, startling me. Ever since I fled the party, my wolf has been silent. I knew it upset her, but she needed to understand my opinions matter too. “No one said this would be easy, but I will make it happen.” I snarled back at her in my mind. “We will see about that. You can’t defy Selene, our Goddess...” She began, but I just tuned her out. Kyle was walking towards me with a couple of the guys. “Hey, Izzy!” He greeted me as he leaned up against the little red Honda parked next to me. Kyle was no doubt happy he found his mate. He had always talked about how happy he would be when he did. He stopped having serious relationships about a year ago because he didn’t want to waste anyone’s time or hurt their feelings when he found his mate. “Have you seen Melly? She is meeting me here.” I asked him. “Nope, but we still have time before school starts, you know her, she always comes right before the bell, anyway.” He said. Melly was always the last of our group to show up, but I thought since we had things to do she would be here earlier. Tyler and Malik were staring at a car that just pulled in. It was a minivan, but it looked like they had stripped it of all its paint, and beaten it to death. I had never seen it before and wondered who it belonged to. “Dude, we should so ask Coach to let us paint that in the shop,” Tyler said to Kyle. Malik just stood there and stared at it in a daze. I mean sure it stood out, but I wouldn’t stare at it. Maybe the driver didn’t have any money, or maybe they just didn’t care. I took out my iPhone and sent a text to Melly, Where are you? The guys are driving me nuts. “Whoa, dude, she is hot.” Tyler whistled. I looked up to see what had got his attention when I see a girl with long blond hair gets out of the car. She was about my height, five feet, and three inches. She was wearing a cute little dress that came just to her knees. I recognized it immediately. It was not a dress someone poor would wear for sure, and it made me smile that she had driven up in that van, but had on an outfit that cost more than the van did. She dropped her bag, and Malik ran up to help her. She was nervous, I’m sure it was from being the new girl. I couldn’t tell from this distance if she was human, or a Were like me. I went to help her get away from Malik, who seemed to only make her nervous. “Hi. I’m Isabella, but just call me Izzy.” I said to her as I went up to her. “I’m uh Lacey.” She replied in a small voice. She was a human, which was fine by me. I pulled her along with me and she breathed a sigh in relief. Malik followed close behind, and I was sure that she was his mate. Humans felt the pull too, but with this being her first day in a new school and all he needed to relax a bit. I shot him a glance, telling him to back off a bit. “Come on, let me introduce you to everyone,” I said to her as we walked up to where everyone was now standing, including Melly. “This is Lacey everyone,” I said as they all began introducing themselves. “Can I paint your car in the shop class?” Tyler asked rudely. “Oh, I wouldn’t waste your time. My dad made me drive it after I wrecked mine. He wants to teach me a lesson,” She said a little embarrassed. “What kind of car did you have before?” Tyler asked her. I would have to remember to slap him later; he was a dufus. He didn’t think before he spoke. Malik was more the quiet, serious type, and I always wondered how he and Tyler got along so well. Tyler could talk you to hell and back. But usually, where you see Tyler you will see Malik unless Tyler was off somewhere with his mate Mandy. They had already mated a few months back and usually glued to the hip. If it weren’t for her being gone visiting her dad, she would be here right now. Mandy’s dad was the Alpha of another pack when he didn’t find his true mate, he fell in love with Mandy’s mom. A Rogue murdered her mate, but when Mandy was three, he met his true mate and left her mom. That was why I thought mates were Bullshit. I mean, my mom told me they were so in love; he treated her mom like she was a Queen, then one day BAM! He didn’t love her anymore and all because he met his mate. It was heartless. It devastated her mother for many years, but it worked out because she met another wolf who lost his mate and they have been together ever since. “A Ferrari. Can you believe she has a Ferrari?” Tyler exclaimed loudly. I just laughed. Some things never change. I thought Malik and Lana would make a good couple, though. They both seemed shy. Though you would never guess Lana was shy by the way she dressed. It was not slutty or anything; it was just not your typical shy girl. She was a shy, confident girl, and I liked that. “Hey Izzy, I need to go to my locker. Can you come with me?” Melly asked me. “That’s code for girl talk, Melly is going to tell you all about her new... man.” Tyler laughed. I knew he almost said mate but changed it at the last minute since humans were present. “I will walk you to get your schedule and show you around,” Malik told Lana. “Alright, guys see you later. Lana, I will try to find you later and we can compare schedules.” I said as I waved bye to my friends. I was sitting in third period, my Government class. It was hard to concentrate on what I was reading. My mind was on everything but school right now. After we had left Melly told me she had not seen her friend yet. It was making me nervous. What if she didn’t find her in time? What if she had no more of the potion? My life would be over; because my father would make damn sure I mated to the Alpha. Just then a note fell on my book. I turned to see who wrote it, but everyone looked busy reading their textbook. I shrugged my shoulders as I opened the note. Mr. Hughes looked up from his desk as if he could hear the noise of the paper unfolding. His eyes were raised as he looked around the room. I quickly shoved the note in my book and pretending to be reading. I would just have to read it later. I went to lunch today. On two days out of the week, I got to leave at lunch. I had almost enough credits to graduate already, so I had a few half days. But I wanted to check on the new girl and talk to Melly. I am still curious about who this witch is. “You have graced us with your presence today, I see” Kyle laughed as I walked up to the table with my lunch in hand. “Yea, I couldn’t leave Lana alone with you guys on her first day, where is she?” I asked, looking around the room. “Malik took her to get something to eat. I think they’re mates.” He whispered. “No s**t Sherlock, you think so?” I rolled my eyes at playfully smacked his arm. Charlotte, Melly, and Rachel came up then and took a seat. We had a mix of friends. Charlotte and Rachel were both humans. Brian was also human, but he didn’t always take lunch with us. The rest are all werewolves. Tyler had lunch detention for the next week, so he was not here.  He put shaving cream all over the Principal’s office, Rachel helped him. Tyler and Rachel were neighbors growing up, and if anyone messed with Rachel, well, he always took care of it. So when Rachel got blamed for cheating on a test and suspended for two days, Tyler got his revenge on Principal Walters. It was his girlfriend’s daughter who was cheating, but he would not suspend her daughter. “When does Mandy come back?” I asked. “You just had to ask. Tyler’s going crazy without her. She will be back on Monday.” Charlotte rolled her eyes as she dipped her carrots in ranch dressing. She always ate healthily. “You’d think they’re married, they can’t go a few days without each other,” Lana and Malik were walking from the lunch line towards us, and I couldn’t resist thinking how cute they looked together. Since Lana was a human Malik would have to date her a bit. She would feel a pull towards him, but it would not be as strong for her yet. It was more realistic to me than normal mating is, at least. “How was your first day so far?” I asked her, smiling. “It’s been great, Malik has been showing me around, and everyone is nice.” She answered sitting her tray down at the table. Malik was blushing. Malik had creamy brown skin and blue eyes. It was a beautiful combination. The girls fawned all over him all the time, but he was shy. He opened up much more when you knew him, but he was still very modest. It was always a relief since the guys were usually bragging about their selves all the time. Malik didn’t need to, though. Everyone sat around talking about Lana’s van and hanging out this weekend. I asked Melly if she had any luck yet. “So can she help us?” I asked her through our link. “Yes, I will pick you up after school. We are going to her house.” She said back. I feel relieved. I wasn’t sure when this Alpha “mate” of mine was going to get here, but I wanted to be ready.
