“Hey Honey, how was school.” My mom asked.
“Great. We got a cool new girl. She’s also Malik’s mate.” I said as I poured a glass of chocolate milk.
“I wasn’t told about any new wolves,” my mom said, puzzled.
“She’s human,” I said
“Well, your father wants to speak with you. He’s back in his office,” she said.
I grabbed my glass and took it with me. My father had an office off the side of our library. He worked from home on some days. He was partners in a few companies with our Alpha. The Alpha owned many companies, and pack members worked in these companies or their own. That is how our pack maintained money.
I was sure I knew what my father was going to talk about. I would just assume to get it over with. It was time to implement my plan.
“Dad, mom said you wanted to see me,” I said as I entered his office.
His desk was dark wood, and though his office wasn’t huge, it was a comfy size. He had a leather loveseat that sat against the wall. The walls were bright white. He always said he couldn’t work with all those fancy colors. White made the room look brighter, and saved money on lights, though we were not hurting for money. My parents made a very good living.
“I was wondering how the dance was. Your mother told me you did not meet your mate. I am just... surprised.” He said.
I put on my best solemn face and said, “No. I didn’t. But maybe my mate isn’t here, maybe I need to travel and find him.” I said.
He regarded me slightly then said, “You know, Alpha Derek will be coming to visit. The weird thing is, his mate was at the dance, but she escaped. He is trying to find her.” He said.
I knew my father well, and I knew he was trying to insinuate that I may have run from my mate. He has always known I didn’t want a mate. Every time I had a human boyfriend, he would scold me, telling me I was wasting time. That one day my mate would come, and I would only hurt someone in the end. My mom only cautioned me not to give away my virginity as I should save that for my mate. I have thought of giving it to a human, maybe then my mate would have rejected me when he met me, but I saved it for when I meet the man I fall in love with one day.
“Oh, yea, that’s the guy who made everyone stay inside while he searched for his mate,” I told my dad.
I was glad I had learned this bit of information from my friends. I hoped it convinced my dad I was really there.
“Yes, it is. So you were there then when all that happened?” My dad looked me straight in the eye. But I was very much like my father, and I could hold his stare. I would not fail, not when it was this important.
“Obviously I was, and Melly went with them to search for her since his Beta is her mate. I had to drive her car back home for her. I didn’t mind though. I mean, most of my friends found their mates, and I felt like the odd one out.” I said to my father.
He seemed to have bought that I was actually there, and not the missing mate of the Big bad Alpha.
“I’m sorry Izzy, it’s just I know you haven’t really been fond of this whole mating thing, and well when I heard his ran from him well...” He began. I had to play this full scale if I wanted it to work.
“So you thought it was me. I may not have wanted to get matched together with someone I didn’t know, but I am sure when I saw him I wouldn’t be able to resist him. I mean, haven’t you guys always told me you can’t resist it. I have accepted that I may have no choice, and I may not like how superficial it all seems, but to suggest I have...” I said before he cut me off with a hug.
“I’m sorry. I just want the best for you. Truthfully, I would have been proud if you were his mate. You would have held a very high title. It would have meant the Moon Goddess thought you to be worthy of it. Not saying you are not, in fact, you are more than worthy,” he said proudly.
I knew what he meant. He always worried my ridiculing of mates would cause the Goddess to lose faith in me and curse my bloodline. Which made me wonder why she gave me an Alpha for a mate.

We had pulled up outside a small little brown house. We were visiting her friend. Hopefully, she could make me some more of the potion. I have never met an actual witch before. I was aware of them and knew of their powers. There are many kinds of witches. Some witches inherited it from their bloodlines, and some practiced it because they wanted to. I found many aspects of it interesting. We both celebrated Samain, for example. The Moon Goddess Selene created werewolves and witches, at least those born with the gene. I knew that much.
“You ready?” Melly asked me.
I nodded my head as we walked up to the door.
A woman that looked to be in her thirties answered. She had strawberry blonde hair; She looked us both up and down, then motioned us inside.
“Sabrina, your company is here.” She hollered.
I was a little nervous. I have heard many stories about witches, some being good, some being bad. But when she sat at the table and motioned for us to take a seat, her smile looked genuine. I looked around the house. It looked like any normal house. The smell of incense filled the air. My grandma always told me that incense is powerful. They could help you relax, or make you feel happier even. I decided these incense seemed relaxing.
“Lavender,” the lady said. I guess she could tell I was sniffing the surrounding air as I took in the aroma from the incense.
Just then a petite girl walked in. Her hair was short and framed her face in blonde locks. Her hazel eyes looked me up and down before she smiled. Though she looked familiar, I didn’t know her. She took a seat next to Melly.
“This is Izzy, my friend, I was telling you about,” Melly said to her.
“My name is Sabrina. This is my mother, Kathy.” The girl said I shook her hand, then her mothers.
As I shook her mother’s hand she gripped my hand, and her eyes closed. I was frightened as I tried to pull away. After about a minute, she opened her eyes and released my hand, “I’m sorry. Sometimes I see things. I cannot always choose when,” Her mother apologized.
What did she see? I was curious now.
“What do you mean you can see things?” I asked her.
“I come from a long line of druids. Some of us have the gift of sight. I sometimes get flashes or glimpses of things. My daughter told me what you need. Unfortunately, my daughter cannot make it for you, if you need to mask your scent for longer than a few hours. She has not advanced that far to make a stronger potion,” Kathy said to me.
I sighed in defeat; I didn’t know what I was going to do now.
“I would like to hear why you want to mask your scent. Perhaps I may do it for you, as long as I think it is for a good reason.” She added, immediately lifting my spirits. There may be some hope. The thing was Is I was unsure if she knew what I was.
“Well, I guess I am not sure what you know about me,” I started.
“I know you are a werewolf and I know all about them and their laws.” She crossed her arms in front of her chest and leaned back in the chair.
“Well, I want to mask my scent because I don’t feel they should force me to love someone. I mean, it just seems fake. How can you just immediately fall in love with someone you don’t know? I want to fall in love with whoever I choose to. My mate is an Alpha, and he is looking for me. He has been visiting packs all over the State trying to find me. I know mates are real, but shouldn’t the man I spend my life with be someone I choose?” I said to her, hoping she understood.
She was my only hope. If she didn't help me I was either stuck mating with this Alpha or running away.
“You know, years ago I once fell in love with a werewolf. He was twenty-four and hadn’t found his mate. He was sure she had been dead. I guess it’s unusual to not have yours by that age. We ended up getting engaged when he was twenty-five, and I was twenty,” she closed her eyes briefly as if remembering that moment.
“Sabrina took after you, I take it?” I looked at Sabrina now looking for any signs she was actually a werewolf but found none. Not that I expected to. If she was, they would register her with the pack. Sometimes in human matings, the child didn’t get the expressed gene. I imagine it was the same here.
“The night before our wedding, he came to me and told me the words that broke my heart. He had found his true mate and would not marry me. He said he was sorry, but he no longer was in love with me after he met her. I couldn’t understand how he could fall out of law in one day. I begged the Goddess to bring him back. She always has her reasons though, I guess. So I can understand what you want. I will do it. But It will not be a potion. I have something much better in mind.” Her voice sounded far off and sad, and I could see slight dampness at the corner of her right eye.
“Mom, you met dad after that and got your chance at love,” Sabrina said. Well, I guess that solved that.
“Yes I did, and the love I have for him and you are all I needed. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.” Kathy reached over and touched Sabrina's arm affectionately. I could tell they’re close.
“I will need a few hours to have it ready,” She got up from the table and went down her hallway. We went to get some pizza while we waited. I was excited to see what she would make. A part of me felt sad for Kathy, she seemed sad she lost the man she was going to marry so long ago. I decided to not date any werewolves unless he knew for a fact his mate was dead. I didn’t want what happened to her to happen to me.
A few hours later we were back at Sabrina’s her mother was waiting in the kitchen. She had a small pouch in her hand.
“This will last as long as you have it on. You may wear it in the shower.” She said handing me a necklace. It was gold and had an oval-shaped locket hanging from it. I wondered if the potion was inside or what. The design on the locket was Keltic.
“Thank you. I really appreciate this. It is a beautiful necklace,” I reached behind my neck and snapped the clasp into place. “You said earlier you saw something when you shook my hand, what was it?” I asked her.
“Well, you wanted to fall in love and I can tell you that you will get your wish,” She said to me
I was happy that this would work and that one day I would fall in love and find my own happiness. I just needed to get rid of an Alpha first. I reached into my purse and pulled out my wallet to offer her some money, but she shook her head no, “Come visit me sometime and tell me about pack life instead,”
“I’ll come this weekend,” I told her.
My phone buzzed, signaling an incoming text message. It was my mother.
Alpha Stevens is calling a Pack Meeting
I’m prepared though. I knew that he was going to announce the arrival of Alpha Derek. I'm ready though. I would make sure he went home empty-handed in no time. He wouldn’t find his mate here, that’s for sure.
