I knew I was wrong for just leaving without telling her. I needed to make sure this meeting with the Council went as planned. I was the Head Alpha, but I still had to bring my decision before them. I knew I needed to find my mate, and I would be lying if I didn’t think the mate pull would affect my plans. I have met no one capable of denying their mate for another woman, but that is precisely what I wanted to do.
I just needed to talk to her, make her understand. Hell, I know I didn’t convince her earlier. I told her I like her but need to find my mate. She probably thinks she meant nothing to me. I may not be good with words, but maybe I could help her understand what I want and feel if I could just get her to talk to me. I sent out another text to her. I hoped when she turned on her phone, she would at least see them and reply. I then called Brad. Maybe he could tell me where she was and what she was thinking. I also wanted to have a word with Max.
“Yes, Alpha?” He answered.
“Where is she?” I asked as calmly as I could.
“She went home. She’s distraught Alpha,” Brad said.
“Tell me everything. I want to know how you let this get out of hand,” I demanded.
“It worried her after you canceled class, and of course, Max overheard your plans and kept trying to tell her. I stopped him. But then she sort of demanded to know,” Brad said.
“She can’t demand you, don’t make excuses,” I yelled.
“She sure gets you to do what she asks, but it was Max who told her,” Brad said.
He was right; somehow, she had a way to calm me and even make me stop what I was doing if she asked. I couldn’t believe the power she had in her sweet little voice. I sighed.
“So what did Max tell her damn, get to the point,” I said.
“He told her you left to find your mate, and that you told me if you did not return by the end of the week, I was to return to our pack,” Brad said.
“Where is Max now?” I asked.
“He is in the tv room,” Brad said.
“Monitor him. I want updates if he so much as lays a hand on her,” I told him. The line went silent, and I worried I lost connection, but he spoke a moment later.
“Alpha Derek, you are unfair to her, I will monitor her, but you will need to make clear to her what you want. You can’t just have it both ways. I imagine you will lose her, so make sure you know what you want and soon. I won’t play any part in hurting her. I have to go, but you think of that,” Brad said, hanging up the phone.
He just hung up on me, and I detected something I never have in his voice, defiance. I didn’t know if it was because his mate was her best friend, or he was protecting Isabella. I would guess a little of both. He has never defied my orders for anything. He made no mention of monitoring Max, and that bothered me, but I didn’t have time to call him back right now the Council would be here soon.
“Alpha, The Council, is here and ready to convene at your convenience,” Chad bowed.
“Thank you, I will be there momentarily,” I dismissed him. It was time to make my intentions clear.
As I entered my meeting room, the Men and woman around me all stood. It was standard that as the Head Alpha, they would stand until I took my seat. Sometimes I just felt it was overdramatic, but traditions were traditions. Many of these people were good friends of mine. I took my seat at the head of the table and nodded my hand, signaling everyone they may sit.
“Thank you all for coming on such short notice. I hope you all found your travel arrangements to your liking,” I began as everyone around me nodded.
“I’m faced with a situation that perhaps some of you who have been around for a while have seen before. As you all know, I sensed my mate at the Annual Samhan Dance, and I’ve been searching for her. Well, the better word would be I was. I met someone during my search, and I want to make her my mate and Head Alpha Female. I shared with many of you the vision that led me to the Cypress Pack to find my mate. I can assure you, my mate, is not there, but the one I wish to make my mate is,” I said.
“It is your choice as Head of this Council and Alpha to take your own mate, but she must have a good bloodline as she would need to lead all our people with you,” Alpha Brian said.
“Her father is the Beta of Cypress Pack, and I know that alone does not qualify her, but I assure you she has an Alpha Command,” I said.
“Please explain further,” Brian said.
“I started doing training in her pack a few days after arriving, and she challenged me in a fight. She has also used her tone on me a few times, and my wolf and I accepted her command as our equal. My Beta, Brad has defied my order to protect her feelings,” I shared.
“That is Alpha Stevens pack, am I right?” Max’s Grandfather, Elijah, asked.
“Yes it is, and your Grandson has caused me much grief,” I said.
“Can she command her own Alpha? What does my Grandson have to do with all this?” Alpha Elijah asked me.
“I don’t know if she can command her own Alpha, it seems she only acts that way towards me, and I’m not there to understand my Betas protection of her, as this all happened over the phone. As for your Grandson, well, we all know he is going to get another mate. He has taken a liking to her, and I ordered him to stay away from her. Instead of obeying my command, he told her I was searching for my mate and not returning. He also snatched the phone from her and challenged my command. I do not take lightly to that, and I am warning if he does not learn his place, Max may never take over your pack,” I said.
“May we put Alpha Stevens on a conference call? I’m curious to see what he says. He knows her better than us. Then we may speak on the matter of Maxwell,” Brian said.
I nodded my head and picked up the phone and dialed Alpha Stevens.
“I’m here with the Council, and we need to do a conference call. You may have your Beta present, as he should hear this, but no one else,” I told him. Once we agreed, I hit the speaker button and began.
“We are here in front of the Council discussing the matter of Isabella. I have brought my intentions to ask her to be my mate to the Council, but they have some questions,” I told Alpha Stevens.
“Are you aware she has an Alpha Command and have you seen her use it?” Alpha, Brian asked.
“Yes. I have seen her use it on Alpha Derek. She had made plans to show a new member around, Maxwell, I believe that is Alpha Elijah’s Grandson, and Alpha Derek wanted her to do a training plan with him. He forbade her to go. She told him he could not boss her around, and an argument ensued,” Alpha Stevens said.
“So she cannot defy your command then, is it only limited to Alpha Derek’s,” Brian asked.
“I didn’t command her, she ended up leaving with Max, in fact, she intervened when Alpha Derek was ready to rip my head off,” Alpha Stevens said.
“What was he going to rip your head off for?” Brian chuckled.
“I had reminded him he had planned to visit another pack to find his mate, hoping would diffuse the situation. His Beta tried to cool him down, but it was Isabella who ended up softening him. He let her go. She is not the type to go around openly defying commands, though she has defied her father, which could be just a father-daughter thing,” Alpha Stevens said.
“She may be able to calm or challenge you because you and your wolf have accepted her as your mate,” Alpha Brian told me.
“No, she did it before we accepted her as well, the day she challenged me to a fight in training,” I said.
“Why did she challenge you to a fight?” Alpha Brian asked me.
“I got upset with her. She was partners with Max, and during training, she landed on top of him. I said something to her, and she challenged me,” I said. I didn’t want to tell them I was raging mad, ready to kill seeing her on top of Max, even if it was in training.
“Well, she still lives, so did you submit?” Brian chuckled.
“I made her my training partner. I believe we both ended the fight. I told her to never challenge me again, but I did not want to hurt her. I found I couldn’t even though she challenged me in front of everyone,” I said.
“What of your mate? You would be one of the first to actually defy the mate bond if you pull it off. Interesting enough is Alpha Stevens tried to years ago,” Alpha Brian said.
“What do you mean he tried to?” I asked.
“You did not tell him, Alpha Stevens? I’m surprised,” Alpha, Elijah said.
“No, I didn’t want my story to discourage him,” Alpha Stevens said.
“Well, he had met this woman, I believe a Witch, and since he had not found his mate, he got engaged to her. He was approaching the mating deadline, and right before his wedding, his mate showed up. He tried to resist her. He loved another woman, and well, the mating pull got to him in the end. He broke the poor woman’s heart and called off his engagement the night before the wedding. He is the first to come close to defying it. No one ever has,” Elijah explained.
I was aware no one had, but not aware Alpha Stevens tried. It is what worried me. It is the reason I wanted to openly dissolve the bond, which meant I had to find my mate first.
“You will have to complete your ceremony in public, and since you are Head Alpha, all in your State and many in others will be in attendance, so if your mate is in that State, as we are sure she is, she will be at that ceremony. It could devastate both you and Isabella,” Brian said.
“I have not looked for her in some time, but my plan is to find her and dissolve the bond and then ask Isabella to accept me. I admit things have gotten complicated, and I may have no choice but to return and explain to Isabella as she angry with me no thanks to your Grandson, and I will not lose her,” I said.
“Alpha Stevens, what is your take on this. I mean, what of Isabella’s mate?” Brian asked.
“Well, we have already figured out her mate has to be an Alpha and a powerful one. With that being said, I’m sure he is on the Council. Every Alpha has a mate in our State, and the one unmated Alpha is not her mate. They have met frequently, and so I’m sure it is not him. That leaves only Max and my son. I am sure it is not my son, as they would have known by now, and Max is very interested in her. I admit I thought he may be at first. We don’t know when the Goddess will activate a new bond for him, but I no longer believe so,” Alpha Stevens said.
“Hmm, that is interesting. So let me ask you something, do you know who her true mate is, and why she has an Alpha Command? You seem sure it is not Max, and that would leave only one unmated Council Member, Derek. This makes no sense,” Alpha Brian asked.
There was silence on the line. Did he know this entire time who her mate was? Was he hesitating because her father was in the room? I knew he must be uncomfortable answering with him there.
“Wait, I would like your Beta to step out, please. I don’t wish any answer you have coming back on her,” I said.
“That is my daughter, and I have every right to be here, no disrespect Alpha Derek. When you came to me and told me your intentions, I agreed only because I’m aware my daughter has always wanted to find love independently, and I knew that you would take care of her. I also admired you would defy your mate for her, but I refuse to go away like a child. I ask to stay, or at least let my Alpha chose for me,” Isabella’s father said.
“It doesn’t matter, in the end, he will know anyway. He may stay if it is okay with you, Alpha Derek,” Alpha Stevens said.
“Very well, please proceed,” I said.
“I do know who her true mate is, I think. But I cannot reveal that,” Alpha Stevens said.
“You will tell me now,” I demanded. The only other one that made sense is Maxwell, and I had to know. If it was true, his Grandfather would tell him.
“I’m sorry, not even your command can make me, and I’m bound by the Omerta,” He said. The room fell in silence. No one has used the Omerta as long as I have lived, that I have heard of.
“You know who my daughter’s mate is? Did he bind you by the Omerta? Why wouldn’t you tell me?” Isabella’s father is mad with his Alpha.
“Silence!” I yelled.
“I am most curious now, but not even I can override an Omerta Code. I am surprised you agreed to keep it silent; you did not have to accept the Code. It is always your choice,” I told Alpha Stevens.
“I agreed to it. Izzy always wanted to find love on her own, anyway. There should be no interference from a mate if she accepts you. That is all I can say,” Alpha Stevens said.
“I think it is best Izzy know that you at least know she has a mate out there. Does the Omerta forbid you from that?” I asked him.
“It forbids me of saying who it is, and the reasons no one is to know. I can surely tell her I know who her mate is, but that is all,” He replied.
“Very well, I wish you to tell her as soon as possible. I want her to have a choice. I will get back as soon as I can. Does anyone else here have questions for them?” I asked the Council.
“No, but I would like to say I will visit your pack. I would like to see for myself if she can command me. I think that will answer some questions I have. It will also allow me to see my Grandson,” Elijah said.
“Very well, I will prepare for your arrival. How many will you bring with you?” Alpha Stevens asked.
“Just myself and my wife,” Elijah said.
“Tomorrow, we will have Max’s initiation into our pack. Perhaps you will make it in time,” Alpha Stevens said.
After we hung up the line, I decided now to address Max with his Grandfather.
“Does all accept that she can be my Alpha Female?” I asked, not really caring what they said. I made up my mind. Everyone nodded their heads but Elijah.
“I wish to confirm for myself something. If she can command me, there is no way Max is her mate. I think her ability over you may be more to the fact that you are interested in her. We will see, though,” Elijah said.
“I think we all agree she is worthy and capable from what we know to lead our kind. I do, however, wish you luck if your true mate should appear. I would hope you can indeed resist the pull. We will see,” Alpha Brian said.
“I am confident, and I know what I feel and what I’m going to do. I wish to discuss Max with you, Elijah,” I said.
“We will discuss it alone at The Cypress pack if that is okay with you,” He said.
I nodded my head. I would kill two birds with one stone.
The Council ended, and I decided it was time to book my next flight. I needed to be there in time to make sure this all worked. I took out my phone and looked at the picture we took together. It made me smile, and soon I know I would see her again. Hopefully, she understands why I kept it from her. No matter, I will not let Max take her from me. I didn’t realize who else could be her mate; it just made little sense why he wouldn’t tell her, why she wouldn’t feel the mate pull if he was.
