“Why would you say something? You do not understand what you are even talking about.” Brad gritted out.
“Dude, stop lying, I heard every f*****g word. He acted like an ass getting all jealous when she talked to me, but after he takes her out on a date, he leaves without even telling her. Not to mention he threatened me yesterday to stay away from her,” Max shouted.
I couldn’t take it anymore. I just needed to getaway. I got up and took off to the parking lot; I didn’t care if I got detention for leaving. There was no way I could stay here another minute.
“Izzy, wait up,” Brad shouted at me.
“I’m not sure what you have to say, I honestly just…” I started.
“Izzy, please just come back. I think you should tell them.” Brad whispered. I looked him in the eyes, and could see he was really hurting, he knew I was really Derek’s mate and, therefore, his Alpha Female, and it hurt him that I’m hurt. His job was to protect me.
“Fine, but I want to know everything,” I said. He nodded his head, and we walked back over to the group.
“Guys, I have something to tell you all,” I said, but the bell rang.
“How about you come to the packhouse after school, and we can talk there,” Kyle said.
I nodded my head and headed to class. I decided to try to get through the day. If I went home now, I would only go even crazier. At least I had the teacher’s voices droning on and on to keep my mind busy and off Derek.
Once school lets out, I’m relieved. I grabbed my back and headed straight to my car. I didn’t really have any homework today, so I didn’t need any books. Melly caught up to me.
“I’m just going to ride with you if that’s ok?” She asked.
“I think I’m just going to go home, but I can drop you off,” I said, opening my car door.
“Stop trying to hide. You need to tell Max, at least. He won’t let this go, and he will end up getting hurt,” Melly said.
I knew I should tell Max, but I told Max I would pursue nothing with him. I caved in and went to the packhouse. I guess my father would be happy I was visiting, anyway.
“I will go, but Max knows I am not interested in dating him,” I said.
“You told him it was because he would find his mate, and so he sees you went on a date with Derek, who he thinks will find his mate too. Not to mention some people think Max will turn out to be your mate, once the Goddess gives him one again.” She said.
We drove on in silence, and I was a bucket of nerves by the time we pulled into the packhouse. I knew a few of my friends already knew the truth, but telling the others made me nervous.
“I see you made sure she came,” Brad laughed.
“I am persuasive,” Melly said.
“That you are, baby,” Brad said, pulling her to him and I rolled my eyes,
We used the downstairs room; It was soundproof, and we could hear if someone opened the door. They mostly used it for small meetings. I mind linked our Alpha and told him we were going to use it. He didn’t care.
I pulled Max to the side, deciding that he should be the first to know. Even though I knew the others longer, I just felt it was right. Melly kept the others busy upstairs a few minutes getting drinks and sandwiches. Only Brad and Kyle remained downstairs.
“Look, Max, I am really sorry, I should have told you, but I just didn’t want anyone to know, but Derek is my mate,” I said.
“How is that even possible, you don’t have to lie, Izzy,” He said.
“It’s a long story, but a witch helped me, and let’s just say he does not feel the mate pull. He doesn’t get all the tingly feelings and doesn’t know my scent, it masks it from him,” I said.
“You are serious, aren’t you?” He asked me.
“Yes, I have my reasons, which I will explain once to everyone, but I thought you should know that is why I could be nothing with you but friends,” I said.
As soon as the others came, I repeated what I told Max.
“Guys, I just really wanted a man to love me for me, not because of the bond,” I explained.
“I’m confused here. So Alpha Derek is out looking for his mate, but you are his mate. You’re mad he left to look for his mate and didn’t tell you,” Tyler said.
“No, I mean look, last night we went on a date, things happened and...” I started
“What do you mean, things happened?” Max yelled.
“Calm down, not those things. I meant we had a great time, and well, he told me he wanted to make me his. Wait, that’s not right, I mean, he had to stop kissing me because he wanted to make me his, but then he told me he needed time to figure out what he wanted. I was going to tell him, but I just want him to be with me because of me, not because in the end, he finds out I’m his mate,” I said.
“So, what is it you want from him?” Brad asked me.
“Maybe I’m unfair, but how do you think I feel that we had an awesome date, followed by the text message he sent telling me he missed me, then today I find out he has left to find someone else and plans that if he finds her, he isn’t coming back. I’m sorry if it’s hard for any of you to understand, but that right there shows he wants to be with his mate when he finds her I get that I’m his mate, so that will be me, but do I really want it knowing he didn’t choose me when he could have. All I wanted was for him to want me for me, not because I’m his mate. He has decided he wants his mate that hurts me,” I said.
“I understand what you mean, my mate is human, and I have to make her fall in love with me so I can relate to you. I may lose her if she can’t deal with what I am and love me for me,” Malik said.
“It’s not what you think,” Brad said.
“Is it not? I mean, he didn’t even have the decency to tell me what he was going to do,” I yelled.
“You had no intention of even being with him; you would never tell him before. If I recall your exact words, they were like you just wanted him to leave so you could find love on your own,” Kyle added.
“You’re right, but I gave him a chance the night he came to apologize and asked me on a date,” I said.
“So wait, you were willing to give up your mate, to find true love?” Max asked me.
“Yes. But I really am having feelings for Derek now,” I said. Max’s face fell, and I felt terrible, but it was the truth.
“So, what are you going to do?” Melly asked.
My phone started ringing before I could answer them. I looked at the caller id and knew it was Derek. I just let it go right to voice mail. Apart of me wanted to answer, but the other didn’t. I needed to distance myself. I would not compromise love for anything. The phone rang again, signaling he was calling again. I sighed and picked it up.
“Hello,” I answered.
“Hey, I’m sorry I had to go out of town for business, I didn’t have time to let you know, and you were in school,” He said to me. There it was a lie. He left and chose not to tell me. I know I was not being exactly honest but still. I was silent; I didn’t even know how to answer that.
“Are you there? You are quiet, is something wrong?” He asked me.
“I’m here, I just, so you had pack business to take care of, that sucks. When do you plan to come back?” I asked, wondering what he would say. I was giving him an out and a chance to tell me the truth. I knew I was holding my breath, waiting for his reply.
“Yes, I don’t know when I will be back, though. I just don’t know how long it is going to take. And all that,” He said.
The tears rolled down my cheeks, and I knew I couldn’t help it. Before I could say anything, Max snatches the phone out of my hand.
“Who the f**k do you think you are, and you just told her that you miss her!! Did you tell her that you don’t plan to come back if you find your mate? Stop playing games with her. She deserves someone that will love her and only want her clearly that is not you!” Max yelled into the phone. He then hung it up.
My phone began immediately blaring. I had no control. My phone was in Max’s hands. When he answered, I could hear Derek’s voice through the phone. He’s pissed.
“I told you to stay away from her. What the f**k are you doing with her right now?” He demanded through the phone. Max pulled the phone away, and I could tell he had a hard time fighting the demand even through the phone. I tried to reach for the phone, but he only moved away from me.
“You think you can decide who she talks to when you left her here to look for someone else? What is she, some kind of backup plan for you? Just stay wherever you are. That will be better for her and everyone in the long run; you will end up alone anyway,” Max spat at him, then handed me the phone.
I stared at it as if it was the plague. I could hear Derek’s voice, and he was furious. I could barely control myself now; I could not speak to him. Brad grabbed the phone and listened for a moment.
“Alpha, I’m here with her now,” Brad said. I could hear Derek yelling more, but Brad remained calm.
“She is here at the Pack House. I’m not sure how you expect him not to run into her. We are all here hanging out,” Brad said, followed by more yelling from Derek, I was sure.
“Look, you should have told her, she’s pretty upset right now,” Brad said. I reached my hand out for my phone; It was time I got a straight answer from him. Brad told him to hold on a moment, then handed me the phone. I took a deep breath, knowing what was to come.
“Derek, this isn’t exactly the kind of thing I wanted to discuss over the phone, but..”
I started; it was time to tell him everything.
“Isabella, just listen, please. I’m sorry, I didn’t tell you. To be honest, it scared me too. I won’t deny I like you, but I have to do this. I have to find my mate,” He said.
My heart broke into a million pieces. He liked me, but that was it, not enough to resist a bond that I took away with magic. I knew he wasn’t feeling a pull. It was ridiculous. I also knew no matter what I feel for him; I would not tell him I was his mate, not when he just said he needed that bond and needed his mate. He had to leave to go look for it. Too bad it was right here, and I knew what I would do. I just needed to do it face to face, for it to work. He would be free then.
“I understand, Alpha Derek, I guess it was stupid of me to wish and hope that you could ever choose to love me over a mate bond,” With that, I hung up and turned off my phone.
I’m done talking. There was really nothing else to say, I would make sure I told him I was his mate and he could stop looking, but I would do that face to face, then I would make sure he was free. I could not be with him knowing he didn’t want me and chose a mate bond that wasn’t even affecting him right now.
Brad’s head jerked back, and I knew Derek was in his head through the mind link.
“Just tell him I went home. He will leave you alone then,” I said.
“He will be back, and he will not stop calling your phone. It would be best if you gave him a chance to talk,” Brad said.
“I will when he gets back, I plan to tell him the truth, anyway. I need just to go home and be alone,” I said.
“Don’t forget we have the initiation party this weekend for the newest members,” Kyle said. I almost forgot about that.
I nodded my head and gave everyone hugs and left.
When I got home, I turned my phone back on. I know I was weak and really just wanted to see if he left me a voice mail. I was a sucker and got hooked in my own game. I powered on my phone and sat on my bed. After a few seconds, I could see I had new text messages. I decided to read them first.
Max; Hey, I just wanted to check and see if you made it home, ok.
I sent a reply telling him I did, and I was going to bed. The next four were all from Derek.
Why did you hang up? Call me back.
You never even let me talk. Stay away from Max.
I told you I needed time, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you I was looking for her again.
Guess you’re really upset, just at least tell me you’re ok. The last one said.
I sent a simple reply that said, I’m fine. I will not do this over text message or the phone. Goodnight, Derek,
I then laid down and tried to go to sleep. I just didn’t want to think about it anymore.
Alpha Derek POV Sneak Peek.
It pissed me off. How dare he talk to me like that? I warned him to stay away from her, but he doesn’t know how to listen. I needed to diffuse the situation. I upset Isabella, and I would not lose her, not when I came this far.
“You were not supposed to say anything to her!” I shouted through the link at Brad.
“Max told her, Alpha. I am afraid if you don’t come soon, you will lose her. She knows you ordered me home and thinks you are not returning if you find your mate,” Brad replied back.
I slammed my hand into the wall. That Mutt was really getting in my way now. He had no right to tell her that, and if he cost me her, he would pay.
“Alpha, is everything ok in here?” My enforcer Chad asked, as he ran into my office.
“I’m fine. I want no disturbances until the rest of the Council is here,” I said.
He bowed his head and shut the door. I needed to think. I had to somehow get her to talk to me. I took out my phone and sent her a message. After a few minutes, she didn’t reply. I dialed her number, but it went straight to voicemail. She must have turned it off. I sent out another message. I couldn’t leave a voicemail, not when I was this upset.
