I'm Drowning He's Swimming

2285 Words
We sat through the rest of dinner in silence, both of us in thought. It wasn’t an awkward silence, just a comfortable one. Once dinner was over, we cleaned up. Then he pulled me over to the edge of the deck. It was then I realized we were out on the water. I could barely even see where the docks were anymore. It was beautiful. The sun was setting, and from the water, it was like nothing I had ever seen before. I took a picture of it. Derek jerked my phone from me, laughing. “Let’s take one of us together,” He said. We squeezed in together, and he wrapped his arms around me. My phone had a camera on both sides to easily see what the picture would look like. I guess no matter what happened; I would always have this memory and that picture. Derek took out his, and we took one with him as well, but he stepped off and took one of just me in it. “Now I have something to look at later when you’re gone,” He smiled. We stood there a while and just talked about everything. He told me about his pack and his parents. We talked about what we liked to do for fun; it surprised me he loved to read like me. I didn’t take him as the reading kind. We actually had a lot in common. “Isabella, would you dance with me?” He suddenly asked me. “There is no music,” I laughed. He flipped through his I- phone and chose a song. It was Rhianna’s Stay. I loved this song. He grabbed me by the hand and pulled me to him, making me tingle at his touch. “Do you remember our first dance?” He whispered in my ear. How could I forget? I was so nervous. I couldn’t even remember what song we danced to. I regretted it now; I wish I knew what our first dance was. “Yes, I do,” I replied. “It was to this song,” He said, making my heart skip a beat. I couldn’t believe he remembered.  He's an incredible dancer, and I couldn’t help but feel this was the perfect dance ever.  I was doing so great at keeping myself together, even though his closeness made me weak in the knees until I heard him whisper in my ear, “Not really sure how to feel about it. Something in the way you move,” as he sang the song, my heart raced at the sound of his sexy voice, “Makes me feel like I can’t live without you,” As he spun me around, I could feel my heartbeat. Damn, his voice was sexy when he sang. I was falling and fast. I just hoped in the end; he would catch me and not let me fall. When the song ended, he tilted my face up slightly, so that I was looking in his eyes, “You are so beautiful Isabella, I don’t know what is going on with us, but I just can’t let you go, not right now,” He said.  I needed to pull back. I’m dying to kiss him, but before I could, his lips met mine. They were soft, and at first, he just lingered on my lips, then he slowly took his tongue and circled my lips, making me moan. I pulled him closer to me, wrapping my arms around him as his tongue teased me; he pulled back and began kissing me down my neck. My entire body was on fire with his touch. He laid me down on the deck gently and wrapped his arms around me, making me face him, my legs entwined with his, and his lips crashed to mine, as he bit down on my lip gently. I heard him moan, as his tongue found mine, he deepened the kiss. Suddenly he pulled back. I caught my breath. “Isabella, I’m sorry,” He said as he sat down. I couldn’t even speak. I just sat there. “If we didn’t stop, I'm going to make you mine, and that’s not fair,” He said. “What did you mean?” I asked him, confused by who it was unfair to. “Isabella, do you know how crazy you make me? I think about you all the time, and it is not fair to take you without making sure it is what we both want,” He said. “I see,” I whispered. I guess he was still undecided. I didn’t blame him. I also didn’t expect him to fall madly in love with me after one date. I wasn’t expecting him to claim me as his, nor did I exactly want him to right now, but his words hurt me. He scooted in front of me and pulled me to him. “What would you do right now if your mate showed up?” He asked me. “There’s no one that could show up and make me feel what you just did,” I answered him. It was the truth. No one would show up as my mate because my mate was sitting right here with me. “What about Max? I just don’t understand it. I know your mate is a Powerful Alpha. There is no other explanation for how you can even challenge me,” He said. “Max is not my mate. I’m not interested in him that way,” I said. “You may end up his mate, every Council member has a mate, he will take the Council if he decides to once he graduates, then what?” He asked me. “You’re the one running around the whole State looking for your mate. I am telling you I know for a fact Max isn’t my mate,” I said. “I haven’t even looked since I met you, I swear. I know I should be, but I just needed to see what was here between us first,” Derek said.  I stood up and leaned over the deck. I could tell we were heading back to the docks. I was glad I just needed to get away and think. I wanted to tell Derek the truth, but a part of me needed to see if he could love me and choose me. “I just need some time to figure this out,” He said. That was when I made my decision. I would not tell him not yet. He came up behind me and wrapped his arms around me, sending chills down my arms. “Take all the time you need. I didn’t expect you to fall in love with me after one date magically. I’m not stupid. I told you I don’t believe in all that superficial stuff, anyway,” I said. Truthfully, I knew I was falling in love with him. The mating bond affected me, and though I tried to fight it, it made every time we spent together and every little touch and kiss that much harder. I’m drowning, and he’s swimming. “I had a wonderful night, and I hope I didn’t upset you,” Derek said as he dropped me off at home a few hours later. “No, thank you. I had a great time, too,” I said. He gently kissed my lips. I pulled away and ended it before I lost all control.  I walked inside, hoping my parents were in bed. It was almost eleven p.m., and I just wanted to go to my room. All the lights were out, and I was happy. I made my way through the dark, not wanting to wake them. Once I got to my room, I got ready for bed. I needed to do my math homework due tomorrow, so I took my math book out and sat it at the desk. I couldn’t wait. Soon I would be graduating. It only reminded me of Prom and that I didn’t have a date yet. A few people asked me, but I was still dateless. I got to work on my math when I heard my cell phone go off. I took it out of my purse. It was a text message from a number I did not recognize. I had a great time, and miss you already. It said. I sighed. It was from Derek. I saved the number in my phone and sent him a reply. Thanks. I had a great time too. It was perfect. How did you get my number, anyway? I replied to him. I have my ways, sweet dreams, Isabella, He texted back. I was glad he messaged me, but I needed to concentrate on my math homework. I threw my phone back on the bed and went back to the math in front of me. The next day I woke up and realized I had slept in. I wasn’t late or anything, but I woke up twenty minutes later than usual. I took a quick shower and blow-dried my hair while straightening it with my brush. It would have to do for today. I quickly applied a little lip gloss and mascara and got my stuff, and went downstairs. Halfway there, I remembered what happened last night and slowed down, knowing my parents would ask questions. I guess I couldn’t avoid them forever. “Good morning Izzy,” my father said. “I made you a breakfast sandwich,” My mother smiled. “Good morning, and thanks,” I said. So this was odd. They didn’t even mention last night. I hoped it was a good sign. “I picked up some more Orange Juice for you,” My mother walked towards the refrigerator. “I woke up late today, so maybe I will have some later,” I said. I gave them both a kiss on the cheek and walked towards the door. “Have a good day, dear,” My mother said. I went out and got in my car, wondering how I avoided the whole talk. I would not complain, that’s for sure. The first half of the day went by pretty quickly, and just before lunch; there was an announcement over the loudspeaker. The fifth-period Training class is canceled for today. Seniors who are taking the course may convene on the field and enjoy a free period. You may not leave the school property. Thank you. The bell rang, and everyone scurried to get to lunch. I wonder why he canceled the class, now I wouldn’t get to see him today. Oh well, it would give me a chance to hang out with the girls if I could get them away from their mates long enough. Maybe someone would know what happened. I was sure it was pack business or something. I got my lunch, thankful the line wasn’t too long, and made my way to the table. Kyle, Renee, Max, Tyler, and Mandy all sat at the table. “Dude, you so couldn’t stick the straw in your nose,” Tyler was saying. The Guys were so immature. “Hey, Izzy, did you hear we get a free period?” Brian said, coming up and sitting down. “Yep, I’m glad. It gives me a chance to hang out with everybody,” I said. “I didn’t think you would be too happy,” Max said. Brad and Melly walked up, and immediately Brad shot Max a look. What in the world was going on? “What do you mean?” I asked Max. “Just let it be. It is not the place,” Brad said lowly. I guess he was referring to the humans at our table. So I let it go. Rachel came up and bumped Brian, making him scoot over so she could sit by me. “Hey, you can’t always sit by her. She is my friend too,” Brian said. “Seriously, go find one of your tramps.” Rachel shot back. “Come on, Rach, not everyone is the settling down type,” I said. “He just hasn’t found the one yet,” Tyler said, placing his hands around Mandy. “Where’s Malik?” I asked. “He and the new girl are eating lunch out today. They had permission before they canceled class,” Kyle said. “At least we don’t have to sit in a study hall, we can sit outside,” Brian said. Just then, a petite little brunette walked up and put her hands over Brian’s eyes. “Guess who?” She teased. I hope he could recognize her voice because she was not the same girl he was with last week. “Just who I was waiting on,” He said, saving himself from giving a name. He turned around and grinned at her. “Well, it’s been fun, but I think I’m going to take off now,” He said, getting up from the table. Once he left, we all laughed. After lunch, we were sitting outside under the Oak Tree. The only human here was Rachel, and she knew about all of us. Charlotte had a doctor’s appointment today, so she was absent. I was hoping someone was going to tell me why they canceled class. I’m worried. I hope something didn’t happen to Derek. The way Max sounded earlier when he said someone should tell me didn’t sound right. “So, is anyone going to tell me what’s going on?” I asked. Brad looked straight at Max, and I knew it was a look telling him to shut up. “You can’t order him, Brad, don’t even try it,” I said. “You should know, you went on a date last night with him, and today he’s gone,” Max said. “What do you mean he’s gone?” I could feel my breathing pick up. “He went to find his mate; I’m going to kick his ass if he ever comes back. But that’s not all. If he doesn’t return by the end of the week, Brad here is to return to their pack,” Max glared daggers at Brad. I couldn’t believe it. My stomach just turned upside down. He was planning on staying behind if he found her. I knew he wouldn’t find her, but to know he planned just not to come back really hurt. I was so happy after he texted me last night. Those little words he said, he told me he already missed me, but yet he left. I know I’m lying to him, well technically I’m keeping a secret, but I didn’t expect this.
