[Kat's P.O.V]
My breakthrough with Elias made me feel more confident. But I was worried about the talk I was going to have to have with Mia. I didn't even know if she wanted a mate. But, instead, she seemed fixated on Elias just as much as he was on her.
It wasn't hard to find her. She was in the kitchen, bouncing Emerson in her lap. She looks over at me as I walk in, her dark eyes unwelcoming. "I just wanna talk," I say, trying not to send a glare of my own.
"I don't want to talk to you." She says, her jaw setting. Emerson coos, drawing both of our attention to the bundle. Emerson was small; she had the same startling shade of green eyes as Elias, but the similarities stopped. Instead, she looked just like Mia.
"She looks just like you," I say, trying to offer a smile. Kit tried everything in her power to challenge this wolf that had such a hold on my mate.
She offers nothing to say, and I take this as a chance to pull up a seat next to her. "How did you meet Elias?" I asked c*****g my head to the side, grasping anything I could to get her to talk or look in my direction.
"I grew up with Elias. My parents died when I was younger, and his parents practically raised me as their own." She finally looks at me, and I nod for her to keep going.
"We didn't plan to, mate. It just happened. I've been thinking a lot since you got here about how I would feel if I had a mate and he had reproduced with someone else. I know it seems crazy, but I do care for Elias. We have something that I can't explain." She blurts out. "I've felt guilty about this, but I can't give up, Elias. I just can't."
Unexplained sadness crashes through me in waves, and I know what's holding them together. They both shared the deep trauma of losing their parents. "I'm sorry how I acted when you first arrived. That's not me at all. I was so scared of losing Elias; here you were, this strong female wolf. " She says, fidgeting with Emerson's hand, doing everything she can to not look at me.
I expected this conversation to turn out differently. "I'm sorry too. It's hard to come to terms with my mate being with another wolf." I say, scratching the back of my neck nervously.
"Not to say much, but I don't see you losing Elias soon. He hasn't been the kindest since I arrived," I mutter, wondering why on earth I had just told her this. I expected her to get smug and say she was the better-suited wolf. She didn't do any of this. She just sat there.
"Elias is tough. He's hard to get a read on when you don't know him. He was standoffish to me when his parents took me in. Always complaining that I was horrible, that he wanted to send me back to the woods." She seemed lost in thought, a small smile appearing on her face. "I didn't know how he felt about me until we both hit 17 when our wolves began to stir. That was the summer he told me he loved me."
Pain courses through my chest as she says this. She must see the look on my face because she immediately falls silent. "I'm sorry, I got lost in the moment," she mutters softly.
I can't say anything. It hurt that Elias would fall for another female; no matter how many times I tried to push it down, not to care, I did. I couldn't get over it.
I scratch my neck nervously, and before I can say anything to make this less awkward, Olivia walks into the room. "Oh! Hello Mia! Hi Kat." She says, casting nervous glances between the two of us.
"Hello," I say, smiling at her.
"I was just gonna see if you guys wanted to get some food?" She asks.
"That sounds great," Mia says. She stands up slowly, a sleeping Emerson in her arms. Omega Tara steps into the room quietly, and I realize Mia must have mind linked her. I would only be able to communicate with them that way once I was their Luna. Mia nods her head toward Emerson, and Tara takes the small bundle from Mia's hands and leaves.
"I don't know about you, but I could drink," Mia says. The last thing I wanted to do was sit here and drink with my mate's wife while he fought my pack. But I find myself nodding at her.
"What are we thinking?" Olivia asks, pulling open the fridge and peering inside. She turns to me suddenly, grinning. "Pizza." My stomach growls loudly at the sound, and they giggle.
Mia pulls the fridge open before offering me a bottle of white wine. I accept it; happily, I don't drink, but I occasionally enjoy a glass of wine. She watches me as I down a glass before tipping her glass at me and downing her glass. By the time Olivia appeared with a pizza box, we had emptied the bottle.
"Whoops," Mia giggles, shaking the empty bottle at me. "Good thing I have more," she shouts, grabbing another bottle from the fridge.
I was feeling the first bottle, the warm sensation of the alcohol settling in. I felt good. I may be a wolf, but knocking back this wine as fast as we had would do the trick.
Olivia watches with two wide eyes, darting from the bottle to the both of us. "Oh no, you guys are gonna be trouble, aren't you?" She groans, placing the pizza box on the table.
"No," I reply, "I just want some Pizza."
Mia bursts out laughing, and for how small she is, I'm not surprised that she was a little more than drunk. "You know what, Kat?! I'm a little upset with how Elias has been treating you. You are so sweet," she says.
I look up from my slice of pizza, sipping yet another glass of wine. I was drunk.
"Well, I say we do something about that." I slur, pointing at the door. Mia smiles at me and exclaims, "You're right!" before marching out the door. Much to Olivia's protest, I follow.
