Chapter Four

[Kat's P.O.V] Their words are low and deep, causing the vibrations of their voices to sound disfigured and mumbled. My train of thought is muddled as my eyes lock on the only man that will forever hold my attention. Elias is facing me as a very tense Beta Ky stands with his back to me. From where I was standing I was invisible to them. Elias' lips are pressed into a thin line as he talks to Beta Ky, absentmindedly rubbing the dark stubble on his chin. His gleaming green eyes settle ahead somewhere level with Beta Ky's ear. This man was glorious, and Kit was not hiding her disapproval. His long-sleeved, light gray collard under-shirt fit his broad chest well. The black vest he wore over top hugged every muscle due to the four-button clasps down the front of it. My fingers itched to fix his slightly crooked dark gray tie that was perhaps tucked under the top of his vest at one point but now lays astray at his chest. Elias suddenly stiffens, and I know he's now aware of my presence. He turns to look at me, but his eyes settle near my shoulder. "Kat," He sighs, and my eyes can't seem to look away from this impressive man. I yearned to run my hands through his dark hair, to press my plump lips to his. I knew it would be a lost cause, but it didn't help the dirty thoughts filtering through my head. Beta Ky senses the change in the area and turns to me. "How are you doing today, Kat?" The small talk seemed ironic at the moment, but I knew it was necessary if I wanted to stay closer to Elias. "Fine," I offer, once again casting a glance around the room. Alpha Tanner and Lexi stood center of a small group of my pack. They were smiling, and they looked happy. Instantly I was filled with jealousy. I wanted that. Elias must have sensed the change in the air and cleared his throat loudly. Unintentional or not, the whole party's eyes are on him instantly. I could see why, though; this man screamed attention. "I think I speak for everyone here when I say how happy I am to witness another great pairing destined by the Moon Goddess herself. I am pleased to announce that I, too, have found my destined mate." His voice radiates throughout the room, and everyone casts glances my way for the first time tonight. I'm suddenly self-conscious as I realize it would be wise to talk instead of standing here gawking at my so-called mate. The smug look on his face tells me that I was right about him being a complete ass hat and that he had, in fact, planned for this to happen. "Elias is completely right when he says how perfect Lexi and Alpha Tanner look together. Just look at how he can't keep his eyes or his hands off her." I get a few chuckles from the crowd and push on eagerly. "And Lexi." I mutter almost bashfully, looking at the petite dark blonde. "Even though we met on such unlikely terms, I would love to have a close relationship with my future Luna. I hope I stand by her side as she guides us through decisions as a pack." Alpha Tanner smiles brightly at me, pulling Lexi closer toward his side. "Thank you," she gushes happily, looking up at him with adoring eyes. Everyone seems to be drawn toward them, taking all the eyes from Elias and me. "I'm gonna go take a lap around," I say to Ky, who nods, turning his blue eyes to Elias. Before I said anything I would regret later, I needed to get away from him. Daniel catches my arm as I walk past him, and I gratefully smile at him. "Hey, KitKat," he says, and I could smell the alcohol that radiated from him. Of course, wolves usually had to consume a good amount of alcohol before we felt anything. Still, he sure had drank more than that. "How much have you drank?" I ask, the worry evident in my tone. "Enough," he chuckles. "You look incredible." His eyes dart down the length of me, darkening with lust. "Daniel," I warn, my wolf not liking the attention Daniel was giving me. "Oh, come on, Kat, don't tell me you haven't thought about me that way." He drunkenly slurs, his hand pulling my waist closer to his. Before I can react, a voice comes from behind me. "What the hell?" A shiver runs through me as I shove Daniel away from me to face a seething Elias. "Elias-" I begin, but he cuts me off. "Save it. I heard every word," he says, suddenly calm and collected. "I can't be happier for you because at the rate this was going, I was never planning on mating with you." I can't think of anything else to say as he turns a retreating form on me. Hurt. Betrayal. White Hot Anger. All these emotions filter through me; before I know it, the room gets stifling hot. I had to get out of here before I did something I would regret. I needed air. I needed to be able to process what had just happened. But, unfortunately, I couldn't breathe as I found my way outside. The breeze feels great on my sweating form. I look up at the moon, wondering why the moon goddess had paired me with someone so infuriating. My ears pick up on what sounds like a struggle, and I'm grateful for the distraction. "Leave me alone, Tyler," I hear a high-pitched voice say, definitely female. "Oh, come on, Lisa," The other voice replies, this one deeper, definitely manly. I don't hesitate to take off when I hear a low-pitched yelp from the same direction. As I get closer, a scene unfolds, a rogue has a female pinned against the ground. "HEY," I yell and yank him up by his collar. For a moment, I'm taken aback by his strong physical appearance. His nostrils flared in aggression, and I knew this was a fight I wasn't going to win. Suddenly her smell hits me. She was in heat. I had no chance against this male whose only thought was to claim. He circles me with a predatory gaze, and my eyes flicker, my wolf ready to consume this threatening male. His challenge had been made known as he let out a howl and charged at me. My thoughts reflected to when I was little when my father taught me how to fight.
