“What the f**k happened?” Darius was yelling, no yelling is the wrong way to describe what he was doing. He was beyond angry or even furious, he was losing control.
“I don’t want to talk about it!” Sheara was not going to stand by and be addressed like that.
“To hell you don’t! You will answer my questions!”
“And I said I won’t! It’s got nothing to do with any of you! She’s MY daughter and it’s none of your damn business!”
Darius couldn’t take being addressed like that. No one has EVER spoken to him in such a way; well except his father and brother, but they are long since gone and he will not stand for it. Grabbing her by the shoulder’s he forcibly turned her around to face him.
“Don’t you dare walk away from me! You will tell me the truth!” The shock and fear on Sheara’s face was clear for his golden, dragon eyes to see.
“Touch me again and you will be sorry! I am not to be man handled by you or anyone else! And keep yelling and nothing you say or do will stop me from leaving!”
It is at this point that Aria decided to step in. It was plain for everyone to see that Darius was losing control and fast. NO ONE wanted a full-blown dragon transformation in the middle of his study, it MIGHT just be difficult to replace an entire house.
“Look Sheara, I understand that somethings you don’t like to share with strangers, and we most probably aren’t more than that to you. But we would really like to be, you know? And there are somethings that we HAVE to know if it’s going to put us all in danger.”
“You want to know how my ex-husband abused and raped me?! You want to know the things he did? How he kept us all in cages until he realised the power Kendy has?! The people he has murdered to get us back?! Or is it because you want to do the same?! Well, you can ask someone else to tell you, `cause I’m not f*****g talking about it!” with that Sheara turned around and left the room, leaving a shocked room behind. Darius had gone white as snow on her declaration. Slowly without a further word, he turned around and left, leaving a shell-shocked Aria, Troy, Alexandro and Kamaria behind.
Leaving the house, Darius walked by smell and memory to the beach. He knew the surrounding area around the house like the palm of his hand. He always made sure to keep the area clean of anything that can prevent him from walking outside, causing him to injure himself. He was so shaken by what he had heard that he couldn’t shift. His body was vibrating, his teeth and nails had elongated, but he couldn’t bring himself to shift, though he knew that if he would speak out load, he would breathe fire, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t shift.
He was confused, sad, and mad and every other emotion you could think off. But mostly he felt an overwhelming hatred to the unknown man that had made Sheara and her children suffer so much. It was no wonder they were so closed off and dependent on each other. And then he had gone and locked them in a room as well! What kind of monster had he become?!
“We’re not a monster! We’re just, well… uhm…” his dragon was restless, he didn’t like Darius’s thoughts and feelings.
“Maybe it’s time for us to control ourselves better!”
“I’m a DRAGON! I’m supposed to be big and scary; control isn’t a part of that!”
“Well she was SCARED of US! US! Not someone else. You saw it too! And I want to protect her, but I also want her to actually like us. Maybe even love us.” Darius’s voice was getting softer as he walked, trying to get his dragon to see things his way.
“Well, after everything she mentioned that she had been through, it actually makes her a worthy mate for a dragon.” His dragon was starting to sound more please.
“And here I was thinking you don’t want a human mate.”
“Not a WEAK human, never have, never will! But with her! It’s different, she’s strong without even knowing or realizing it. The moment I saw her, I knew she was special.”
“Ja well, I knew that too. You left me for fifteen years. Fifteen years that you haven’t spoken with me! I… I thought I lost you somewhere there, after I… we… lost him.”
“After you killed him, there was no reason for me to talk to you. But don’t you f*****g dare let us lose her too.”
“Me! Killed HIM?! What the… You know what, forget it! I’m going home. And don’t YOU dare try and take control again. She needs comfort and love, not a rage-controlled beast!”
Entering into her room after the fight, Sheara immediately saw her children’s tear-soaked faces.
“Mummy, what’s going on? Why’s everyone yelling?” A very tired Rudi was laying on the bed, his asthma had come back in full, combined with his near-death experience, forcing him to stay in bed.
“Mummy, is he going to find us again? Is Darius going to make us go back now? I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done that! But I don’t wanna go back, please don’t make me go back Mummy! I’M SORRY!” By the end Kendy was hysterical, crying uncontrollably.
Sheara herself was shaken. She was never one to lose her cool and fight like that, but this was more than just a secret, their survival was at stake. She had to calm the children down, then start to pack their few belongings. She will have them all leave in the middle of the night. She couldn’t take the risk. She shouldn’t have told them about their history, if it leaked out! And worse, if HE found them again! No, they had to leave!
Pulling Kendy into her lap while sitting next to Rudi on his bed, she rubs slow, soft circles on Kendy’s back to calm her down, when Collin entered into the room. He looked at the children sympathetically before nodding towards Sheara.
“Darius asked me if you would mind meeting him on the beach? There are some things he would like to discuss with you.”
“Well you can tell him I would mind!”
Looking between Sheara and the children, Collin nodded towards the glass door. “If you would step outside with me maybe?”
Frowning, Sheara lifted a much calmer Kendy out of her lap, before walking outside with Collin. Surprise on her face when he slowly closed the door.
“Look Sheara, I understand that at the moment you aren’t feeling very friendly towards Darius, but he has had a hard life and he is the way he is due to everything that has happened. Aria told me that she mentioned to you the first time that he lost his family. Did you know that that included his twin brother? They were closer than any other brothers I have ever known and, from what I understand they were those that could even feel each other’s emotions and pain and such. And he hasn’t had any contact with other people except me and Aria mostly for the last few years, this is new to him to. Just, give him a chance to explain, won’t you?”
Sighing and feeling bad for her own behavior, Sheara glances towards the glass door behind them.
“Don’t worry about them, I’ll make sure they get fed and in bed. Aria will even read them a story and keep them busy.”
“Thank you.” Sheara glances up at the sky, noticing that the sun is starting to set, before setting off towards the beach. She hoped this wouldn’t take long, she would prefer to be back inside by dark.
As she neared the shore, she could see him standing next to where the waves were crashing on the beach. Even though it looked like he was he was gazing over the sea, she knew that he couldn’t see the waves or water that was so beautiful in the late afternoon sun, that was painting pictures of purple, pink and blue in the sky.
“So beautiful” she whispered more to herself.
“Not as beautiful as you.”
Looking up at Darius she felt all the anger, sadness and shock of the day ebbing away, before noticing once more the strange, golden glow in his eyes before it turned back to its normal, natural blue.
Blushing slightly she turned back to the sea before whispering “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have hidden things.”
“Not nearly as sorry as I am for trying to force things from you that you weren’t ready to talk about.”
“It’s just, it feels like every time I talk about him, is the moment he finds us. He haunts us and it’s as if we will never be rid of him. I want to raise my children without his shadow hanging over us all the time!”
“I want to help you, you know Sheara. I would love to assist you, protect you. I have my own contacts and maybe, if you tell me, I could? That is, if you want to, of course.”
Slowly Sheara sank to the ground. Pulling her legs up under her chin, she gazed out over the ever-crashing water. Darius sat down next to her, not touching, just close enough to be there for her if she needed him. She was silent for so long that he almost lost hope that she will tell him, when her whispering voice drifted to him.
“I met Keith about eight years ago. It was like love at first sight. I was an orphan without anyone, and he showered me with love and affection. At first, I didn’t understand why, he was the first man to ever do that for me. I was lost in a trance whenever he was near. Being near him, it was intoxicating and even breathing while near him could drive me wild for him. It wasn’t long before he convinced me to ‘marry’ him. We went to the nearest courthouse and got it done. It was only the night after that I learned the truth.
“He was, what he called, a hybrid. His mother was a witch from a coven outside of the city. They lived separated from others in the mountains. Apparently, his father had been a vampire, but left them soon after getting his mother pregnant. He had inherited both his mother and father’s genes. And I was the lucky one to be his life mate.” Her voice had taken on a bitter quality at the last.
Darius’s dragon was enraged. How is that even possible, she’s OURS!
“He forced me to give up my studies, said it was his job to care for me and then we moved to his mother’s place. It was secluded and there he was the leader after his mother. He could do to me whatever he wanted, and no one would interfere. When he realised I was pregnant the beatings stopped for some time. He wanted to protect the children he said. His mother was overjoyed when they realised it was twins. However, when they were born his mother just took one look at Rudi and sneered. She wanted nothing to do with him. He was weak. She would have left him to die! Another member of the coven smuggled him back to my room and helped me to feed him and care for him, hiding him till he was a bit older. Kendy though, she looked at her and said, ‘she will one day be the strongest of us all!’
“But then, 4 years went by and there was no sign of power from her. Keith was furious. He blamed me that none of the children inherited his power. He started locking us in cages. Then another lady appeared, her name was Genève, she became his s*x toy and he left us alone, finally! That was, till one day, Rudi was playing at the top of the steps in the house. Someone pushed him and he lost his balance. I couldn’t reach him, and he was going to get hurt! The next moment this red light surrounded Kendy and burst forth from her. She saved him! Keith and his mother, they were overjoyed!"
Sheara was engrossed in her story that she didn't notice the sudden start in Darius with the flash of gold in his eyes on the mention of the new woman in Keith's live. The mention of her name had triggered memories for him.
“That night, the old wet nurse came back to us. Her name was Patricia. She told me to pack our bags and leave. It was urgent, they were going to kill Rudi and me to keep Kendy and teach her all their ways. But first, before we fled, she taught me how to reject him as my life mate and break the bond. We fled and had been on the run ever since. I filed for a divorce on grounds of abuse, which was granted. Patricia left with us, otherwise they would have killed her, and someone needed to teach Kendy how to use her power. But ever since, whenever Kendy’s power got out of control, he would find us!
“Then two months ago, he and his mother and some of the other members from the coven showed up. They killed Patricia. While she distracted them, the children and I only took this one bag of clothes and we would take the bus, go somewhere, stay a few days, and then leave again. We’re tired Darius, and what scares me more is this thing between us. I don’t WANT another life mate Darius, not again!”
Then suddenly, as tears drips from her eyes, face and nose, Darius cups her face. She can’t help but lean into his touch and the sparks she feels where they touch even though it scared her to do so.
“Shhh Hun, don’t speak, it is okay. For now, just stay here, we will keep you and the children safe. At least now I know what we face. I can promise you; they will never again touch you or the children again. And I’m pretty certain either Aria or Kamaria will know someone that can help Kendy with her powers.” With that said he leaned forward and ever so softly kissed her on the lips. It was a feather light kiss, like no other Sheara had ever experienced. It was soft, filled with care and emotions that Darius couldn’t put into words, but it soothed her sorrow and worry, making her feel safe for the first time in a very long time.
“Thank you Darius, we will stay.”
