The set up
"I want you out of this place right now!" Anna's boss is known to be cruel, ruthless and lacks emotion. She didn't expect this kind of treatment though, she was one to do her job diligently, whatever it takes. "But, sir---" she was rather cut off before her sentence could finish. "Do you think you can steal something from me and get away with it, if I had ten of you in this company, do you think I'll have what I do now?" Jasper Charles spat at her, anger evident in his stance. "But, I didn't do it sir, believe me please." She was closer to tears now, trying to keep the waters at bay. Jasper Charles's eyes narrowed at her, the anger in them refusing to dissipate. "I have proof, Anna. Photographs of you taking the files from my office and handing them over to our competitor. How do you explain that?" Anna's mind raced as she tried to come up with a reasonable explanation. She didn't remember taking any files, let alone handing them over to their competitor. "I don't know what you're talking about, sir. Please, I swear I didn't do it." Jasper Charles scoffed, not believing a word she said. "You expect me to believe that? I trusted you, Anna. Give you the opportunity to prove yourself and this is how you repay me?" Anna felt her heart sink. She had worked so hard to get to where she was, and now it was all being taken away from her. "Please sir, I beg you to believe me. I didn't do it." Jasper Charles's eyes widened in mock surprise. "Oh really? Then why did I find these documents on your desk?" He held up a folder with a bold label reading "CONFIDENTIAL" in big, red letters. "You're lucky I don't call the police on you right now." Anna's heart sank as she realized what had happened. She had been set up. But by who? And why? She couldn't believe that someone would do this to her. "Sir, please, I didn't take those documents. Someone must have put them there." She pleaded with Jasper Charles, hoping to get through to him. Jasper Charles laughed. "Save it, Anna. I've heard it all before. You're fired. And if I find out that you did take those documents, I'll make sure you never work in this town again." Anna felt the tears start to fall down her face as she gathered her things and left the office. She was officially done for. Several days later, Anna pressed the bell and patiently waited for a response, but for a minute there, she got no response, so she pressed it again. "Who is that?" She heard someone ask. It was actually the maid who was talking. "My name is Anna and my friend lives here. Can you tell her I'm outside waiting for her so that she can have the door opened? " She said. "Alright then. Hold on" The lady said, and there was silence. After ten minutes, Anna heard the voice of her friend. "Anna?" She called. "Yes! It's me. I'm glad you answered. I've been calling and texting you, but your line hasn't been going through. What's wrong? Anyway, can you have the gate opened? It's freezing out here" Anna said. "What do you want?" The girl suddenly asked with a mean voice. Anna was quite shocked. "I want to talk to you," Anna replied softly. "You should go home, Anna. I would rather not talk to a poor girl with no life here. You don't even intend to change that wretched life. You simply aim to leach on me, but that won't happen. For your information, the reason the calls and texts haven't been going through is because I blocked you. Wasn't it obvious, or are you that stupid?" She laughed. My eyes let out the tears and my heart was already cracking as a result of her hurtful words. "You should leave before people see your frozen corpse outside" She hissed and dropped the tone. Anna just turned around and started walking away. Tears were flowing from her eyes. She got home, quietly crawled to her room, locked the door and dozed off without realizing. The next morning, Anna woke up and started assuring herself that she would do better. She just had to believe in herself. She doesn't need too many people to be able to help her get to where she wants to be. She decided to go to a company that she has been thinking of and apply there. She washed up, dressed well and ate a light breakfast. Without any further ado, she scurried out of the house with her bag dangling in her shoulders. Eventually, she got a taxi and entered it, which took her straight to the company. However, it was strange that the company staff and even the higher ups weren't looking at her. They just looked down at her and pretended she wasn't there. She was already losing her spirit there when a janitor saw her and asked what happened. Anna briefly explained that she came to apply for a job. The janitor laughed and told her she needed connections to get one at that company. How sad and devastated Anna became when she heard that. Her heart even broke and she started crying again. The janitor could only console her. Anna wiped her tears and decided to go to a bar, where she would drink plenty of drinks and eventually get drunk. She was also thinking of going home late at night. She sighed deeply and walked outside. At that moment, someone crashed on her and something a little hot touched her blouse. She groaned and when she took her eyes to the blouse. She was shocked and alarmed to see that it had already been stained with dark coffee. "No! This is my favorite" She sadly moaned. "I'm sorry…" She heard the man who caused the incident say. Anna sighed deeply and nodded. "It's fine…" Her voice trailed off as her eyes came in contact with the handsome and tall man. "New face? Do you work here? You don't seem familiar though" He said. "Huh… Yes. I actually came for something here" She uttered. "Sorry about that, though. I'm really sorry" He said and Anna forced a smile as she tapped the stained spot. "You don't have to worry, I'm fine," She said. "You don't look fine. Your face might have a smile on it, but I know when a smile is fake. In fact, you look really angry, like you are about to gnaw me into bits and snap my poor bones" He said. Anna couldn't help but laugh. "Well, you are quite right. You're funny as well. Anyway, I recently bought this blouse and this is even the first time I'm wearing this" "Oh my! I apologize for my nuisance. It's all my fault. Shall I make it up to you, huh?" He asked. "No… You don't have to worry about that. I'm fine. Besides, I think the blouse deserves it for wasting my time and ruining my day" She replied. "Ruining your day? How?" He asked. "Never mind" She answered and flashed a small smile. "What if I tell you that I insist on making it up to you?" The man asked. Anna chuckled and shook her head. "What if I also insist that you don't have to worry about it" "It seems like you don't know me, but you should ask them around. I'm really a stubborn type," He said. "I can see that, but trust me, I'm more stubborn" She winked, still smiling. "I doubt that" He laughed and Anna shrugged her shoulders. They found themselves drawing closer and even being acquainted. "By the way, what did you come for? Or won't you tell me?" The man asked. "Nope" She replied, "It's quite personal" "You still won't tell me even if I say I'm the CEO of this company?" He asked. "What!" She exclaimed with her eyes wide open. "Wait, I think I have an idea. You are here to apply for a job?" He asked. "Wow… How do you know?" She asked, and he studied her from head to toe, while stroking his chin. "It's very obvious" He smiled. "Wow, really?" She chuckled and covered her mouth. "Yeah" He nodded, "So, how about I make it up to you by helping you?" He asked, and she faced him. "By helping me? How?" She questioned. "I can help you get a job," He replied. "Really!" She screamed excitedly. "Yes" He smiled and looked at her. However, before he could apprehend what was going on or even guess the next step, Anna jumped up and hugged him passionately. "Thank you! Thank you so much" She whispered and closed her eyes which tears were already escaping out from. The man was just too stunned to speak, as he was very shocked by the sudden embrace he got from a lady he didn't really know too well.
