Episode 1: The girl who had nothing left
The morning rain soaked the university campus, turning the walkways into mirrors of gray skies. Students hurried to lectures with umbrellas and backpacks, laughing as they splashed through puddles. Amara Bennett stood beneath the Faculty of Business Administration building, clutching a worn envelope in trembling hands. She didn’t need to open it again. She already knew what it said. FINAL NOTICE: TUITION PAYMENT REQUIRED. If she failed to pay within forty-eight hours, her name would be removed from the student register. Four years of hard work… Sleepless nights… Part-time jobs… Everything would disappear. She closed her eyes, forcing back the tears threatening to escape. “No,” she whispered to herself. “I’m not giving up.” Her phone buzzed. It was her landlord. UNKNOWN NUMBER She hesitated before answering. “Hello?” “Miss Bennett,” the harsh voice said, “your rent is two months overdue. If you don’t pay by tomorrow evening, I’ll have no choice but to ask you to leave.” “I just need a little more time.” “You’ve already had time.” The line went dead. Amara lowered the phone slowly. She wanted to cry. Instead… She smiled bitterly. “When it rains,” she murmured, “it really pours.” “Talking to yourself again?” A cheerful voice interrupted her thoughts. Sophia Hart skipped toward her carrying two cups of coffee. Her best friend always seemed to smile, even on the darkest days. “I bought you breakfast.” Amara frowned. “You shouldn’t have.” “I know.” Sophia handed her the coffee anyway. “But you would’ve skipped breakfast again.” Amara accepted it with a grateful smile. “Thank you.” The two friends sat on a nearby bench overlooking the busy campus. “So…” Sophia began carefully. “Have you found the tuition money?” Amara looked away. “No.” “My scholarship application was rejected.” “My bank loan wasn’t approved.” “And I’ve already borrowed from everyone I know.” Sophia sighed. “There has to be another way.” “There isn’t.” Silence settled between them. Finally Sophia spoke again. “What if you take a semester off?” Amara immediately shook her head. “If I stop now…” “I may never come back.” Her voice cracked. “I promised my dad I’d graduate.” Sophia reached over and squeezed her hand. “You will.” “I know you will.” ⸻ Across the city… The top floor of Knight Holdings overlooked the skyline. Inside the boardroom, the atmosphere was tense. Damien Knight sat at the head of the long conference table. Thirty-one years old. Youngest billionaire CEO in the country. Feared by competitors. Admired by investors. He calmly closed a financial report. “So…” “You’re telling me our overseas partners are threatening to cancel a ₦15 billion merger.” No one answered. Damien looked up. His sharp gray eyes swept across the room. His assistant finally cleared his throat. “The investors believe the company lacks… stability.” Damien remained expressionless. “And?” “They’re concerned because you’re still unmarried.” The room became silent. Damien slowly leaned back. “So…” “My relationship status is now affecting billion-naira business decisions.” “Apparently… yes.” Another executive spoke carefully. “They believe a married CEO represents long-term stability.” Damien almost laughed. Instead, he stood. “Meeting adjourned.” Everyone quickly left the room. Only his personal assistant, Ethan Brooks, remained. “You look annoyed.” Damien picked up a framed photograph from his desk. It showed him standing beside an elderly woman with a warm smile. His grandmother. Margaret Knight. The woman who had raised him. She had passed away three months earlier. Her final words echoed endlessly in his mind. “Promise me something, Damien.” “Don’t spend your whole life building an empire…” “Find someone worth sharing it with.” He gently returned the photograph to the desk. “I made her a promise.” Ethan folded his arms. “Then maybe it’s time you kept it.” ⸻ Back at the university… Amara hurried toward the administration office. She had one last chance. Maybe… Just maybe… The registrar would agree to give her more time. As she rounded a corner, someone suddenly stepped out of a black luxury sedan parked beside the building. He was speaking on his phone. “…No.” “The contract will be signed today.” “I don’t care how difficult the investors are.” His voice was calm. Confident. Authoritative. Neither of them was watching where they were going. They collided. Coffee flew into the air. Dark liquid splashed across the man’s expensive charcoal suit. The thick contract folder in his hands scattered across the wet pavement. Important documents drifted into muddy puddles. Silence. Absolute silence. Amara stared in horror. “Oh my goodness…” “I’m so sorry!” She immediately knelt to gather the papers. “I wasn’t looking where I was going.” The man looked down at his ruined suit. Then at the soaked documents. His jaw tightened. Before he could speak, several security guards rushed toward them. “Sir!” “Are you alright?” One guard pointed at Amara. “Should we remove her?” Amara’s heart pounded. “I said I’m sorry.” “I’ll pay for the cleaning.” The guards exchanged amused looks. The suit alone probably cost more than everything she owned. The man finally spoke. “Leave us.” The guards froze. “Sir?” “I said…” “Leave.” They obeyed immediately. Amara slowly stood. She finally looked directly into his face. He was taller than she had expected. Handsome. Perfectly composed. Yet there was something lonely in his eyes. He took the folder from her hands. “You attend this university?” “Yes.” “I’m a final-year student.” He noticed the envelope she was still clutching. The words FINAL NOTICE were clearly visible. His eyes lingered on it for a brief second. Then he looked back at her. “You look like someone carrying the weight of the world.” She forced a smile. “And you look like someone whose day I’ve completely ruined.” For the first time… A faint smile appeared on his face. It disappeared almost immediately. “My name is Damien Knight.” Amara’s eyes widened. Everyone knew that name. The billionaire CEO. One of the youngest business tycoons in the country. She had just spilled coffee on one of the richest men in the country. She wanted the ground to swallow her whole. “I’m… Amara Bennett.” He nodded once. “Miss Bennett.” She braced herself. Waiting for him to demand compensation. Or threaten legal action. Instead, he reached into his pocket and handed her a simple white business card. “If you still need help in forty-eight hours…” “Call me.” Amara stared at the card in confusion. “What?” Damien turned and walked back toward his waiting car. Before getting in, he looked over his shoulder. “You’ll soon discover…” “…that accidents sometimes change lives.” The black sedan drove away, leaving Amara standing in the rain with the business card clutched tightly in her hand. She had no idea… That the man she’d just met was about to offer her a deal that would change both of their lives forever.
