Chapter 1: The Interview
Emma Clarke clutched her worn leather purse as she stood in front of the imposing skyscraper. The words Stone Enterprises glinted in silver letters above the revolving doors, a symbol of power and prestige she’d only ever seen in glossy magazines. This was her shot—a chance to escape the small-town life that had always felt too constricting. A chance to prove she belonged in the big city. But it wasn’t just the job making her palms sweat. It was him. “Get it together,” she muttered under her breath, taking a deep breath. She adjusted her blazer and stepped through the doors, immediately enveloped by the scent of polished wood and fresh flowers. The lobby was abuzz with people in sharp suits, their footsteps echoing on the marble floors. Emma’s heels clicked nervously as she approached the front desk. “Good morning,” she said, her voice steady despite the fluttering in her stomach. “I’m here for an interview with Mr. Stone.” The receptionist, a woman with perfectly styled hair and an air of effortless sophistication, glanced at her schedule. “Miss Clarke?” “Yes,” Emma replied, her grip tightening on her purse. The receptionist offered a polite smile. “Take the elevator to the 25th floor. Mr. Stone’s assistant will meet you there.” Emma nodded and made her way to the elevators, her heart pounding with every step. As she rode up, she couldn’t stop the memories from creeping in. The masquerade gala. The warm glow of golden lights. And him. She had met Alexander Stone a little over a year ago, though he hadn’t introduced himself by name. He had been a stranger in a mask, but his presence had been electric, his gaze so intense that it had left her breathless. That night had been a blur of passion and stolen moments, and she had thought she’d never see him again. Yet here she was, about to face the man who had unknowingly changed everything. When the elevator dinged, Emma stepped out onto a floor that screamed power. The walls were lined with abstract art, and the air smelled faintly of leather and citrus. A woman in a sharp black suit approached her. “Miss Clarke?” “Yes,” Emma said, straightening her posture. “This way, please,” the woman said, leading her down a corridor to a large wooden door. “He’s expecting you,” she added before stepping aside. Emma swallowed hard, knocked twice, and pushed the door open. --- Alexander Stone stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, his silhouette framed by the glittering city skyline. He didn’t turn immediately, but Emma felt the weight of his presence. The room was impossibly large, with a sleek desk and minimal decor that emphasized his no-nonsense personality. “Miss Clarke,” he said finally, his deep voice resonating in the space. “Mr. Stone,” she replied, her voice softer than she intended. He turned then, and Emma’s breath caught. Time hadn’t dulled the sharpness of his features or the piercing intensity of his gaze. He looked every bit the powerful CEO, his tailored suit fitting him perfectly, his tie slightly loosened as if to mock the rigidity of his position. For a moment, their eyes locked, and Emma felt the air shift. Did he recognize her? Did he remember? “Have a seat,” he said, gesturing to the chair in front of his desk. Emma obeyed, smoothing her skirt as she sat. Her hands rested on her lap, clutching her purse like a lifeline. Alexander walked to his desk and picked up her résumé, his eyes scanning the paper. “Emma Clarke,” he said, almost to himself. “From Willow Creek.” She nodded, unsure if she should say anything. “You’re here for the personal assistant position,” he continued, his tone cool and professional. “Yes, sir,” she said. He set the résumé down and leaned back in his chair, studying her. “What makes you think you can handle this role?” he asked, his voice sharp. Emma straightened her spine. “I may come from a small town, Mr. Stone, but I’ve worked hard to be here. I’m organized, adaptable, and willing to do whatever it takes to excel in this position.” His lips quirked slightly, though she couldn’t tell if it was amusement or something else entirely. “This position requires more than just competence,” he said, his tone soft but firm. “It demands discretion, loyalty, and the ability to work under pressure. Can you promise me that?” “Yes,” she said without hesitation. He leaned forward, his eyes narrowing slightly as if testing her resolve. Emma held his gaze, refusing to flinch. Finally, he nodded. “Very well. Welcome to Stone Enterprises, Miss Clarke.” Emma released the breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. “Thank you, Mr. Stone,” she said, her voice steady despite the whirlwind of emotions inside her. He stood and extended a hand, and she shook it, her skin tingling at the contact. “Your training begins tomorrow,” he said. “Be here at 8 a.m. sharp.” “Yes, sir,” she said, rising from her chair. As she turned to leave, she hesitated. For a moment, she wanted to ask if he remembered her, if that night had meant anything to him. But she bit her tongue and walked out, her heels clicking against the polished floor. --- The elevator ride down felt surreal. Emma clutched her purse tightly, her mind racing. She had done it—she had secured the job. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that working for Alexander Stone would be far more complicated than she had anticipated. When she stepped out into the lobby, the cool air hit her like a wake-up call. She took a deep breath and pulled out her phone to call her best friend, Sophia. “Hey, how’d it go?” Sophia’s voice chirped on the other end. “I got the job,” Emma said, a smile breaking across her face despite the turmoil in her chest. “That’s amazing!” Sophia exclaimed. “I told you, you’re unstoppable!” Emma laughed softly. “Thanks, Soph. I’m just... I don’t know. It feels like I just stepped into a whole new world.” “Because you did,” Sophia said. “And you’re going to crush it. Let’s celebrate tonight, okay? My treat.” Emma agreed, though her thoughts were still tangled. As she walked out of the building, she glanced back at the towering skyscraper. Her new life was beginning, and she couldn’t help but wonder what it would cost her.
