The air was cool as Emma walked down the dimly lit streets, her arms folded against the chill. The events of the evening lingered in her mind. She hadn’t planned to talk to Alexander as much as she had at Michael’s place. But something about the way he carried himself now—calm, respectful, and patient—made her feel slightly less guarded. When she reached her apartment, her phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen. It was Alexander. Alexander: Just wanted to say thanks for letting me walk you home earlier. I appreciate it. She stared at the message for a moment, then sighed and decided to reply. Emma: It’s just walking, Alexander. Nothing to thank me for. She set her phone down, expecting that to be the end of it. But another buzz followed. Alexander: Even so, it means something to me.
