Chapter1:Night Out With My Boss
“Call it a night,” Malcom ordered, his deep voice slicing clean through the high-end private dining room. “All of you. Out.”
The silence that followed was immediate, absolute, and suffocating.
Just moments ago the exclusive glass-walled private dining room at L’Aura had been booming with loud, triumphant laughter.
The executive team had been four bottles deep into vintage champagne, celebrating the closure of a multi-billion-dollar acquisition that had taken eight brutal months of cutthroat negotiations to finalize.
Emma, sitting near the edge of the table in her fitted emerald dress, had spent the entire evening playing the role of the immaculate executive secretary—taking polite sips of sparkling water, coordinating the waitstaff, and attempting to ignore the undeniable tension that had filled the air the moment Malcom Vance walked into the restaurant unannounced.
He hadn’t been scheduled to attend. Malcom was a man who operated on absolute efficiency, rarely gracing social gatherings with his presence unless a contract required his physical signature. Yet an hour into the dinner the heavy mahogany doors had swung open and the billionaire CEO had stepped inside.
His presence alone had rewritten the energy of the entire floor. Custom charcoal suit tailored to his broad frame, dark tie loosened just enough at the throat to look lethally undone, and a cold, calculating aura that made grown executives sit up straighter in their seats.
He had ignored the eager greetings, the offered seats, and the nervous small talk of his senior partners. His dark, sharp eyes had swept the room once before locking directly onto Emma.
It hadn’t been a glance.
It had been a claim.
For two agonizing hours, while the rest of the table drank and boasted, Emma had felt the oppressive weight of his gaze burning into her skin.
Every subtle movement she made—smoothing the silk of her dress over her thighs, lifting her glass, tilting her head to speak to a partner—Malcom watched with a predatory, quiet focus that made her throat dry and her pulse race between her legs.
The silent, unspoken desire that had been simmering beneath two years of late-night office hours, strict commands, and sharp professional boundaries had suddenly threatened to boil over. She had felt it every time she crossed her legs.
Every time she reached for a file and his eyes followed the line of her throat. Every time she had to stand close enough to catch the scent of his cologne and force herself not to lean in.
And now, with four simple words, he cleared the room.
The executives didn’t question him. Nobody ever questioned Malcom Vance. Within thirty seconds the senior partners scrambled to gather their coats, murmuring polite goodnights that went entirely ignored, and filed out the door.
The heavy mahogany doors clicked firmly shut, leaving only the soft ambient hum of the city lights outside the floor-to-ceiling windows and the deafening, electric silence between them.
Emma sat frozen for a fraction of a second, her heart hammering violently against her ribs.
She grabbed her leather clutch from the table, knuckles white as she prepared to stand. She needed to leave. She needed air. The atmosphere in the room had shifted from corporate celebration to something thick, heavy, and dangerously volatile—something that felt like the air right before a storm breaks.
“Mr. Vance,” she began, keeping her voice as steady and professional as her trembling breath would allow. “If there isn’t any further paperwork required for the morning—”
“Did I say you could leave, Emma?”
The command was soft, smooth, and laced with an unquestionable authority that pinned her to the spot.
He didn’t wait for her reply. In two long, deliberate strides Malcom closed the distance between them.
The sheer size of him towered over her chair, blocking out the warm ambient lighting of the restaurant and trapping her in his shadow.
The rich scent of his expensive cologne—sandalwood, dark bourbon, and pure luxury—flooded her senses, making her head spin and her thighs press together under the table.
Emma stood up abruptly, desperate to bridge the physical power gap between them, but rising only brought her face-to-face with his chest.
She took a half-step back. The edge of the heavy mahogany dining table pressed against her lower back, leaving her nowhere to run.
“You’ve been avoiding my eyes for the last hour,” Malcom purred, his voice dropping an octave, turning into a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated right through her chest and settled low in her stomach.
“I was doing my job, Mr. Vance,” Emma breathed, her chest heaving as she fought to maintain her composure. The silk of her dress suddenly felt too thin, too tight across her breasts. “I was ensuring the partners were entertained.”
“f**k the partners.” He rasped the words quietly, taking another step forward until his polished leather shoes touched the toes of her heels.
He raised one hand, long broad fingers reaching out with agonizing slowness. He didn’t grab her. Instead his knuckles lightly grazed the side of her throat, tracing the rapid, chaotic pulse hammering beneath her skin.
The barest contact sent a violent bolt of electricity straight down her spine and straight between her legs.
“You weren’t looking at them,” he continued, voice dark and intimate. “You were thinking about what happened in my office last Tuesday.
The way you stood too close when you handed me those contracts. The way your breath hitched when I leaned over you to point something out. The way you didn’t move away.”
Emma’s lips parted on a soft, involuntary sound. Heat flooded her cheeks, her neck, the soft skin between her thighs. “Malcom, please—”
His eyes darkened at the sound of his name. “Say my name like that again.”
She swallowed hard, pulse thundering under his knuckles. The air between them felt charged, heavy, almost impossible to breathe.
Two years of late nights, of watching his hands move across documents, of feeling his eyes on her when he thought she wasn’t looking, of lying awake imagining what those hands might do if he ever stopped holding back—everything was crashing into this single moment.
Malcom’s fingers slid higher, slow and deliberate, until they rested just beneath her jaw, tilting her face up with the lightest pressure.
His thumb brushed the corner of her mouth. Once. Twice. Lingering on the soft, full curve of her lower lip as if testing how much she could take before she broke.
“You’ve been driving me out of my mind,” he said, the words rough, almost angry with restraint. “Every time you sat across from my desk in those tight little skirts. Every time you brought me coffee and your perfume lingered after you left. Every time you looked at me like you were terrified of what I’d do if I ever got you alone… and still wanted it anyway.”
Emma’s breath came in short, shallow bursts.
Her hands had somehow risen to his chest, palms flat against the solid heat of him through the fine wool of his suit. She should push him away. She should step sideways and walk out that door and pretend this never happened. Instead her fingers curled into the fabric, holding on.
“Tell me you knew this was coming,” he whispered, so close now that his breath ghosted across her lips. His other hand settled on her waist, broad and possessive, fingers splaying over the silk as if mapping the exact place he intended to grip her later. “Tell me you’ve thought about it. About me. About what I’d do to you the second I stopped pretending I could keep my hands off you.”
“Yes,” she confessed, the word torn from her throat, raw and unbidden.
A dark, victorious sound rumbled low in Malcom’s chest. His grip on her waist tightened, pulling her the last fraction of an inch forward until the hard line of his body pressed fully against hers.
She could feel every controlled, restrained inch of him—the heat, the tension, the unmistakable evidence of how hard he was fighting not to take everything he wanted right here against the table.
Malcom’s forehead dropped to rest against hers. Their mouths were a breath apart. His eyes were black with want, heavy-lidded and completely unhinged.
“You’re not going home tonight, Emma,” he rasped, the promise absolute. “You’re coming up to my suite. And I’m going to make you forget every single rule you’ve ever held onto.”
Then, finally—after two years of denial, after an entire evening of watching her, after clearing the room and trapping her and touching her like he already owned her—Malcom closed the last remaining distance and claimed her mouth with his.
