Facing matric exams & unexpected pregnancy loss, I navigated grief & academics, finding strength
Episode 1
The Unfair Expectation
I trudged through the school gates, my mom by my side. It was a constant reminder that I was different. As a pregnant teenager in grade 12, I felt like I was treated like a child. The principal's words still echoed in my mind: "Don't come to school without your mom. We can't be responsible for you."
It wasn't fair. I wasn't the only pregnant girl in school, but I was the only one being singled out. My mom had to accompany me every day, like I was incapable of taking care of myself. When she couldn't make it to school for a Life Sciences revision, I was marked absent. The principal's reaction was brutal when I explained the situation. He pushed and insulted me in front of my peers. I ran out of the office, tears streaming down my face.
The humiliation lingered, making it hard to focus on my studies. But I was determined to succeed. I showed up to write my Life Sciences exam, despite the drama. My mom was late, and the deputy principal pulled me out of the exam, leaving me waiting outside while my mom arrived. It was a painful reminder that my situation was far from over. Little did I know, things would get even tougher.
