Chapter 19

Raina I thought of going to my mother-in-law's house. I need to explain to her about what Mrs. Mendoza told her yesterday. She is Evo's mother, so I don't want her to think worse of me. When I arrived at her house, a maid opened the door for me. "Where's Mommy? Is she here?" I asked the maid who opened the door for me. "She's in her room, Ma'am Raina. Ma'am Emilia is sick, so she can't get up," the maid replied to me. When I entered the house, I immediately went to my mother-in-law's room. I found her trying to reach for the glass of water on top of the small table near the bed. I quickly helped her reach the glass of water. "What are you doing here in my house?" my mother-in-law asked me coldly. She was sick, so she spoke weakly and slowly. If she weren't sick, I'm sure I would have been deafened by her sermon and she might have pushed me out of her house. "I came here to explain to you, Mom. You're mistaken in thinking that I'm badmouthing you to people I know or to my clients. I don't know who is spreading those words, but I assure you it's not me, Mom," I explained to her at length. "Do you think I will believe you after hearing what Cora told me yesterday?" She gave me a sharp look. I need to stay calm for Evo's sake. I owe him a lot, so I must respect and extend my patience with his mother. "Believe it or not, but I'm telling the truth, Mom. Not once have I spoken ill of you to anyone. I didn't grow up with a mother who loved me, so as the mother of my husband, I consider you my real mother," I sincerely told her. She seemed touched by what I said because her expression suddenly softened. The darkness on her face also lessened. "My head hurts, so let's talk some other time," she dismissed me. "I will take care of you, Mom. I will look after you until you get better." "I don't need your care. I have maids at home to take care of me." "No, Mom. I won't leave even if you push me away. Evo isn't here, so I'll be the one to take care of you," I insisted firmly. Evo's mother couldn't do anything when I insisted on staying at her house to take care of her. I stayed by her side all day and took care of her until she felt better in the evening. Only then did I decide to go home once I was sure that her fever had subsided. "My driver will take you home," my mother-in-law said when I told her I was leaving. "It's okay, Mom. I brought my car," I replied with a smile. I'm happy because I can see that my mother-in-law's attitude towards me has somewhat changed. It seems I've managed to soften her heart by taking care of her. Even though she hasn't fully accepted me as her daughter-in-law yet, I'm still happy because the change in her cold treatment towards me shows that she's close to accepting me as part of their family. My mother-in-law just nodded at me and didn't insist on having her driver take me home. I left her house feeling happy and light-hearted. When I exited the gate, I saw a black car parked near the back of my car. I couldn't understand it, but it felt like eyes were watching me from inside that car. The windows were tinted, so I couldn't see if there was anyone inside or not. I took a deep sigh and just shrugged it off. Maybe I was just tired from taking care of my mother-in-laws which is why I was feeling and thinking all sorts of things. I didn't pay attention to the car and just got into my own car. Perhaps the owner of that car is a neighbor of my mother-in-law. While on the road and traveling home, I started to feel hungry. I was still full earlier, so I didn't eat at my mother-in-law's house. But now I suddenly felt hungry, so I parked my car on the side of the road and walked inside the fast food to have dinner. After I had dinner, I immediately went out to return to my car. I was only a few steps away from my car when suddenly someone pulled my hand. I frowned when I saw that it was my stepmother. "What are you doing here? And what do you need from me?" I asked her coldly. "I'm following you. And who else would I need but you?" she replied with raised eyebrows. "And why are you following me?" I suddenly had a bad feeling when I saw that she was with two men who looked like goons. "Don't blame me, Raina. I'm doing this for my daughter. I can't bear to see her getting drunk every day because of what you did to her. That's why I'm here to teach you a lesson." Minerva's expression suddenly changed and became dangerous. "Take her inside my car before anyone notices us," she ordered the two men with her. I didn't wait for the two men to get close to me and immediately ran fast. I didn't run towards my car because I was sure that before I could open the door, they would catch up with me. So instead of heading to my car, I ran across the street even though there were many passing vehicles. I stopped running and my eyes widened when I saw a black car speeding towards me. But before the car could hit me, I managed to run to avoid it. I covered both my ears when I heard the loud screeching of tires and what seemed like the car crashing into something. When I turned around, my eyes widened as I saw my stepmom lying on the road, drenched in her own blood. Her eyes were closed and she seemed to not be breathing. "The woman crossing was hit by the black car!" I heard a man shout. Black car? Is it the black car that I saw earlier outside my mother-in-law's house? And why did my stepmom get hits? Is she chasing after me? A few meters away from where my stepmom was lying, the black car that tried to run over me was stopped. It was also the car that hit my stepmom. My eyes widened when I saw that it was really the black car parked near the back of my car that I had seen earlier. Is that car following me? And why did the driver want to kill me? Accidentally, my stepmom was the one the driver of that car hit instead of me. I saw the black car drive away as if nothing happened. Who is the driver and why does he want to kill me?
