Chapter Two –
Monday morning at Moonridge High was a nightmare.
Luna Gray walked through the front gates with her hood up and her head down. Every step felt heavier than the last. She could still feel the pain from the rejection, like a bruise inside her chest.
Whispers followed her.
“That’s her.”
“The rejected one.”
“Can you believe Ethan dumped her like that?”
Luna clenched her fists. Ignore them, she told herself. Just survive the day.
She reached her locker and tried to open it. It stuck.
Of course it did.
“Need help?” a smooth voice asked.
Luna jumped and turned around.
Kai stood beside her, leaning casually against the lockers. Black jacket. Messy hair. Silver eyes that looked way too calm for a high school hallway.
Her heart skipped. Annoying.
“You shouldn’t sneak up on people,” she muttered.
He smirked. “You shouldn’t look so tempting when you’re angry.”
She stared at him. “Did you just call me tempting?”
“Very,” he said easily.
Luna slammed her locker open. “You’re trouble.”
“Obviously.”
Before she could reply, the hallway went quiet.
Ethan Cole appeared.
He walked toward them like he owned the place, golden eyes burning. His friends followed him, all muscles and ego.
“Kai,” Ethan said coldly. “Stay away from her.”
Kai raised a brow. “Didn’t you reject her?”
Ethan’s jaw tightened. “She’s still pack property.”
Luna snorted. “Wow. I get rejected and owned? Lucky me.”
A few students laughed.
Ethan glared at her. “This isn’t funny.”
Kai stepped closer to Luna, close enough that she could feel his warmth. “Actually,” he said, voice calm but sharp, “it is.”
Ethan growled.
The bell rang, loud and sudden.
Students scattered. Teachers yelled. Life went on like nothing had happened.
Kai leaned down and whispered, “Meet me after school. Football field.”
Luna’s breath caught. “Why?”
His smile turned dark. “Because you’re stronger than you know.”
He walked away before she could answer.
Luna stood there, heart racing.
Behind her, Ethan watched with clenched fists.
And Luna realized something important.
High school was about to get very dangerous.
