Why Heart?

1282 Words
“Really now. And how is that?” Aya asked. “Spend millions and hire a husband.”      Aya gaped at her boss after hearing what she just say. “Excuse me?”    Her boss smiled and crossed her arms over her chest before she leaned against the couch. “How do you think I got out of the marriage arranged for me?”     That caught Aya’s attention. Her boss indeed was in an arranged marriage before, but then she suddenly got married to her husband now. “Can you explain it to me? I’m really confused about what you are talking about.” Aya said. “I would if I could. But let me give you a piece of advice. If you badly wanted to get out of the arranged marriage and be able to go to that reunion, I suggest you consider that card.” *******************************.   After talking to her boss, Aya went back to her office and Ofie came soon after. Ofie brought her a coffee frappe and milk tea for herself.  “What did you and the boss talked about?” Ofie asked but Aya didn’t answer her.   Ofie figured that it was confidential so she didn’t ask again. Aya was silent as she stares at the black and gold business card in her hand. “Ofie...” She called. “Hmm?” Ofie hummed as she took a sip of her milk tea.  “Would I be mad if I hire a husband?” Aya asked and then Ofie spat her drink.   Then she looked at Aya as if she transformed into another being. “Are you mad?!” Ofie exclaimed and Aya sighed. “Maybe I am,” Aya said, and then she groaned and started rubbing her palms on her face.   Ofie let out a sigh. “What you need right now is rest. You worked hard for the presentation; you should rest your mind so you won’t be thinking about stupid things.” Ofie told her. “I think you are right,” Aya said, and then she stood up and grabbed her bag. “See you on Monday,” Ofie said.   Aya waved her goodbye and left her office. She went straight to the parking lot but then she remembered that she didn’t bring her car to work because of the number coding.  Aya groaned as she hailed a taxi. Once she got into one, she told the driver her address and let out a loud huff. She leaned back in the seat while looking out the window. She watches the street lights flicker as they drove past it. And before she knows it, they arrived at their destination.   She paid the driver and before she could open the door, it was opened from the outside. And to her surprise, it was Andoy and he was smiling brightly at her. “Good evening.” He greeted her.   Aya rolled her eyes and climbed out of the taxi and shut the door close. Once the taxi drove off, she turned away from Andoy and started walking towards her house.   Maybe it was because of exhaustion, but Aya didn’t notice the oncoming vehicle as she crosses the street. And before she could get hit by the vehicle, she was roughly pulled back and she was engulfed with the warmth of strong arms. “Watch where you’re going! Damn it!”   Aya gulped and she slowly looked up. It was Andoy. He was still glaring after the vehicle that almost runs her over. And he was the one who pulled her and his arms were currently wrapped around her. When he looked down at her, she can clearly see the worry in his eyes. “Are you okay?” He asked and Aya could only nod.   Andoy let go of her but his hand still held her hand. Aya didn’t know what just happened but somehow she found her heart racing fast, and she could feel her cheeks burn. “Are you sure you’re okay? You look flushed.” He said and it brought Aya back to reality.   She abruptly pulled her hand from his hand and she cleared her throat. “Thanks.” She said and then she jogged towards her house, leaving Andoy gawking at her.   Aya unlocked her front door and quickly went inside, closing the door behind her. Her hand went up to her chest and feel the fast beating of her heart. “What the ...”   She cursed as she recalled what happened outside a few minutes ago. Why did her heartbeat so fast when she was in his arms? Why did she feel all giddy when he pulled her back like a scene from the Korean dramas that she loves to watch? Why heart?    When she realized where her thoughts are heading, she shook her head to dispel whatever ridiculous things her mind is starting to come up with. She huffed and then she quickly went upstairs. ******************************.   The next day, it was Saturday and Aya was doing her laundry in front of her house. She just turned on the washing machine after putting in her clothes from the basin, when her eyes suddenly fell on the bakery right across the street.   And at the same time, Andoy came out of the bakery without wearing any shirt just his faded ripped jeans. His washboard abs were in full display as well as his sculpted chest and arms. Aya cannot help but gawk at the scene before her that she even dropped the basin she was holding.    When she felt her throat dried up, she turned around and picks up the basin. Then she internally scolded herself for staring at him. She should’ve been annoyed with him, but somehow she is not herself since she had her heart beating fast once again.   She shook her head and placed the basin back on its shelf. Then she made another mistake of looking towards the bakery, and she saw Andoy talking to Jelai while putting on his button-up short sleeve shirt. Then she saw him walked towards the Ford Raptor pickup truck parked next door and unlocks it.    She didn’t know that the truck was his, especially she knew how expensive the vehicle and Andoy seems to be the type to commute every day. Then she was startled when she saw Andoy walking towards her gate. He still had that cocky grin that annoys her the most. “Hey, I know a newly opened laundry mat just two blocks away. Why don’t you try it instead of tiring yourself of doing the laundry?” Andoy told her.   Aya cleared her throat and looked away. “I can manage but thanks.” She said.   Andoy smiled and run his fingers through his hair. “Well if you insist. Anyway...” He trailed as he looks at Aya from head to toe. “Baggy shirt suits you; you look sexy and good enough to eat.” He said.   Aya looked at him with wide eyes, and then he winked at her before grinning like a Cheshire cat. Then he turned around and walked back towards the truck climbed in and drove away. Aya scoffed and then she froze when she suddenly remembered she wasn’t wearing a bra.   Her eyes widened and her cheeks turned fifty shades of red in embarrassment. Does that mean Andoy noticed that’s why he said those words? She asked herself, and then she screeched loudly, and then she stomped her way inside her house.   Meanwhile, inside the truck, Andoy cannot help but grin like a madman as he remembered how flustered she looked with what he said. “Cute.”
