chapter 1
Mia Carter clasped her fingers tighter around the steering wheel, her knuckles whitening as she glanced at the dashboard clock. 8:45 AM. She was running late—yet again. Oliver's doctor's appointment was only fifteen minutes off, and she still had to contend with morning rush-hour traffic. Her heart pounded and she pushed on the gas. She hated to have to reschedule anything. Missing work was nearly impossible. Two part-time jobs, rent, and taking care of Oliver left her with no room for mistake. And still, no matter how hard she worked, things always seemed one step ahead of her, just waiting for her to slip. From the back seat, Oliver shifted in his booster seat, his small voice breaking the tense silence. “Mommy, we’re gonna be late.” Mia sighed, forcing herself to sound calm. “I know, baby. I’m trying.” She hated this—rushing, stressing, feeling like she was barely keeping her head above water. If only she had a better job, a more reliable car, a little more help. But wishing wouldn’t change reality. She clutched the wheel and navigated through the New York streets, her dented, old car groaning in protest. The hospital was just a few blocks away. If she could only make it through this next intersection— A horn honked. Mia's gut clenched. The rest of the next few seconds passed in slow motion. She slammed on the brake, but in vain. Her car hurtled forward, and the ghastly crash of metal on metal echoed in the air. The shock made her body lurch against the seatbelt. There was a moment of strained silence. Then— "Mommy, did we hit someone?" Oliver's little gasp broke the silence. Mia's heart pounded in her head as she fought to gather enough strength to look up. She gasped for air. Standing dead inches from her was a black luxury sedan—the kind of sedan that should be reclining within a magazine, not standing on a clogged street. Its sleek gloss now marred by the irreparable bumper dent of her crash. She was nauseated. Oh no. No, no, no… she breathed, her fear swelling in her chest like a mounting tsunami. She barely had enough money for rent—no way in the world she could possibly pay for repairs on whatever this hunk of junk was. Her hand shook as she went to open the door. But before she'd even gotten her mind around what was going on, the driver's side door of the other car swung open. And out came a man who was as expensive-looking as the car. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and impossibly well-dressed—his navy-blue suit tailored to perfection, reeking of money and power. His dark hair was styled to perfection, and from a few feet away, Mia could make out the sharp definition of his jawline. It wasn't his looks that left her breathless, though. It was his presence—the commanding aura that seemed to command attention, the kind of man who was used to being in charge. His face, however, was a long way from joyous. Mia leapt out of her car, already digging through her vehicle for an apology. "I—I'm so, so sorry! I wasn't meaning to—" she flung an ineffective arm out towards her car, words tumbling over one another in abject apology. "I was just trying to get my son to his appointment and—" The man lifted one hand. It was a swift movement, but it brought her up short. "Do you know what make of car you just hit?" He was smooth, but beneath the surface, there was a giveaway edge—measured, tight, like a man keeping his temper in check. Mia swallowed hard. She had no clue what kind of car it was—just that it was expensive. Expensive, expensive. "I—I don't have enough money to have it fixed," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. His frozen blue eyes cut across hers, weighing. His jaw clenched as he thrust his hand into his hair, clearly fighting to contain himself. "Of course you can't," he muttered. There was something in the way he'd said it that irritated her. "This is exactly the reason that people like you should not be driving." People like you. Mia's back straightened. She well understood what that meant. People who were not in a position to pay for amenities. People who worked themselves into the grave just to exist. People who had not been born with advantage like him. She'd crawled, begged on hands and knees if that's all it had taken. But that arrogant assertion brought something out of her—a fleeting flicker of rebellion. "Listen," she blazed, jerking her chin. "I know you're angry with me, but I didn't do it on purpose." His icy stare firmed into a point of concentration, fixed upon hers. "That doesn't make it one whit less fact that you're responsible." Just as Mia was going to say something in her own defense, a small voice cut through the silence. "Mommy?" Mia turned around, her heart breaking as she saw Oliver look up at the man with big, round eyes. His curly brown locks were tousled and his lower lip quivered. The moment the stranger's eyes landed on Oliver, the man's demeanor shifted. The hardness eased—only slightly, but Mia noticed. "Are you angry with my mommy?" Oliver had the courage to ask tentatively. Mia's own breath was frozen. She hated that her child had to see this. The man stared at Oliver for a very long time, his face completely expressionless. Then, to Mia's utter surprise, his face relaxed infinitesimally. "What's your name, kid?" Oliver hesitated. "Oliver." The man nodded slowly, as if committing it to memory. His gaze flickered back to Mia and then over to Oliver. And off you two scurry? To the doctor. Mommy made it a requirement. A wince of a moment flashed across the man's face—a sensation that slipped away from Mia. He took a breath, following the line of his jaw, as if working some problem. And, in a motion Mia could hardly believe, he rose and nodded. "Go." Mia's mouth dropped. "What?" "Take your son in to his appointment. We'll sort this later." Her mouth dropped open in shock. That was all? No threat? No demand for immediate payment? "I—Are you sure?" He glared at Oliver again before nodding. "Yes. But this is far from over." Mia didn't need a second warning. "Thanks," she gasped before almost running back to her car, still reeling from the encounter. She drove out of the parking lot, her head whirling with questions. Who was this guy? And what did 'this isn't over' mean? Something was for sure—her life had just changed in ways she never could have imagined.
