Aurora’s POV
My mom was starting to look better, the bite marks all over her body were starting to close, all signs of infection were gone and her fair complexion started to even out. After her remark about me healing her I haven’t left her side, she passed out almost immediately after saying it and with her healing happening so rapidly she hasn’t woken up yet. The doctors are saying that Alaina, mom’s wolf, had put her in this deep sleep so that her healing wouldn’t be interrupted. I just sat there holding her hands and repeating, “I’m right here mom.”
I sent Payton and a few warriors to check out the trail that Harmony and I had found but they didn’t find anything. Literally nothing. The trail went from being heavy with Kanaan’s scent to nothing once they reached the top of the hill, someone had come back to mask his scent. Dad and Jett asked me about the dead wolf outside of the pack house, but all I could do was cry when they brought it up. Maverick didn’t deserve to die, he did the right thing coming to me and it broke my heart to know that he was gone and I couldn’t even help him or find his sister for that matter. Right now, I need to be with my mom, it’s the only safe place I could be.
“Rory?” I heard Jett say softly as he entered her room. “Rory, you need to come back to the pack house with me. You’ve been here for three days now and the nurses say you aren’t sleeping and barely eating. Come on babe, you know she’s going to be okay.”
I sat in silence as I stared at her, never once meeting his gaze. His hand touched my back and started to rub it as he crouched down beside me, “sweetness, mom wouldn’t want you doing this to yourself. The doctors know she’s going to be okay now. Her healing has practically tripled since she went into this sleep. She will wake when her body is healed enough, just please come home and get some rest and a good meal.”
I kept looking at my mother, the woman who didn’t give me the gift of life but the Goddess gave me the gift of her. Aside from us looking different, we were so similar in personality and heart. This beautiful woman never made me feel that I was any less her daughter. Looking at her I admired everything about her, her auburn hair hugging around her neck, every single freckle on her porcelain like skin, imagining those ocean depth eyes staring at me as she smiled her perfect full face smile.
“Rory? Please just talk to me.” He said interrupting my admiring. “Tell me how I can help.”
I paused for a moment and looked right into his eyes as I started to cry. He pulled me into his arms and pressed me tightly against his chest. I couldn’t contain the tears as they seemed to fall endlessly. “What’s wrong, sweets? She’s going to be okay.”
“This happened because of me.” I whimpered into his ear. He pulled me away from him from a moment, “Rory, no. No, baby this wasn’t because of you. Because of you she’s alive.”
“No J....she got hurt because of me.”
“That’s not true. Ror-“
“It is. It is true. The dead wolf, it’s Maverick. Kanaan’s wolf.” I saw rage and confusion fill his face.
“You killed him? Good riddance.”
“No, I didn’t and I wasn’t going to,” I watched as the rage consumed his face.
“Maverick didn’t have control of his form whenever Kanaan used it to attack her. After the attack, Kanaan let down the block he’d been using against Maverick and shared memories with him. This man, The Reaper, he took Kanaan’s sister. He told him he had to do everything he said or he would kill her. He told him to get close to me, but after Harmony’s warning he knew that that part of the plan wasn’t going to work. So he skipped to the next part, ruining my life. He told Kanaan to attack mom, even said if he killed her he’d do his sister a kindness. Maverick didn’t have any control in any of this except when he came to talk to me and the only reason he did then was because Kanaan was consumed by guilt. I was going to give him the sedative to keep Kanaan in the back of his head forever and banish him to be a rogue.”
“I don’t understand, if that’s the case why is he dead?” Panic consumed me.
“Charlie. The man from my dream, he was there.”
I started freaking out again. “Jett, he killed him with a single look. I thought he was a wolf but now...Goddess J he said he’d be back for me.”
Jett was about to pull me into him when I felt someone touch my shoulder,
“No one will be taking my baby, we will kill anyone that tries.” My mom said in a tone filled with so much protectiveness.
“Mommy!” I jumped up and hugged her neck, then I felt Jett wrap his arms around both of us.
“You’re okay?” I asked as tears started to fall again, “I’m okay honey. Jett, baby do you think you could give Rory and I a moment I need to speak with her?” He nodded and got up to leave the room.
Once the door was shut my mom took both my hands, “Rory, I’m going to tell you some things that may not make sense to you yet but they will so I need you to listen very carefully okay.”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Rory when I died for those few moments, I saw the Moon Goddess,” I looked at her in shock and disbelief, “she told me she was going to give you the power to bring me back, but that you already contain this power and haven’t tapped into it. She didn’t want to do that yet, but because of Kanaan’s choice she didn’t want you to live your life without me. You are special Rory, because your mother was special.” I didn’t know her words could get any more captivating, but as each of those left her lips I found myself hanging onto her every word.
“I met her, sweetie. Your mom, Jenna, she was with the Goddess when I saw her. She was a very powerful wolf, but for your protection she wiped those memories from you. She told me of your past, some of your lineage and she wanted me to give you a message.”
I couldn’t form words. I just sat with my mouth gaping open. My mom stopped and took a breath, she had started crying while she spoke of my mom, she regained some of her composure and continued.
“You come from a powerful werewitch line, one that has gifted every single one of its members with powers. You, my dear, contain great powers that most only ever dream of, but you will need to take your place as Alpha to contain them all. And you can be that because your mother’s true mate is an Alpha.”
I felt my jaw hit the floor at my mom’s words. Powers? Alpha? My mom’s TRUE mate? Her words repeated over and over my head, we had sat in silence for quite some time whenever she spoke up,
“Rory, I know that is a lot to take in but will you please say something?”
“Mom, I can’t. I can’t have ‘great power’, I can’t be an alpha, my moms mate was an i***t drunk that murdered her because it suited him. This can’t be true, none of it is true.” I tried to say like I was convincing her but it sounded more like I was working to convince myself.
“It is true baby, but because your mom died you can choose your destiny.”
“What do you mean?”
“Since you never knew about your father, your real father, you don’t have to be alpha if you don’t want to be. This is all your choice and we will all be supporting you no matter what you choose.”
I thought on her words.
“I need to go, mom. But I have a question first.”
“Anything sweetie.”
“Do you know the pack he is from, my real father?”
“Honey, you have known him your whole life, I never understood why he was so interested in you from the start but now it all makes sense. Alpha Drew from the Chesapeake Pack, he’s your father.” As if my jaw couldn’t get any closer to the floor. I tried to shake off some of the shock but there was just no way to do that right now.
I hugged her tightly and whispered in her ear, “you are my mom, no matter who birthed me.” The breath I didn’t realize she was holding finally released as she let out one final tear,
“I love you my baby, to the Moon Goddess and back.”
