Aurora’s POV
**I am running through the woods, I can feel them chasing me, gaining on me with every step I take. I hear their heavy feet pounding against the ground as he screams at me,”we’re going to get you.” I feel my hair slapping against me as I try to increase my speed, my legs giving out after the intense run with my wolf I’m exhausted. If I can just hit the water, I’ll be safe. They can’t follow me in and they will certainly lose my trail. As I get lost in these thoughts I hear one of them right behind me, feeling his feet against the back of my running shoes. He lunges forward and tackles me to the ground, “you’re mine now.”**
“AURORA!” Hayley yelled as she shook me awake.
“What!?” I shouted back in her face, pushing her off of me. Feeling as if the end of my dream had come true at first I am so glad to see Hayley staring back at me.
“You had the dream again, didn’t you?” As I took in her now worried tone, I glanced down realizing my whole body was drenched in sweat. I simply nodded as I looked into her emerald eyes. Hayley, being my best friend since I first arrived here, has seen the results of this dream quite a few times since it started two years ago. Her worried tone matched by her even more worrisome expression, she hates seeing me like this.
“Was there anything different this time?”
“No, not really. Only that I could kind of hear his voice a little clearer this time. He sounds so creepy. He’s got this husky tone. Gosh it just creeps me out thinking about it.”
“Well maybe you’re getting more and more clues to what it could mean,” she thought for a moment then shook her head and smiled, “but screw the dream, that’s not why I came over. The pack house is having a party tonight and we’re going for once! So get dressed to impress cause we are on the hunt for our mates, or a one night stand. Whichever comes first I suppose.”
I simply laugh at her as I nod and move towards the bathroom. At 18 years old, we’ve had our wolves now for two years and have only just come of age to find our mates. Hayley and I were born three days apart from each other, but other than our age that’s about all we have in common. I commonly compare her personality to wild fire, passionate, defensive and will take out anything or anyone in her way. She is the definition of beautiful, blonde as the sand on the beach that lands just below her shoulder blades, petite from all the years of ballet, emerald eyes that I’m convinced trap the souls of anyone who stares in them long enough, her fair skin reminding me constantly of a porcelain doll. I tell her constantly that her picture is beside the word beauty in the dictionary, but she already knows how stunning she is. The girl is hell bent on finding the “love of her life” in her mate but I’ve seen far too well that mate doesn’t always mean true love.
*Flashback*
“Mommy, mommy! Please wake up, I’m sorry he hurt you! Just please wake up and we can run away.” As a four year old girl I cried into my mother’s chest while she lay there bruised and bloody, completely lifeless after his beating.
“She’s gone, I hated her just as I hate you. I’m giving you a head start, but know that if I find you I will kill you,” my father threatened.
I kissed my mother’s bruised cheek, “I’m so sorry mommy, but know I’ll never forget you and that the Moon Goddess will protect me. I love you.” With that I took off running out the door, running straight to the pack house. I knew that I could find sanctuary there and if I was lucky, the Alpha would show up and I could tell him what happened. It took me hours before I hit the town village and all I could keep thinking is “she was his mate, why would he hurt his mate?”
*Flashback Over”
Needless to say, after losing my mom I ran into the Luna (literally) on the outskirts of the village and was inconsolable. She called the Alpha through her mindlink and took me to her office in the pack house to try and calm me. Once the Alpha got there I got on my knees in a submissive position, but I couldn’t stop my tears from falling. I was worried he would find it disrespectful to not greet him with silence, but instead he placed his hand on my tiny shoulder and asked in a near whisper as to not startle me, “what happened little wolf?” I told them between tears and deep breaths what happened, luckily for me my father showed up on the pack house steps looking for me and let’s just say his life ended right there. The Luna, Magan, and the Alpha, Dominic, adopted me and have raised me as their own ever since.
I am in NO hurry to find my mate, even though my parents say I’ll find them when I least expect it, right now I’m perfectly content with my parents, Hayley and April and of course my adopted brothers Payton and Jett.
“Just wait for me down stairs, I’ll take a shower, get dressed and then we can go okay?” I pleaded for some privacy as I stood in the bathroom doorway.
“Fine.” She stubbornly agreed as she walked out of my room and down the stairs.
After I took off my disgustingly sweaty clothes, I looked at myself in the mirror. My brunette hair falling to my waist after unleashing it from its hair tie, my toned body from all of my running, weight training and softball, the cuts that never healed from the night my father attacked me before he killed my mother bleaching my olive skin, my hazel eyes staring back at me as I took in every inch of myself. “No mate would accept me anyway” I thought. I quickly showered, threw on a royal purple dress that fell just above my knees, my favorite silver wedges and my mom’s necklace being the final touch. It was the last thing I had to remember her. I was always intrigued by the initials on the back, AXH, I wished my mom was here to tell me that story. I ran down the stairs to Magan and Dom chatting with Hayley about the details of this party.
“I swear she’s dragging me.” I proclaimed, hands raised like I was being arrested so they wouldn’t think it was my idea.
“Oh we know dear, she made that known before we ever even asked her anything! Just promise me that you will be careful tonight and watch out for each other, I trust April will be there as well?” Magan responded. The woman’s voice is as smooth as silk, I’ve never heard her raise it except of course when Pay and Jett were arguing, that was the only way she could get them to shut their mouths and listen.
“Yes, Luna. We promise to be careful and April won’t be joining us this time, something about her brother, so we’re actually having Payton go instead.” Hayley said.
As if on cue, Payton came skipping down the stairs. “Yeah, mom. Gotta keep these two girls in check.” He said as he went to screw up our hair.
“Pay, you may be the Alpha Son, but touch my hair and I swear to Goddess I’ll kill you.”
“Fine, Hay. Hands off, I get it.”
Now that the gang was all together, we were all set to leave. We got in the car and headed toward the pack house. My parents chose to live outside of the pack house due to the fact it always had some sort of drama within its walls, even within the senior pack leaders. Instead, my parents bought a house about ten minutes from the pack house, close enough to be there if there was ever an emergency. I loved that home, but two years after Jett went for his mentoring, we moved into a house with one less bedroom about 25 minutes from the pack house that’s completely surrounded by woods. I could tell my dad was ready for Jett to be Alpha, especially with the smaller house and all, I just thought it was weird we moved right before I got my wolf so it’d be harder to train with everyone else at the pack house being further out and all.
As we head to the party all I can think about is the dream and how there’s something familiar about the man’s voice, when suddenly it hits me.
“Oh my Goddess!” I exclaimed, causing Payton to slam on his brakes putting us at a dead stop in the middle of the road.
“What Rory, what the hell is it!?” Hayley shouted at me.
“I remember. I know it, the man from my dream, his voice. Hay....he knew my father, my biological father.”
