Vengeance Wasn’t Due

Jett’s POV I’m going to kill this boy. This Kanaan Rory speaks of. I don’t care his reason, he broke our most important law: attacking a member of leadership, and not just that but this member is my own mother. I will rip his throat out for what he’s done to her. After Rory told me, I ran out of the patient room and straight to my dads office. I could feel Rory trying to mindlink me but I was blocking her out. I started going through the pack members registrar. There are five Canaan’s in our pack, I can’t just go slaughtering all of them for this one idiots actions. Just as I was about to throw the book through my dads window, Rory burst through the door. “Jett, stop. We can’t do this right now. I have his phone number, I know how to look him up but if we reach out to him now he’s going to know we’re onto him. I doubt he thought about masking his scent before he attacked so he doesn’t know that we know. We need to keep that element of surprise at least for now.” I punched the wall at her words, “HOW THE HELL ARE YOU SO CALM!? SHES DYING AND YOUR ACTING LIKE NOTHINGS HAPPENING!!” “Jett, I’ve already watched one mom die. I just have faith that the Moon Goddess wouldn’t do that to me a second time. Dad is a wreck right now, mom is barely hanging on. We have to be strong for them. If we’re not this pack falls apart and everything YOUR family has worked for will be for nothing.” “She’s my mom.” I said as tears welled in my eyes. It was taking everything inside me not to collapse. “She’s my mom too. She’s going to be okay. And Kanaan will pay for his actions, for committing this evil. But you know as well as I do no pack member would do this without a reason, no one wants to suffer that pain of losing their leader. I think there’s more to it and we need the whole story. Let’s get mom and dad through this, then we will find Kanaan. He’s not going anywhere I know that for a fact.” “How do you know?” “Running would make him look guilty. As a matter of fact I wouldn’t put it past him to show up to check on her. We need to increase security at the hospital for now. NO ONE except for us gets anywhere near her room.” I barely nodded and started to wipe my tears away whenever she kissed my cheek. “We’re a team now. We’ll do this together.” She said gently as I pulled her into my arms. I needed to hold her, she was the only thing that was okay. Aurora’s POV I went to the scene of the attack. I needed to see it for myself. Jett went back to the hospital to be with our parents, I knew that’s where he needed to be right now. I decided to shift into Harmony so I’d be able to use her heightened senses to my advantage. “Do you really think she’ll be okay? There was a lot of blood in her room and smelling here now, I’m shocked she’s even still alive.” “She has to be okay. If she dies, I don’t know that dad can survive it. And while Jett is done with his mentoring and training, he won’t be able to take our fathers place if both of them are gone. It will be too much. She has to make it. She has to.” Harmony put her nose to the ground, “Hmm this is weird. I smell Kanaan, his human scent is heavy, then a wolf scent. Maverick’s, but it’s much lighter than the human,” I started to think about what she was saying. Why would his human smell be thicker, unless he had been watching her. Seeing when she was most vulnerable, that’s why he picked here. Her back was to him and the waterfall up the hill is loud enough to cover any noise he made. “He only shifted here to attack her, he’s been watching her for what smells like weeks.” “Rory, I can follow his human scent. Now that I know he wasn’t Maverick until he got here I can back track where he came from.” “I don’t know Harmony what if we are walking into a trap. Kanaan didn’t do this for no reason, someone had to of forced him and what if they are just waiting for someone else to come along to manipulate?” “Okay you’re right. Let’s go get Pay and a couple of warriors-“ “NO! Gosh you’re worse than Jett. His human scent is heavy here and the trail leading up this hill is just as heavy. He’s been coming here for weeks, maybe months. It will take days for that scent to pass, we can follow it tomorrow. Right now we need to get back to the pack house. There’s things we need to do to help our family.” “Wow, find out your Luna and suddenly you’re miss bossy pants. Fine. But I will take control tomorrow and bring them out here to follow this trail if you don’t. Just know that. She’s my mom too.” “We will come back tomorrow, I promise. But we need to support our family right now.” Harmony sprinted back to the pack house when suddenly she smelled something, something she recognized. “MAVERICK!!” She growled. “Harmony I didn’t have anything to do with this. He told me what happened and I came here to come clean. I need you to listen to me this is big. They aren’t after the Luna, they’re after Rory.” “Maverick, continue.” I mindlinked him since Harmony was in no mood to listen. Harmony laid her head low to the ground and was in the position to pounce at a moments notice. He explained the memory Kanaan shared with him. This man, the Reaper, wanting to ruin my life and using Kanaan to do it, taking his sister as leverage. I knew there was more to this. “I know we will be executed for what we’ve done, what Kanaan has done. But I needed you to know that I never wanted to hurt her. He’s been shutting me out for quite some time for these meetings. I don’t think he even meant to share the memory with me, but the guilt and sadness consuming him caused him to bring his block down. Rory, this man isn’t going to stop. He said you’re the reason his only friend was killed. He’s not a wolf, I don’t know his kind but he isn’t a wolf. He is immortal and he has every intention of taking everything good in your life before he ends you.” I thought about everything he was saying in the back of Harmony’s mind. She could see he was being genuine but she was pissed his body did what he did to our mother. She never once left the stance she was in and was now circling him, growling and snarling. “Maverick, I’m going to grant you this one mercy. You are going to be exiled from the pack to live your life as a rogue, but Kanaan must forever live in the back of your mind. There is a sedative that the hospital makes that will make and keep him weak so that you may do so. But be warned if you show your face here again I cannot promise your life will be spared as it is right now.” “Yes Alpha Daughter, I will leave and never come back. I am grateful for you sparing my life. I will forever be indebted to you if you ever need me. I’m sorry Harmony. I never wanted this, I never wanted to hurt my pack. I hope you see that.” She growled and started to lunge at him when I took control, “AURORA!” “We are sparing his life. You will not attack him.” I shifted back to my human form and approached Maverick. He bowed his head in submission as I placed my hand on his head. “Let me get that sedative, stay here and don’t be seen.” I quickly dressed from some clothes behind the flower bed at the pack house doors. As I turned around to go to the hospital, my biggest fear flashed in front of me. “Charlie.” I whispered shakily. “I never expected you to let the little worm live after killing your mom, I guess that’s what happens when someone as weak as you is a leader. ” He stared at Maverick and I saw him start gasping for breath until he fell over lifeless. He killed him with a look. “What are you?” “Oh dear Rory that is for me to know and you to find out. Good bye now, but know I’ll be back for you.” And just as I blinked he disappeared. I started freaking out, hyperventilating in my panic when I started to feel an even sharper pain. It was coming from my chest like someone is...”NO!” I ran as fast as I could to the hospital running into her room, pushing the doctors and nurses out of my way. “Mommy...” I muttered as everyone stood staring at her body. I scooped her whole torso in my arms bringing her to my chest. “Please Goddess don’t take her. I need her. She’s my mom. You took my first. Please....” I started to wail as the tears came uncontrollably. Then I felt something. Her arm it started to wrap around me. “Mom...” I looked down at her, “I’m here baby, I’m not going anywhere,”she said weakly. I smiled and continued crying, this time tears of pure joy. She was going to be okay. “Thank you, Goddess.” I said softly. “Honey, she didn’t heal me,” I looked at her confused, “you did.” What did she say?
