Chapter 6
Moving On
“Why do you have to run after that witch and beg her? Don't tell me you're afraid of her already.” Grey questioned Cynthia as she came back, looking sorry.
“Believe me, she's just an empty talking drum. She can do nothing.” He added.
After a long gaze, Cynthia nodded her head in agreement with his statements.
“I know, but you can never underestimate the words of an angry woman, especially when it has to do with her marriage.” Cynthia's mind was overpowered by fear.
Grey drew her closer, placing one hand on her belly and the other around her waist. He gave her a passionate kiss on the forehead.
“You're my world, honey, and I'll always be there for you and our children. Don't mind that ugly sister of yours; I know how to handle her.” He concluded, and Cynthia heaved a sigh of relief, but deep down in her mind, she's afraid for her unborn child.
She went into the ward to meet her mother, who was seated beside her dying father.
“I'm sorry, Daddy. I'm sorry that you had to pass through these pains because of me.” She said, staring at her father with her golden eyes, which had suddenly turned red because of fear.
Even though she was wayward at some point and got her father to reject her, throwing her out of his house, she still regards him as her father and feels some remorse about her actions.
“It was never your fault, my dear; his daughter caused it. I'm sure she wanted to kill him just like the way she killed her mother, but she started too late.” Mrs. Elena said.
“And don't forget you're on a mission in Grey's life. Ensure you play your game well. The clock is ticking, so once this old man lying down here who calls himself my husband is dead, we can fly out of the country immediately.” Her mother reminded her.
“Be strong, my dear. This is just a trial moment, but trust me, you'll overcome it. They must surely regret their actions.” Charia consoled Lila as she watched those tears gently swimming down her face.
“Second child? Charia, did you just hear that? I've been married for only three years, and my husband is already expecting a second child with someone. Charia, am I so bad and ugly that a man cannot focus his attention on me, even for only one year?” Lila whimpered. Besides, Cynthia never met Grey until she fell pregnant with Janell, so how is it possible that he is the father of her daughter?” Lila added.
“If that's the case, then probably they've been together since before you accommodated her at your home. But, c'mon, girl, I trust you to be smarter than this. How is it that those two have been having affairs behind your back but you never noticed? Charia asked.
“I should have known since I had my fourth miscarriage, but I had so much trust in Grey that I was too dumb to see the clear signs, and I was also quick to believe that Cynthia was a changed person.” Lila answered.
Confused, Charia asked, “So you once had a miscarriage, and he still has the guts to call you barren?” Charia found it hard to believe that Lila had once been taken in, and yet they still accused her of barrenness.
“You've always been a hotcake, even when we were in high school. Most of our guys, if not all, had their eyes on you, and even some teachers. But thinking of how you were so unlucky to end up with this man is what pisses me off now.” Charia's facial expression can tell how much hatred she has developed for Grey already.
They were not done talking when they heard a loud knock at the door.
“Lila, are you expecting someone?
“Not at all. I've not disclosed this address to anyone yet. That's why I'm still wondering where exactly my father was heading before he had the accident.”
Charia went to the door and saw the person she never expected!
“Good evening, please. I'm here to see Lila.” The man said,.
“May I know who you are and why you're here?” Charia asked with a detestful look on her face, "Not because she doesn't know who he is, but the sight of him alone irritates her.”
“Alright, please, tell her that her ex-husband, Grey, is here to see her.”
“Could it be that he has finally realized his mistake and is here to make things work? No, his countenance doesn't tell of someone who is sorry.” Charia thought as she went in to inform Lila.
“He's here to see you. I wanted to tell him that you don't reside here, but I think it is best if you two have a word.”
“I know her foolishness would allow her to believe me when I say I'm sorry. Besides, the Lila I know cannot see this handsomeness and still says, ‘No’. Ha, Lila, you think you're smart, but you don't know who you're dealing with. We shall see who wins at the end." Drenched in thoughts, Grey smirked as he waited patiently at the door.
“Have you signed the papers?” Leaning towards the door and extending her hands to get the papers from him, Lila asked immediately. She set her eyes on him, not even a greeting at first sight.
Focusing his captivating blue eyes on her, just like he always does to get her attention, he asked, “Lila, are you sure you're ready to dance according to the tone of the music you're about to play? Because I feel pity for you, if you think going about this divorce the wild way is the solution you need.”
“Remember, I offered you this divorce with great compensation, but since you're not willing to accept my offer, maybe you'll be willing to stand in court and defend yourself when I say that you deliberately killed all four precious children I planted in your womb. So, think twice before you make any stupid demands.” He added.
Lila laughed out loud, a pure mockery laugh.
“Oh, Grey, I thought you're a tough and strong man; I never knew that the black and white I gave you could humble you to this extent.”
“Well, if you think you can manipulate me with all these cheap threats, then you have lost it already. I'm only giving you the grace of today to agree to those conditions, or else be ready to finish what you have started, because this Lila you're seeing now is completely different from that soft Lila you knew back then. Don't forget that you'll also explain to the court how those children were conceived. Out of love or r**e? And don't be too quick to forget that all those miscarriages were caused by your cruelty towards me.” She added.
