Chapter 7
Flashback
Ten years ago, driven with excitement and joy at securing admission to the university and running to share the good news with her father, poor Lila saw herself on the ground, lying helpless, as she got hit by a speeding vehicle.
“Hey, are you okay? I'm sorry, my dear.” She heard the consoling voice of a man from behind, trying to lift her up.
“Thank you so much, sir. I'm fine. I'll just walk carefully down the street, Lila replied.
“Com'on, I can walk you home if you want. Besides, I'm Grey Shun, also a newly admitted student.” He extended his hands for a handshake with Lila.
Lila became nervous, feeling shy to look at his face. How lucky was she to have attracted the compassion of such a handsome man? Yes, Grey is the pure definition of handsomeness. It is hard for a group of four girls to see him, and three will not have an instant desire for him.
Since the death of her mother, a great gap has been created between Lila and love. Her father was so affected by the loss of his wife that he even forgot he had a small daughter to take care of, someone he was supposed to channel all his love and affection to, so she would not feel her mother's absence, but he failed.
Lila saw it as a big opportunity to be friends with one of the most handsome guys in college and never wanted to waste it.
“Ok, if you insist.”
They both walked down the road to her house together, engaging themselves in conversations that helped them get to know each other better.
“Grey, what are your plans with that girl?” His mother asked.
“M…m…mummy, I.” Hearing that unexpected question pop out of his mother's mouth made him stammer.
“Grey, I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about. When did you plan to make her yours?”
Confused and surprised, “I don't have any plans of marriage with her, mummy. We're just friends.” Grey answered.
“Friends? You need to make the relationship deeper than that. Prove love to her and make sure you please her by all means to cut any form of rejection.” Mrs. Shun advised.
“But, mummy, I thought you hated seeing me with her; then why the sudden change of mind from hatred to love? Is there something I need to know?” Grey still found it unacceptable to believe that his mother, who once released the dogs on Lila out of hatred when she came looking for him at home, has suddenly developed a strong love for her, even wanting to have her as a daughter-in-law.
That cold evening, while stretching herself on the sofa after a long day at work, Lila heard a knock on her door. She slouched to the door to see who was there.
“You have a visitor waiting for you downstairs.” Her stepmother said.
“Me, visitor? Who could that be? But I wasn't expecting anyone. I wonder how important these visitors could be that my stepmother would walk up to my room to call me by herself.” Lila's mind was preoccupied with shock.
Of course she has to be surprised, because who could believe that her stepmother, who hates to see her having any visitors, even going as far as telling anyone who visits her that she's not home even when she's home, is now the one ascending the stairs just to inform her of the presence of her visitor?
“Alright, thank you, ma. I'll be with the person in a short while.” Lila replied to her stepmother.
As she climbedAs she climbed the stairs, Lila couldn't believe the view of the person she was seeing.
“I know this visitor is not here for good, because Ma’am Elena can never call me for anything good,” she thought.
“Good evening, ma. I'm sorry for keeping you waiting. I had to freshen up fast.” Lila explained as she greeted.
“No offense is taken, my dear. Sorry, I came uninformed. But thank God, I was able to see you. Lila, we need to talk.” Mrs. Shun said it with a smile.
Upon hearing that, Ma'am Elena quietly excused them to have some privacy.
All the behavior exhibited by her stepmother was really a surprise to her. She wondered why a person who never allowed her to have privacy with her maternal relatives whenever they visited was now acting all nice.
“Alright ma.” Lila nodded.
“Firstly, Lila, I'm here to say that I'm really sorry for treating you badly. Please don't let my arrogance deter the love you share with my son. You can now come to the house anytime you want and stay as long as you want. Once more, thank you for choosing to give my son your heart.” Mrs. Shun opened her arms wide and gave Lila a warm hug before she left.
“Oh, finally, the storm is over!” Lila told herself, heaving a sigh of relief as she marched back to her room.
Lila and Grey's relationship grew stronger with the support of both families. For the first time since she lost her mother, Lila felt loved by her stepmother.
That fateful day, eating the sumptuous meal prepared by Mrs. Shun, Lila ran to the kitchen to get water for Grey as he coughed profusely like one who had swallowed up a bone. She came back only to see the young gentleman with one knee on the ground, holding the shiny golden ring in his hands. He popped the question, “Lila Sims, will you marry me?”
Finally, the long-awaited day is here. Lila Sims, with a heart full of joy, extended her fingers to have the ring of the one man she had ever truly loved.
“Lila, Grey told me that you're the one delaying the wedding due to the nature of your job. Please, my dear, Grey is my only son, and the Shuns need an heir. For my sake, can you go on with the wedding in the next two months?” Mrs. Shun pleaded.
