Chapter 9
Little Witch
Grey was confused at how things were just turning around within seconds. “Did I do wrong by marrying Lila?” He questioned himself.
“And if at all you're interested in the explanation, do well by calling that little witch of a wife to come down as well.” The voice added.
“Mum, I never knew you were awake. I thought you were still sleeping. Sorry, mom, how're you feeling now?” Grey asked, stepping forward to hold his mother's hands as she struggled to bring herself to the living room.
“I'm sorry, I was in a business meeting with our foreign clients when Ann informed me.
of your predicament, so I had to tell my wife to rush down to the hospital immediately to check on you.”
“Grey, you know why I'm out here. I'm not here to answer your greetings or tell you how I feel now. I heard you demanding an explanation from Ann, so I think it would be best if you could get the attention of the subject in question. Mrs. Shun replied.
“Mum, where is all this coming from? We were all fine in the morning before everyone left for work, and in just less than twenty-four hours, now we're all seeing each other as cats and rats?” Grey shouted in disgust at his mother's words.
He went up and came down with his wife to the living room. He sat beside her, locking her palms with his.
“Oh, finally, the witch is here.” Ann sneered at Lila.
“I knew it; that's why I've always hated you since before my son started courting you, but he won't listen. Now, you listen to me; if you think you can kill me just as you kill your mother, then you have just started an endless mission that can possibly lead to your disappearance.” Said Mrs. Shun.
Lila's face was filled with silence and shock.
“What exactly has she done to deserve all these statements? How can the same woman who pleaded with her to marry her son, even when she was not ready, start telling her such words just a day after her wedding?” She thought to herself.
“Are you still pretending you don't know what you did? You see that food poison you gave my mother to eat in the morning; you must eat that food tonight!” Ann retorted.
“Poison?”
Lila and Grey shouted coincidentally.
“Oh, you're surprised? Of course, I expected you to put on a little show of surprise. So, can you tell your husband here that you planned on killing his mother by poisoning her breakfast?” Ann emphasize
“What! Lila, How could you do that?” Grey jerks up from the couch, panicking; if not for the thought that he just got married to her a day ago, nothing would have stopped him from plunging her jaws with his fist.
“I can't believe that I just got married to a murderer!” He shouted.
“I don't know what they're talking about!” Tears were rolling down her eyes as she tried to defend herself.
“But if I prepared the same breakfast for everyone and the maid was there with me during the whole process, then how come she's the only one affected if I actually poisoned the food?” Lila cried.
“In fact, today has marked the end of your job at that company. First thing tomorrow morning, you'll go and drop off your resignation letter and come back home. I hate nonsense!” Grey scolded her and left for their bedroom.
“Ma’am, please, you and I know that I didn't poison that food. So please, can you admit the truth about the doctor's report?”
“I believe that you'll not be happy sitting down to see your son's just-concluded marriage crashing down in a day because of lies.” Lila whimpered and stood up quietly, heading up to her room.
Immediately after she left the living room, Ann and her mother started jubilating.
“This is just the beginning; let's see how well she can stand the fight," they said.
“Grey, seriously, you're unbelievable! To think that you'll believe your mother and sister over your wife without any doubt is really devastating.” Lila lamented as she entered their bedroom.
“Now I see why my mother hated you from the beginning, saying that you are nothing close to a good wife material! What I expected from you was an apology, but here you are, blabbing nonsense. You killed your mother because you wanted to live a motherless life, but as for me, I love and I need my mother to be alive.” He pushed her to the ground and left the room.
Lila's world was turned upside down.
She thought for a while about how to handle the situation, but couldn't place her hands on any better options. “Should she run to her family? Her stepmother would make that house a living hell for her. And too bad, she doesn't have any close friends at work. The only person she has always kept as a friend and should be able to defend her was her husband, with whom they've been together for seven years, but now he's also part of those trying to make her life miserable. Divorce would be the last option for her to consider. “No, since I was small, my mother has always told me that marriage is not a bed of roses. I'll try and make sure that I don't let this little temptation weigh me down.” Lila thought.
Lila wept bitterly as she wrote her resignation letter. She had always wanted to be a journalist since her childhood. Her love for that career was the genesis of her hard work until the day she finally made it. Now, she's to make a choice between her marriage and career.
Remembering the many times her late mother sacrificed her own happiness for the family, Lila resolved to quit the job and prioritize her family.
“Honey, I promise to always be careful when I'm preparing breakfast or any other food. Please, just give me this one last chance and let me continue with my work," she pleaded with her husband in the early hours of the morning.
“I know you're a career woman, but my love, please, I also need you to do me the favor of quitting that job. It takes a lot of your time, and I would not want anything to stress my wife. Besides, my earnings are enough to take care of us for now,” he replied, consoling her with a warm hug and kiss.
Becoming a full-time housewife was not an easy task for Lila. She has to contend with her mother-in-law controlling the activities in her kitchen. She was gradually losing herself as she no longer had anything to make her dress nice to go public again.
“Look at her, useless woman. Just sitting to finish my son's money and to eat everything you lay your hands upon in the house," Mrs. Shun said as she entered the kitchen and found Lila preparing some dishes. These words were sung into Lila's ear every day like a national anthem.
“In fact, excuse me to prepare my food by myself before you poison me again.” Mrs. Shun went forward, turned off the gas Lila was using, and brought down her half-cooked food and poured it on the floor.
“You can come and eat your poison if you still want to, but one thing is for sure: from today on, you're banned from cooking for anybody in this house, including your husband. You little witch!” She added.
“Ma’am, please, I can endure anything, but you see what you just said now? I'm losing patience already, and I don't think I can tolerate you or anyone calling me a murderer again!” Lila warned her mother-in-law, as the insults and false accusations were getting out of hand.
“What? Did you just talk back to me?”
Mrs. Shun was amazed at how confident she was, making her move closer, and she raised her hand to slap Lila, but Lila grabbed her hands and squeezed them hard.
“Never in your entire miserable life should you attempt to raise your hands on me. If not for the respect I have for you, I would have beaten you blue-black by now. Mtcheew”. Lila's confident reaction was something her mother-in-law least expected.
“We shall see; I promise you, twenty-four hours will be too much for you to spend in this house. Let me just wait for Grey to come back." Mrs. Shun said as she returned to her room.
