Cathy POV
~~~~~~~
Only through sheer determination did I force Deidra to shift and leave her mate. She was adamant that we will go back one day. I’m not so certain however.
‘We will return one day. I may hate his human counterpart but I can’t stay away from my mate now. We’ll both go insane and go feral.’ I knew she was right but I chose to ignore that.
‘Yeah we’ll we will see how you feel when the betrayal pains start again’ I snorted. I instantly felt bad when she sorrowfully turned her back to me and hid herself. She hardly ever did that and I know she deeply sheltered me from the true agony of a mate betrayal. I knew she needed space so I let her have it.
I walked the lone streets of Wellsberry. It was the next town over from my old pack. I had grabbed the emergency pack I left myself with clothes, the little money I scrounged up, and faked documents. I was Anna now and I needed to look the part.
I stopped in mini mart and asked for their bathroom key. It was dark and smelled but I’d live. ‘Please Deidra, we have to change our appearance.’ I prayed in my head that she would listen and held my amulet with the person envisioned. As well as the smell.
She didn’t speak but when I opened my eyes I saw two brown ones staring back at me. Anna was tall, she had tanned skin and dark brown hair that hung straight past her tiny waist. Her face was one I modeled after a random girl in the pack. She was attractive enough. This was Anna and for now I had to be her.
I left that bathroom and didn’t look back. I had a new life now and it was time to start living it.
1 year later.
I crouched down in the woods. Always having to maintain posture I watched for anything that passed by my vision.
I saw him then- cruel dead eyes and pale white skin. He was feasting on someone. They looked already dead but I said a silent prayer that they might survive. I readied my arrow
Bang. He fell dead. I looked around confused by who took my prey. I jumped up from my hiding spot to peer into the woods and whoever dared to kill for me.
Alaric. I should’ve known. He had a smug face and he strolled over to me lazily. He smirked as he saw the anger flashing in my eyes.
“Anna, you’re really too slow. Maybe we could’ve saved that human if you hadn’t paused. Always overthinking”
“Better than you. At least I can think. All on my own” I watched as his face fell. He knew what he meant, he only followed daddy’s orders after all.
“Whatever we gotta go. Some wolves want to discuss with my father about some land. He asked us to help keep guard”
“You know your dad claims to be such a bad a** but I’ve never even seen him shoot a bird”
“You’d never want to see him in a fight and definitely never as his enemy, Anna.” He threw his arm around my shoulder which I wanted to shrug off but fought the urge. Deidra had left me after some time. I couldn’t stand the idea of going back to the monster and after one night of feeling the betrayal pains she stopped talking. Every once in a while- like now I would feel a bit of her spark but it was gone momentarily after. I was at a bit of a loss when she left. I was basically human after all. But it didn’t take long for me to find them.
The hunters. I didn’t know why they took pity on a broke human girl but they did. They trained me to be as strong as any supe even without Deidra. Although I’d never mention my wolf sometimes I thought Titan knew. He never commented however.
“Whatever let’s just get in there. It’s a pack they wouldn’t try to attack unless they have some random rogues out there attacking them.” It was pathetic to ask for our help but we had loyalty to certain supes and if we ever needed them they would be around for us too. That was a big if however.
Alaric and I rarely worked with any of the other hunters. Titan originally paired me with his son so I would be strong. It took a long time but eventually I was able to beat him in hand to hand combat. And then we were on the same level with shooting. We worked best as a team and getting others involved was just too much work.
I knew he wanted me. Problem was besides the fact I already had a mate. I felt dread everytime he would touch me. It permitted the air. I figured it was Deidra pushing back against me for being disloyal but I eventually learned what Alaric was like. He was s******c. He wanted to beat me and make me lower than him. When I first started I saw him do it to another woman albeit I didn’t know what was going on at the time I realized later on. I helped her escape from the hunters. She’s long gone now and Alaric never learned of my involvement. I would do the same for any new woman he tried with but he wanted me and for the last 8 months he hasn’t shown interest in anyone. Well except me. I was good at throwing off his advances. I had tried to flirt with another to get him off my tail but then I heard he beat the hunter to a b****y pulp. No one would so much as throw me a glance after that.
“Nichola said they’re here. We should hurry to dads office before they come in” he whispered in my ear. He mistook my goosebumps for coldness and draped his jacket on me. It wasn’t coldness I was feeling though. Just pure disgust. I plastered a smile on however and followed him to Titans office.
We stood near the doors. We remained solemn and alert but in the end these meetings always were a bore. I never got to fight anyone. We both heard the doors open and I froze. ‘
‘He’s back’ I heard the tiny voice in my head chime in. Yes how unfortunate.
