Chapter one
Mildred sat up and sighed. She checked her clock and it was
just 4:30am. She had found it difficult to sleep and here she
was awake even before she was supposed to be. She knew
the cause of her sleeplessness had a face and an arrogant
attitude. She was finding it difficult to sleep because she
was to meet her arrogant husband today to finalize their
divorce then she can finally be able to breathe. She laid
down back and thought of the series of events that had led
to her very short marriage to Logan. They had met in her
one-time vacation at a hotel in London which she had
booked with her five long years savings. He had been
charming, captivating her and gaining her audience and
before she knew it one thing had led to another and they
had unprotected s*x. Logan had proposed the next
morning and God knows what had possessed her into
accepting. It had all felt like one of those romance novels to
her. They had got married that day and that had been the
beginning of her hell. A month later he had asked for a
divorce when it was confirmed that she wasn’t pregnant. But
she feels he had asked for the divorce when he had found
out that she was at the lowest point in status socially. She
had debts pilling up for her every day and she barely earned
enough to pay them off. Literally putting in his terms, shewas destitute. She sighed again and sat back up. She had to
do something else since she knew she won’t be able to get
back to sleep. She washed her face and changed from her
night gown into her jogging suit. She had to run off the heat
so she could face him for the last time.
Logan checked his watch for the fourth time. She was an
hour late. He knew she was being late on purpose, to upset
him. He had clearly told her the time for the appointment.
His legal team and the legal representative she had been
able to afford were already present and he wondered what
was possibly keeping her. In reality he was the busy one
here but he had cleared his schedule so he could rescue
himself from the trapped he had created in the first place.
He closed his eyes and tried to remain calm then he stood
up and began to pace the room. He wasn’t going to call her.
After today, she was going to remain one of his
embarrassing pasts. The door opened and he turned
towards it to see the object of his anger rushed in looking
so disorganized. Her straight auburn hair was all over her
face and her cream-colored blouse was handing towards
her left hand and she was out of breath.
“Were you in an accident? Why do you look that way and
why in God’s name are you late?” he enquired rudely.“I wasn’t in an accident,” she replied smoothing her hair and
adjusting her blouse. “There was heavy traffic that’s why I’m
late and I look this way because I ran up the stairs,” she
explained. Logan looked at her in disbelief. He had never
understood her. Why would she choose to use the stairs
instead of the elevator.
“What happened to the elevator? You desperately wanted
to be late.” Mildred eyed him and clenched her fists. She so
badly wanted to hit him but she didn’t have the finance to
pay for a lawyer should he sue her and she knew he would.
She took in a long breath and released it in a bid to calm
herself.
“The elevator was full,” she told him and made for her seat.
“I’m sorry I’m late.”
“Let’s just get this done with. I have an appointment,” he
said and sat down back. The legal team got into action, they
signed some papers and within few minutes Mildred was
finally free. She was no longer married to the arrogant man
sitting opposite her. She had asked for nothing from him
insisting she had not married him for his money. The legal
team packed up and left the room leaving the both of them.“We were never married he said at last. I don’t want to hear
word of this sham we had for two months from anywhere
or I will make sure you regret you ever knew me.”
“You don’t have to threaten me, Logan. I’ve never met you
and I never knew you. That’s preferable for me.” She stood
up and walked to the door then she paused and turned
back to him. “You should know, the world doesn’t revolve
around only you. There are other people in it,” she told him
and walked out. Logan laughed as he picked up his phone.
She said that yet she still wore the ring he had given to her.
She had requested for a simple wedding band at that time.
He called her bodyguard who she didn’t know she had and
instructed him to follow her. He was going to keep an eye
on her for the mean time. He just didn’t know why but he
didn’t fully trust her. She had asked for nothing from him.
Nothing at all even though she knew he had billions. That
alone was suspicious. He had paid off a lot of gold diggers
like her in the past so her asking for nothing was beyond
weird. He had to keep an eye on her and the moment she
approaches the media or anyone from the media approach
her then she would rue the day she hatched up the plan to
deceive him.Mildred left the building and walked down the part to the
subway. She was still boiling up at his silly threat. Did he
thing the marriage they had was a happy? His arrogance
was going to be the death of him that she was sure of. She
stopped and tried to rethink her step. She had nothing to
do at home should she go home and she just didn’t want
to go home yet. She had just been released from hell and
she felt she had to celebrate. She took out her phone and
dialed her best friend’s call line. Betty had been the only
person she had told about her brief marriage and the
divorce. Betty was the only soul who she had told the
identity of her husband. The phone rang and someone
picked up the receiver.
“Hi Betty, are you free today?” she spoke into the receiver.
“Not really,” came the voice from the other end. “Is there
anything you want from me Middy?”
“I got free today, Bet. I got free today.”
“Oh dear! I forgot that today was D-day. Don’t worry I’ve
got you buddy. Do you want to hit the club tonight? It’s
been long we went together,” Betty asked and Mildred
knew she was trying to liven her mood.
“Sounds good.” “Let’s go celebrate you getting free from that jerk who
thinks the world revolves around him. Drinks on me.”
“Thanks buddy. See you.”
