The cell was cold, dark and stinky. It was poorly ventilated. There were two more men locked up with him, he had found them there. Dycon had been there the whole day, and he was afraid of what was coming.
He could recall being separated from his wife the moment Gigi's body was found. Then, when more officers showed up, they were transported in different squad cars.
It's been hours now, Christie was in the female sale at the far end of the lobby.
"I wonder how she's holding up." He thought, the whole thing had turned into a hot mess, because of a misunderstanding.
"Mr. Bele, your lawyer is here." A guard called as he unlocked the cell.
Dycon knew it was unmistakably one hired by Christie's God father, which made him even more terrified.
The officer led him to a room where he found a slender dark man in a suit waiting.
"Thank you officer, give my client and I some privacy."
"Sit down, Mr. Bele," he said as the officer walked out, locking the door after him.
Dycon sat opposite him, there was a notepad and a pen on the steel table.
"My name is David Nshinka, I'm your attorney."
"How is my wife?" Dycon asked.
"Mrs. Bele will be alright, she's speaking with her attorney right now," Mr. Nshinka replied.
"Mr. Bele, you need to tell me everything that happened, exactly how it happened."
"Alright." Dycon responded.
"And I know I don't have to remind you of the importance of honesty here, Mr. Shilanga sends his luck."
"I'll tell you everything," Dycon assured.
"All this happened because… Because I was unfaithful last year, I cheated on Christie."
"I cheated on her with her friend Lydia, the deceased."
"It only happened once and I regretted it instantly."
"I felt terrible about it and throughout the year, I have been trying to find a way to tell Christie."
"Lydia, on the other hand, didn't want Christie to know, and she wanted us to continue the affair. She became obsessed with me."
"Yesterday, she called me to her apartment to privately talk it out and put everything to bed. When I got there, she started to seduce me; apparently she lured me there for s****l plans."
"Christie walked in on us, Lydia's arms wrapped around my neck, I don't know how she knew."
"Then what happened?" Mr. Nshinka asked.
"A fight broke out between them. I tried to break it off, but I was shoved away, it got violent and Lydia was shoved, she slipped and hit her head on the corner of the glass table, it broke."
"It all happened so fast, I saw a fragment of glass sticking out the back of her head and just like that, she was gone."
Mr. Nshinka was taking notes, he seemed unaffected by the tragic narration.
"Then what happened?" he asked.
"I knew instantly that no one would believe us. It was an accident, a terrible accident. Christie's discovery of the old affair would be seen as a motive."
"So we decided to burry the body. I went looking for tools but the streets were so crowded, and it was late at night, I failed."
"When I returned to the apartment, we decided we'd hide it in the ceiling."
"Whose suggestion was that?" he asked.
"Mine," Dycon replied.
"We wrapped her in a sheet, and started dragging her. That's when the officers appeared."
There was silence, only the sound of Mr. Nshinka's ball pen scribbling on the notepad could be heard.
"Alright, here's what's going to happen." He started staring straight at Dycon,
"You're going to tell inspectors that you met with Gigi, you argued, things escalated, and a scuffle turned into a tragedy."
"Your wife walked in and found you standing over Gigi's body, of course in shock, because you didn't mean to shove her."
"Your wife, out of shock and fear, rushes to help you. You suggest hiding the body and convincing her it's the best way."
Dycon thought for a bit.
"So basically, take the fall?" he said.
"Basically, yes." Mr. Nshinka replied curtly.
"Mr. Shilanga will make sure everything goes well for you," he assured as he got up.
"Wait, what if Christie says something different?" Dycon asked.
"She won't, her attorney is making sure of that," Mr. Nshinka replied.
He paused at the door and looked at Dycon one more time.
"There's something your wife hasn't told you yet. Yesterday she went to see a doctor."
"What! Is she alright?" Dycon asked with concern.
"She's pregnant." Mr. Nshinka replied and walked out.
