Chapter One
A hot and loud night it was in the Hut. The Wanderers were playing Kabwe Warriors on the big screen. It was one to Nill. The Wanderers were leading. There was mayhem in The Hut, men and women dressed in green and white were haywire, a group of four were playing a score predicting game, where a player would guess if the striker countering would score the ball or not. If such a player's prediction happens to be wrong, they would take a shot from the bottle of Grey Goose.
They called the game 'Win or Goose'.
Sankudu was on his tippy-toes on one of the pool tables, dancing his usual Sankudu dance, his face painted white and green. There was a man sprawled out on the floor no one seemed to pay any attention to, they'd just hopped over him. He was out cold.
With the blue lights beaming everywhere, the area where the man lay looking lifeless gave an impression of how a crime scene looks when they use UV light to expose some evidence.
In the midst of all the confusion, Dycon sat in the far-left corner, alone, facing the big screen but oblivious to his environment, he was staring down into nothingness with three bottles of his favorite 'Bayab Classic', one of which was empty. The Hut had started ordering the 'Bayab Classic Dry Gin' specifically for Dycon. It was the only thing he would drink, and he always paid good money for it.
He always told Tracy that he loved the citrusy and African spicy taste from its integration of Baobab fruit, Coriander, Rosemary and Coarse Salt. He seemed to know an awful lot about 'Bayab Classic Dry Gin'. He wore a peach three-piece suit with a stripped necktie loosened.
"You should take those to go if you're driving, sir," Stacy spoke from behind the counter.
"Right," Dycon replied, picking up his keys with his right hand and the two 'Bayab' bottles with his left as he started to open the door.
"Wait a minute? Where are your shoes?" Stacy asked in shock upon noticing he was barefooted.
"Home," Dycon replied with little regard and disappeared into the night.
Though the Mercedes S580 4Matic is designed for luxury, comfort and prestige, Dycon felt utterly uneasy. He thought the Gin would help calm his nerves but it didn't. He glanced at his Golden Richard Mille ultra lightweight on his left wrist. It was 11:23pm, he had been sitting in the car packed by the house for the past hour since he had driven from The Hut.
He sipped from his Bayab and sighed deeply.
“Here we go,” he whispered and opened his car door.
He staggered to the front door steps, treading carefully on the parquet deck. Facing the door, he hesitated for a moment then fondled with his keys until he found the right one for the front door lock and unlocked it and entered, locking the door behind him.
The house was in total silence, he walked down the passage over to the lounge and halted examining it, his black closed-laced Oxford shoes were scattered across with broken glass everywhere and toppled furniture as evidence of what transpired earlier.
“What took so long?” Christie spoke from across the room.
“I had to take a detour, how are you feeling now?” Dycon asked.
“I threw up a couple of times; did you get it?” she asked.
“No, along the way I realized it’d look suspicious to buy those supplies this late.”
“So what are we going to do now?”
Dycon sat next to her and sighed.
“Well, we cannot move her out; the streets are crowded.”
He handed a bottle of Bayab to Christie as he looked intently at a lifeless body of a dark lady sprawled out with her head in a puddle of blood.
“We’re going to have to put her in the ceiling, through the trap door.”
“Are you crazy?” Christie spoke.
“We don't have options love.”
“All we’ve been through, to this… I should’ve kept it together.” Christie broke down in sobs.
“I am sorry, but now is not the time, we can't stay here.”
“This too will pass,” Dycon assured.
“Will it?” Christie asked.
“Grab the legs love”.
....
Kolin never liked night patrols, they always made him nervous, especially with soccer fanatics running around.
"Three more streets then we circle back." He spoke.
"Don't worry, I'll take you back to your teddy bear in one piece lover boy." Jessica mocked.
"You'll find someone soon partner, then we'll see just how tough you'll be." Kolin shot back.
"Love is overrated fool." Jessica dismissed.
"Wait! Pull over."
"What?"
"I'm sure I saw something." Kolin assured.
"Oh! Wait! what are they doing?"
"I told you."
"Probably thieves."
....
The tasked proved more challenging than they anticipated, Christie was running out of breath.
"Dycon I'm tired." She said panting.
"I know dear, but we gotta keep moving."
"I need some rest please."
A beam of light that shot through the windows made them drop down for cover.
"Police! come out with your hands were we can see them."
There was silence in the apartment.
"If you don't come out, we're coming in!" Jessica shouted.
"Alright!" Dycon stood up with his hands raised.
"Relax, I am renting this place."
"Come out both of you!" Kolin called.
Christie stood as well, with her hands lifted, shaking and sweating.
"Let me get the lease for you." Dycon said moving to a nearby table.
"Open this door, slowly." Kolin instructed.
Dycon opened the door and handed the lease agreement to Kolin who examined it with his flashlight.
Jessica had her 45 pistol pointed at Dycon.
"Alright, this still doesn't explain why you're fidgeting around in the dark." Kolin asked and beamed at Christie.
"You're okay ma'am?"
"Yes, I am alright." Christie's face was pale, her voice was shaky and she was wiping her forehead with the back of her hand every minute.
"Why are you fidgeting around in the dark?" Jessica asked.
"You know how it is officers, trying to rekindle an old flame, just trying something different." Dycon forced a smile.
"Switch on the lights." Kolin instructed.
Dycon and Christie glances and she again wiped her forehead.
Jessica swiftly walked passed them through the entrance and flipped the light switch.
The officers were greeted by a chaotic mess; flipped chairs, broken glass disarrayed rags.
Kolin raised his gun at Dycon's chest.
"What the hell is going on here?"
Jessica walked around examining the scene.
"Moved back slowly, facing me." Kolin instructed them both.
The walked in and Kolin closed the door behind him.
"Please tell me this isn't what I think it is?"
Jessica asked pointing at a white rolled up sheet in the middle of the passage, something unmistakable was hidden inside.
