Chapter 1 Wallflower
-Abby-
"Sir, here are the files that need to be reviewed. The business plan is needed for tomorrow's presentation", I said while handing the files to my long-time boss, Cascade Montgomery. I have been the Administrative Assistant of "Cade" for five years now. I still remember when I first applied for this position.
-Flashback-
"Hey, check this job out at jobdoor.com. StreamLine Solutions is looking for an Administrative Assistant to the CEO. Girl, you gotta apply. You just graduated, it's perfect for you.", Genna said as she scanned through her ipad.
I was just listening to her while I was putting away the dishes.
" Oh hey, this company is familiar. OMG! The CEO is that god of all hotness Cascade Montgomery!". With Genna squealing, it got me curious. Genna has always been there for me through thick and thin. Genna is the sister I never had.
"But oh, I heard that he doesn't like to hire young women as they tend to flirt with him and get him in trouble", Genna continued.
Genna is now showing me her ipad, and so I got interested.
"Well, I could try. I'll wear my usual slacks and long blazers. Those are plain and boring. Not flirty at all, I am there for the job. To make money." At the age of 22, I never had serious relationships. I focused on finishing school. I hang out with the opposite s*x, maybe going for a bowling date or movie dates every now and then, but it never progressed to anything more.
"Yeah, and you always wear those huge eyeglasses that make you look like a nerd. You might have a chance, Babe!", Genna declared.
The next day, I sent my resume crossing my fingers hoping to get an interview.
That surprising moment happened two weeks later. I was so elated that I had to treat Genna to a Red Robbin Berry Floats while we talked about the attire I would wear in the interview.
At the Interview...
While waiting for me to be called in, I practiced in my mind the answer to the possible questions.
When I finally got called in, I wasn't surprised to see the CEO as I had already seen him in my research. I wore black slacks that were partnered with a long sleeved, white, buttoned-up collared blouse. I have always been an average looking gal. I never had any problems with how I look. I've always been a realist, a pragmatist at that. My 1-inch heel closed-toe shoe gave me a small bump to my height of 5'6. I put on light make-up to even out my little freckles to my skin tone, and put on a gloss on my lips to appear somewhat decent. If you look at the CEO, you'd be intimidated by those striking high jaws and deep-seated eyes, but I came prepared. I studied him and his company.
I was able to answer the questions with satisfaction because the nature of the job is right up my alley. I had a past internship with a start-up business and that gave me the edge. The panel consisted of the CEO, COO, and the retiring Administrative Assistant.
I shook their hands firmly after the interview, and felt relieved when I let myself out of that building.
I told Genna that I might hear from them in two weeks, but of course her friend was more interested in Mr. Montgomery, who is really a God in human flesh. That's how she describes him. I just rolled my eyes while Genna kept prodding at me about how the man speaks or if he smells good like I would know. I was sitting across from them all from the other end of the elongated table, so how would I know if the guy smells good? Like duh. It's not like I would obviously sniff him.
The great news arrived after two weeks as promised.
My first day with the company was good. I was told to report to Mrs. Melinda Winters. She was the older woman on the panel. She is retiring and I will be replacing her. She was told to train me for 3 months before she retires. We really got along well and showed me the ropes. Mr. Montgomery only talked to me for exactly 30 minutes that day to formally welcome me and provide his expectations. I worked with Melinda the entire time.
Three months went by and here I am still working for Cade. He's a fair boss. I get salary increases every year with some stipends on meals and transportation. I've always been good at what I do, so I can't remember instances where I get snapped at by him. My main goal is to help my Mom pay the loans on her little Mexican restaurant in Pasadena in Los Angeles, so I want to thrive in this company without any problems.
-End of Flashback-
"Thank you, Abby. You can just leave it there. Hey, were you able to send those flowers to Grace?", Cade asked, throwing a quick glance at me while on his laptop.
Grace is his long-time girlfriend of 2 years. She stops by often, so I was able to get to know her over time. She is the epitome of perfection of a woman. With a height of 5'8 and a model-like body, she is perfect for Cade's height of about 5'11. She has this heart-shaped face that glows like an angel when she smiles. True to her name, she exudes grace and candor in the way she speaks and moves. A pretty face of a woman and a striking feature of a man - they are the power couple in the business world. We wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Montgomery would pop the question anytime soon. At the age of 30, he is at the right age to get married because he had successfully taken on the reign of the empire when his father died when Cade was 22.
"Yes, sir. I've made sure that your note was in there", I answered.
"Thanks. It's Friday, any plans for the weekend?", he asked while I was cleaning up the coffee stand. This is a great job for me. My boss is fair and generous.
"I have to declutter my wardrobe before the spring ends.", I answered.
He made a quick glance at me, nodded and smiled.
"I see. Thanks for the work you did today, Abby."
I wrapped up what I was doing, said bye to Cade, and left for the day.
