In a world where the moon is broken, magic is dying, and only the strongest wolves survive, Elara has spent twenty years as the weapon everyone fears.

Born with the Ember—a volatile power forged from the fractured moon's dying heart—she has protected her struggling pack while enduring a lifetime of whispers, suspicion, and isolation. To the world, she is not a woman. She is a monster waiting to lose control.

Everything changes when fate reveals her mate.

Kai, the legendary Alpha of the Golden Crescent Pack, is the most powerful wolf alive... and the one destined to stand beside her.

Instead, before every Alpha and noble in the realm, he rejects her.

He calls her a weapon.

A threat.

A monster unworthy of becoming his Luna.

Humiliated but unbroken, Elara severs the sacred mate bond with her own hands. But the moment it snaps, the impossible happens.

The fractured moon cracks even further.

A terrifying force known as the Null is unleashed—a living darkness that devours magic, twists wolves into mindless beasts, and pushes the entire world toward extinction.

Now the Alpha who cast her aside has only one choice.

Find the woman he condemned.

Beg the monster he created.

And pray she hasn't become something far more dangerous than anyone imagined.

But the Elara he rejected no longer exists.

She has walked through the heart of the Null... survived where no one else could... and awakened a power capable of saving the world—or destroying what remains of it.

As kingdoms crumble, ancient secrets buried within the moon awaken, and forgotten enemies begin to stir, Elara must decide whether a world that feared her deserves to be saved at all.

Because some rejections don't just break hearts.

They awaken legends.

And when the moon finally reveals why it chose Elara... the truth will change the fate of every wolf forever.

What if the greatest monster was never Elara... but the secret hidden inside the fractured moon?

Chapter One: The Monster's Price
The Null's breath was cold against Elara's throat. She had been running for three days through the ash-choked forests of the southern territories, her lungs burning with each desperate gasp. The grey fog moved like a living thing behind her, devouring trees, stone, and the very color from the world. She could feel it reaching for her, hungry and patient. Her boots slammed against the cracked earth as she vaulted over a fallen oak. The bark crumbled to dust beneath her weight. Nothing solid remained here. Nothing real. The Null had already claimed this land, and she was just a ghost running through its grave. They're following me. They're always following me. Elara risked a glance over her shoulder. Through the swirling mist, she saw them—twisted shapes moving with jerky, unnatural grace. Once they had been wolves. Now they were something else. Their eyes glowed with that sickly grey light, and their jaws hung slack, dripping black saliva onto the dead earth. The Changed. She had watched the Null take her pack's strongest warriors. One moment they had been fighting beside her, loyal and fierce. The next, their eyes had gone hollow, and they had turned on her with teeth bared. She had been forced to— Don't think about it. Don't stop running. Her fingers brushed against the leather pouch at her hip. Inside, the Ember pulsed with weak, erratic warmth. It was dying. Just like everything else. "Elara!" The voice came from ahead, cutting through the fog like a blade. She knew that voice. She had known it for twenty years, had grown up hearing it call her name in fear and reverence in equal measure. "Garrick!" She pushed herself harder, her thighs screaming, her heart threatening to burst from her chest. "The Null is closing in! We need to—" She broke through the treeline and skidded to a halt. The Ashford Pack's last stronghold was gone. Where the stone fortress had stood, there was only rubble. The walls had been torn down, the gates ripped from their hinges like paper. Bodies lay scattered across the courtyard—wolves she had grown up with, trained with, bled beside. Their eyes were open and empty, but not with the grey glow of the Changed. They were just dead. Garrick stood at the center of the c*****e, his great white fur matted with blood. He was the oldest wolf in the pack, a grizzled warrior who had seen a hundred battles. But his eyes held a terror she had never seen before. "It happened so fast," he whispered. "The Null came from the sky. Like rain. Like... like the moon itself was bleeding." Elara's hand went to her throat. The scar from her mother's claws—given to her on the day her Ember had first manifested—throbbed with phantom pain. "Where is everyone?" she demanded. "The elders? The pups?" "Gone." Garrick's voice cracked. "They came for us, Elara. Not just the Changed. They came for the ones who still had the magic. The witches. The healers. They took them into the Null. We tried to stop them, but there were too many, and their power—" He shook his massive head. "It's like they don't feel pain anymore. They don't feel anything." A low growl rumbled behind them. Elara spun around, her Ember flaring to life in her palms. Three of the Changed stood at the edge of the clearing, their grey eyes fixed on her with terrible focus. "We need to go," she said. "Now." Garrick shifted into his human form, his body rippling and cracking as bones realigned. He was a tall, weathered man with silver-streaked hair and a face carved by grief. "There's nowhere left to go. The Null has already taken the southern territories. The northern passes are blocked by the Golden Crescent's forces. We're trapped." "Then we fight." "You can't win against them!" Garrick grabbed her shoulders, his grip fierce and desperate. "You've seen what happens when you use the Ember too much. It's killing you, Elara. Every time you call on that power, it takes a piece of your soul. How much do you have left?" She didn't answer. She couldn't. Because she knew exactly how much was left. Not enough. Never enough. One of the Changed lunged, its jaws gaping wide. Elara threw up a wall of flame, and the creature shrieked as it struck the barrier. But the fire was weak—so much weaker than it had been a week ago. The grey fog ate at the edges of her magic, consuming it like water eating away at stone. "Elara!" Garrick was running toward her, his body shifting back to wolf form. "I'm fine!" She threw another blast of flame, driving the Changed back. "Just get to the caves! I'll hold them off!" "Don't be a fool—" "I said GO!" He ran. She watched his white form disappear into the treeline, and then she turned to face the horde. There were more of them now. Dozens. Their grey eyes glowed in the fog like dying stars. They moved in perfect synchronization, a single mind controlling a thousand bodies. And then, through the mist, a figure stepped forward. It was a wolf, but it walked on two legs like a man. Its fur was patchy and grey, and its eyes burned with the same hollow light as the Changed. But there was something different about this one. Something that made Elara's blood run cold. "Elara of the Ashford Pack." The creature's voice was a chorus, a thousand whispers speaking in perfect unison. "You have something that belongs to us." Her hand went to the pouch at her hip. "Come and take it." The creature laughed, a sound like breaking glass. "We don't need to take it, little fire. You will give it to us willingly. Because the only way to stop the Null... is to embrace it." "Never." "Then watch your world burn." The creature raised its hand, and the grey fog surged forward like a wave. Elara threw up every ounce of magic she possessed, creating a wall of fire that stretched to the sky. But the Null was stronger. It pushed against her barrier, cracking it, shattering it. She felt the first tendrils of cold touch her skin, and she screamed. No. No, I won't let them take me. I won't become like them. The Ember pulsed against her hip, warm and desperate. It was the last piece of the moon's magic, the only weapon that could stop the Null. But she had been using it to fight, to survive, to protect. She had been using it wrong. Garrick's words echoed in her mind: It's killing you. Every time you call on that power, it takes a piece of your soul. But what if she gave it everything? What if she didn't just use the Ember's power... what if she became it? "Please," she whispered to the dying fragment of the moon. "Please help me save them." The Ember answered. It exploded from its pouch, enveloping her in a cocoon of golden light. The Null shrieked and pulled back, its grey tendrils burning away like paper. The Changed creatures howled in agony as the light washed over them. And Elara felt herself changing. Her body was on fire. Not with pain, but with transformation. She could feel her bones shifting, her skin stretching, her very soul expanding to contain the power that was pouring into her. She looked down at her hands. They were no longer flesh. They were pure, living flame. "No," she gasped. "No, I didn't mean—I just wanted to protect them—" The light grew brighter, hotter. She was becoming something else. Something the world had not seen in a thousand years. And then, as suddenly as it had begun, it stopped. Elara collapsed to her knees, gasping for breath. She was human again, her body intact, her Ember—if she could still call it that—thrumming in her chest like a second heartbeat. The Null was gone. The Changed were gone. The clearing was silent and still. But something was different. She looked up at the sky, and her heart seized in her chest. The moon. The fractured, broken moon that had hung in the sky for ten thousand years— It was bleeding. A crack had appeared in its surface, wider than any before. And from that crack, black liquid was dripping, falling to the earth like tears. "No," she breathed. "What have I done?" The ground shook beneath her. A roar echoed from the south, so loud it rattled her teeth. The Null was not gone. It was growing. Spreading. Consuming faster than ever. And in the distance, she could hear the Changed howling, their voices rising in triumph. This is what you wanted, isn't it? The thought came unbidden, cold and cutting. You wanted to save them. Instead, you doomed them all. Elara pressed her hands to her ears, trying to block out the sound. But it was inside her head now, whispering, laughing, calling her name. Monster. You've always been a monster. Now the world knows it too. The Golden Crescent Pack's fortress was the last bastion of civilization in the northern territories. It was a massive structure of white stone and silver metal, built into the side of a mountain that overlooked the frozen sea. Inside, the pack lived in luxury—warm fires, full bellies, and the comfort of knowing that they were the strongest wolves in the realm. Tonight, that comfort was gone. Alpha Kai stood at the window of his war room, staring out at the horizon. The Null's grey fog was visible even from here, a creeping stain on the edge of the world. It had been spreading for weeks now, devouring everything in its path. But that wasn't what worried him. It was the moon.
