ONE
The silence in the pack hung heavy in the pack hall. It was so harsh, as though I was buried alive in a coffin.
The pack members gathered to witness the most shameful event of the year. A worthless omega who wasn't fit to breathe the same air as the alpha had dared to accuse his son of breeding her.
I had always held on to the fantasy that, one day, I would stand proudly with my pack mates, and they'd celebrate me with real smiles and handshakes.
But my reality now is the opposite. The disgusted look on their faces made me feel like a crushed insect.
"Abbie," my pack alpha, Zander spoke, his bass voice ringing through the large space. Just like his son, he passed the 6ft4 bar and was blessed with looks that could melt hearts and had the charm of a lion.
“I'm giving you one final chance to come clean. Who is the father of the child in your belly?"
My poor heart stopped dead, and my throat compressed until it felt like it was going to burst. I couldn't say anything. The silence seemed to grow thicker by the minute until my ears began to ring.
Fabian, the alpha-in-waiting and my godforsaken mate stared at me with empty eyes, turning away from the wild call of my wolf reaching out to him.
He pretended that I was a stranger, it was so crazy that the same person denying any connection between us was the same person I spent time with, night after night of unspeakable pleasure in ways I'd never before experienced.
It was torture to see such a bored expression directed at me by my mate. Those same eyes once clouded with intense lust, now took on a cold glare. The voice that had cried out my name and filled me with his seed now denied me and our child.
"Out with it, you disgusting b***h!" Luna Maya, Fabian's mother, screamed at me from her high platform. Her face reddened with rage. "How dare you try to soil my son's reputation?"
"Control yourself, Maya," Alpha Zander warned his wife before turning to address me, his tone carefully measured. "Speak, now."
My eyes grew wet as tears threatened to spill over. I spotted my dad in the crowd. His eyes sank in shame, afraid of the punishment of this shameful act of mine.
"It's... it's Fabian," I stammered, my voice cracking. "I swear, I'm telling the truth."
My mate leapt from his seat and rushed towards me, but the alpha was quick to grab his arm before he could strike me.
"You do not raise a hand to a woman, you fool," Alpha Zander scolded his son. "If your name is at stake, the least you can do is try to make amends, not worsen the situation."
Fabian's eyes were as cold as the grave, exposing his guilt for all to see. Yet, my pack mates were all cowards, unwilling to face the consequences of crossing the alpha's family.
"Father," Fabian roared like a starving lion. "I refuse to sit and watch this dirty girl lie and accuse me when I have a surplus of better options at my disposal. Particularly not when my lovely Fianceé is carrying my child."
I blinked in shock. What fianceé was Fabian talking about?
Didn't he just confess to me a week ago that he would declare to his dad about our bond and damn all the consequences of mating an omega?
Even Alpha Zander looked uneasy, although I was already aware of my judgment. The Alpha was a fair leader with a good reputation, but everyone in the pack knew that Fabian was his weakness. The alpha was known for covering up his son's shitty character.
The alpha would rather pluck out his eye than witness his heir's reputation being damaged.
"Young girl, I don't believe you, and I'm sure that all members of the council share my mistrust. Does anyone object?" Alpha Zander announced.
"Not I," murmured the council members amongst themselves.
"As you can see, no one is on your side. If my wise council members can see through your lying, then I'm afraid your accusations hold no weight."
My father fell forward, his face flushing with fear. He was an ordinary maintenance worker in the alpha's household. What could he do to rescue me?
Nothing.
"Pardon me, Alpha Zander, I do not mean to be insulting but my daughter, Abbie, does not lie. “
"What are you implying?" The beta's wife and also my best friend's mom, a plump woman with layers of fat on her chin, accused him. "Are you suggesting that the alpha and his ruling council are lying?"
"Not at all," my father trembled, shocked that the woman was ready to condemn me. The same woman who treated me like her daughter.
I feared for my father's life, as I saw the alpha's brutal glare directed towards him.
My father knew me all too well; we only had each other after my mother died giving birth to me. I was three months shy of seventeen, and though my father had nothing, as per the alpha's words, I lived a private life because he provided for my every need—until Fabian came into my life.
Until the moon goddess played this cruel trick on me, by giving me the alpha's son as my mate. Until I was swept away by the pleasures of the bond.
"I refuse to sit here and be accused by you, Jacobs," Fabian declared, pointing a finger at my father.
“Abigail, you're a worthless pile of horse s**t. You mean nothing to me, and yes, the moon goddess may have given you to be my mate, but I never touched you. Because of this false accusation, I, Fabian Adams, reject you, Abigail Jandel, as my mate. Henceforth, I do not want to see you near my property or anything related to me.”
"Fabian, do not act too rashly," his father said to him.
While the alpha was speaking, I felt a sharp, piercing ache in my body. My wolf was burning against me, now that my mate had rejected me.
I had never suffered such scorching agony before; it ripped at my guts, causing me to tremble like an Aspen leaf and collapse to the ground.
Fabian also began to sweat, breathing heavily, but as an Alpha, he had a higher tolerance for pain than me.
"It is done," Fabian said. I raised my head with tears in my eyes and wiped away the blood from my mouth.
"Now that this accursed bond has been broken, I will summon my future daughter-in-law, Kate, to pass judgment on Abigail's fate since she has been the most impacted by this whole pregnancy ordeal," Luna declared.
Kate?
My heart began trembling. The only Kate I knew in this pack was my best friend and the beta's daughter.
"Please, Alpha," my father pleaded, prostrating before him. "Please take charge of the judgment yourself; I do not want to lose my only child."
The Alpha shrugged, giving my father an innocent look as if he did not know what he was doing.
"It is no longer in my hands, but do not worry; Kate is a nice, sweet young lady, and I believe her punishment for Abigail will not be severe."
When Kate came out, my sobs filled the room. The backstabbing stung more than any physical injury.
She was wearing a bright green dress and had long hair that hung down in loose curls that reached her waist. Unlike her mother, she was petite and beautiful and perfectly looked like a porcelain doll.
Despite knowing how much I loved Fabian, she took him away from me.
"Abigail, I have shown you nothing but kindness," she stated firmly, meeting my gaze with spite. "Yet, you chose to repay me by stealing my man. And for that, you deserve to face all the evils of this world."
I clutched at my father's leg, pleading for mercy.
"May the alpha live long. I'd have sentenced her to a lifetime in the dungeon, but as a fellow woman, I do not wish that fate upon anyone.”
My hands pressed together in a silent plea. I knew that Kate would never hurt me intentionally and maybe somehow there was hope.
"From this point on, Abigail, you are banished from the West Coast Pack. You are forbidden from associating with anyone here. Your rights as a pack member are revoked. If you disobey, you will face immediate death. “
The alpha rose from his seat. "I know we are all busy, and I don't want to waste any more time on this petty matter of a young girl who became enamoured with my son and is now trying to destroy his reputation. I support the decision of my daughter-in-law and it must be enforced immediately."
Kate snapped her fingers at the guards. “Take her away and throw her into the forest of doom. “
I screamed at the top of my lungs, pleading with anyone who would listen. Fabian and his wife walked past me, with Fabian wearing a smug smirk on his face.
“No! No, I beg you, Father, please don't let them take me away. I promise I will never mention this pregnancy again, and I won't ask anything from Fabian. I'll stay away from him for as long as I live.”
“Get her out of my sight.”
Fabian said and pulled Kate closer. “Make sure she doesn't escape your sight until she's out of the pack's borders.”
