Elara’s POV
I stare at the pregnancy test kits. I’m shaking as I try to make sense of what’s happening to me. Ember’s gonna freak out if she finds out I’m pregnant and she’ll be right to lash out at me. I haven’t been the best sister in the world and now I’m back in her life with a baby!
I’ve only spent two weeks here with the rest of the werewolves in this cabin and as much as they’ve been welcoming, adding a baby to the mix will change everything. I can’t help but wonder how Aiden will react too.
Ember interrupts my thoughts as she enters the cabin. I don’t have much time to hide the kits before her eyes land on them. The small smile on her face fades. “What’s that?”
I take a deep breath as my heart beats violently against my chest. This is it–the moment of truth. “I’m pregnant–”
“Wait, what?” Ember’s face turns pale like a ghost’s. “You’ve gotta be kidding me.”
My stomach twists with fear. I’m not even shocked Ember is acting this way after all she likes complaining about everything I do.
“It’s for that Lukas guy, right?” Ember’s brows pull in as she crosses her arms. “The guy who doesn’t even want you. Gosh, Elara, how can you be so stupid?”
My shoulders fall and I wish I can disappear away from Ember’s glare and hurtful words. “I’ll tell him–”
Ember laughs bitterly, her eyes glazing with annoyance and disappointment? I’m not even sure at this point. “And what’s gonna happen after that? You think he’s gonna open his arms to accept you?”
“I’m his mate–”
“And he rejected you. For f***s sake Elara when are you gonna do something right for once?”
The things coming out of Ember’s mouth are killing me. I grab all the test kits I’ve used and throw it in my bag and throw the bag over my shoulder.
“Fine! I made a mistake and I’m gonna fix it,” I shout. “You’ll see.”
“You’re running away again, right? How typical of you.”
Ember shouts after me as I step out of her room and slam the door shut. Other werewolves are going about their business, preparing for the night ahead. Some are sharpening their claws and teeth, others are practicing their fighting skills, and a few are cooking meat over a fire. They all stop and stare at me as I storm out of Ember’s room, their eyes full of curiosity and pity. I feel a surge of anger and embarrassment as I meet their gazes. I don’t belong here. I don’t want to be one of them.
I scurry away, trying to avoid them and their questions. I especially try to avoid Aiden, who is lifting weights in a corner of the yard. He is shirtless, showing off his muscular chest and arms. Aiden's dark hair is rough but it looks good on him and his gray eyes sparkle with concern.
"Elara... are you okay?"
I keep walking without saying anything then he grabs my hand sending a wave of emotion through me. Aiden and I have been talking a lot this week and it's hurtful to just go without saying anything.
"Are you leaving?"
I look at my feet. "I just need to sort some things out," I snatch my hand away from his and hurry past him, ignoring his calls. Aiden probably thinks I'm a b***h for not explaining anything to him but right now I need to see Lukas and tell him about this baby.
***
I walk towards the Silverthorn pack highrise building with a knot in my stomach. I know I have to face Lukas and tell him the truth, but I’m scared of his reaction. Will he accept me and our baby, or will he reject me and our bond again?
I see Thalia standing as she steps out of the building. Immediately she notices me, she glares at me as I get closer, her eyes full of hatred and contempt. She’s Lukas’s girlfriend, and she’s never liked me.
She blames me for manipulating the moon altar to steal Lukas from her, even though it's not my fault. She makes me feel anxious and apprehensive every time I see her. What will she do to me now especially if finds out I’m pregnant with Lukas’s child?
“If it isn’t the boyfriend thief?”
I brush past Thalia but she pulls me back still glaring at me. “Where do you think you're going?” She gives me a smile that doesn’t reach her eyes.
“I’m here to see Lukas.”
"See Lukas?" she repeats, mocking me. "What makes you think he wants to see you? You're nothing but a distraction, a mistake, a nuisance."
Thalia pushes me against the wall and I wince in pain. My heart pounds faster as I look into her cold eyes.
"He's my mate, Thalia," I say, trying to sound confident. "He loves me and I love him. We've got a bond that you can never break."
She laughs bitterly like a witch . "He's your mate? You're not his mate, you're his toy. Lukas' been playing with you and you are nothing but a s*x toy to him. I promise you that he only cares about me."
Thalia walks closer to me and traps me against the wall. I almost feel out of breath. She whispers in my ear, her breath hot and foul.
"I'm his true mate, his first love, his only choice."
"I'm pregnant, Thalia," I say and watch her wicked smile drop.
"That's a lie!"
"I'm not lying."
She pulls back and smiles wickedly at me. She reaches for my stomach, where my baby is growing inside me.
"If you think that having his child will change anything, think again. He doesn't want your child, he doesn't want your responsibility. He wants freedom, he wants fun, he wants me."
Thalia presses her claws into my skin which makes me gasp in pain.
"Elara... get rid of that bastard or I'll do it myself."
"I won't do that... at least not without telling Lukas--"
Thalia screams and slashes my face with her claws and I cry out loud from the pain.
"You're nothing to him,"Thalia heaves heavily. "Get the f**k out of here!"
