Chapter 1 - The Library - Orpheus
The library had been filling up slowly throughout the day with students cramming in their last minute exam preparation. The noise slowly increasing in volume as friends start gathering around the various tables, moving chairs around and catching up with one another. It starts to over stimulate my senses which I have managed to have focussed on her for the better part of the day.
I hadn’t intended on watching her for this long or at all, but the moment I caught her addictive scent of freshly fallen rain and lavender I was hooked and three weeks later I am back in the library watching her intently while she studies. She has had the same routine from what I had observed. She would find herself an empty table in the corner of the room, gather various books from the many dusty shelves on the side of the rooms and many levels. Then get her laptop out and her notebooks and be scribbling away for the rest of the time until her next class. I always had the intention to sit and do the same but I found her scent intoxicating, even from the opposite end of the room. As next in line to be the Alpha Wolf at Black Rock Haven Pack and in line to take over the Kingdom of the Ivory Hills after my father, I knew I needed to get my studies completed to an exceptional grade.
Ryan, my Beta in training, shortly returned to our table and with two cans of soda. He had his back to her while I returned my gaze to my notebook with a few scribblings regarding my next politics exam and possible answers to some practice test questions. Ryan had taken all the same lectures as me but I knew deep down it was chosen to support me in my role not necessarily a subject of his choosing. He had chosen his minor in history so at least I took some comfort he was enjoying part of his studies and didn’t feel like I had dictated his purpose in life. He returned to his textbook and notes he had left lying out and I knew he was contemplating saying something, but for some reason he held back. Most likely he wanted to respect his superior. I could view his thoughts at will, using one of my gifts, if I had chosen but with a loyal companion like I hated intruding so I shut off my mind and attempted to return to the notes I had made. I took a sip of soda, it’s coolness salving my dry throat which worsened in the heat of the library. The glass ceiling roof was excellent at letting in light, unfortunately you would also feel you are in a greenhouse as it could generate an enormous amount of humidity.
What felt like an entire age later, I felt her agitation prickling my skin like a heated needle running along my limbs. The noise level had started to become unbearable to my heightened senses and I could see Ryan’s discomfort. In previous days he had wanted us to return to our lodgings and study in peace but I had insisted we remain in the library using the excuse we could access more resources this way. Ryan had initially attempted to protest as we could access the majority via the student portal. But he respected his Alphas decision so had simply suffered with the overstimulation of the environment. She was fidgeting in her study chair and had started messing with her long, mahogany plait. Some whispers of hair falling away from her neat braid which went halfway down her back. She looked radiant today, opting for a simple floral summer dress. The shade enhancing her emerald coloured irises. Her long, dark eyelashes fluttering at increasing pace as her anxiety levels rose. She had started gathering her belongings and I mirrored her action as I realised we needed to head to our next lecture. I tucked my notes into my bag as I hoisted the strap onto my shoulder. Grabbed my can of soda, drained the remainder and returned the books I had borrowed to the librarians trolley. Then started to dart towards the exit, Ryan racing loyally behind as always. I remembered the empty can in my hand and raced towards the nearest bin and caught her intoxicating scent in my nostrils which distracted me completely as I bumped rather awkwardly and with into someone their books flying everywhere.
As I started gathering the various items spilled onto the tiled floor my eyes locked with the sparkling emerald eyes with grey specks. She seemed nervous and upset as she quickly gathered her things and I could sense she was attempting to compose herself. She stood up, straightened her dress, let her long plait hang over her shoulder and held out her hand while remaining silent. Her beautiful eyes never leaving mine. I stood their dumbfounded. I tried to gather my thoughts, what was she expecting of me? Her petite hand still held out firmly. Then it dawned on me as she was building in nerves, she wanted her b****y books back! I tried to thrust them into her hand, but grazed her wrist with my fingers and felt sparks igniting my body, leaving a tingling sensation where my body had finally touched hers. Magnus, my ivory wolf, wagging his tail eagerly and howling at the sensation. Then inside my head he was screaming “mate”. It’s a wolfs mission to find his mate to spend his eternity with and Magnus had found ours. I tried to introduce myself, but she looked surprised as a pink hue rushed across her neck and cheeks. Her pupils widening and her breath catching in her throat. She grabbed her belongings and darted out the exit. Magnus started growling in disappointment, his tail slumping between his hind legs. “You let her slip away” he growled at me. “No, I didn’t. She’s human, this involves treading lightly with her. She will not know of our world and we don’t want to scare her off. She isn’t like the other girls who thrust themselves at us. Couldn’t you tell she was nervous by the feeling of it. We must take it slowly and gain her trust” I said forcefully. Magnus sulked off to the back of my mind, knowing deep down I was right.
Me and Ryan headed towards the lecture hall for his final history lecture. I sat at the back adding to my research on different political models. But kept reliving the moment we touched. Part of my wanted to mind link with my mother, Queen Freya, to ask for her guidance as this could be the first human entering our family. But after pondering on it, I thought it needed to wait. I couldn’t bombard the poor girl just yet as security would then be increased on campus to keep her safe. That would never gain her trust in me. Plus I didn’t even know my mates name yet. “Yes you do” stirred Magnus. “You saw her notes”. That’s right I gasped. “Evelyn. Evelyn Morgan”. Even the sound of her name set my soul on fire. The very core of me building in heat that spread across my torso
