The news was playing on the tiny flat screen TV in the dinner and the topic of course was of the mysterious killings going on in town. Why the killer did it a mystery to the cops so was if they were linked, Isabel just smiled victorious searching for her Aunt.
The middle aged woman sat by the window booth looking out the window with her blue ocean eyes, impatiently waiting for her niece. Her short hair was hanging loosely above her shoulders.
If Isabel still had her blue eyes and dark hair, they would look like mother and daughter because she was the exact younger version of Yvette.
Her aunt tapped the table in impatience as she drunk from her cup, mostly like it was caffeine she hadn’t changed at a since.
“You should stop with the coffee at noon aunt it’s horrible and not food.” Isabel spoke taking a seat in front of her aunt with a wide smile.
Her aunt almost spilled her coffee firstly because she was startled and when Isabel told her she changed she didn’t expect so much change. Her aunt studied her niece with curious eyes for a while before speaking.
“You look like a whole different person, I hope you still enjoy your favourite meal.” her aunt spoke pointing to the dish that was in front of her.
She already order lunch for Isabel her favourite, chips dripped in sauce with chicken and a side salad. She didn’t notice it before but when she did she immediately dug in.
“My looks changed and maybe my behaviour but my taste in food could never change even if my life depended on it.” she shoved a couple of fries into her mouth.
Her aunt giggled fully agreeing with her words, she raised the girl as her own there was nothing she didn’t know about. Yet she couldn’t shake the feeling of uncertainty and worry off her shoulders.
Isabel noticed frown, reaching out to grab her hand she placed her hand in hers. “What’s bothering you?” she asked her aunt squeezing her hand.
Her aunt’s eyes landed on her arm surprised. “You have a tattoo!” she pulled her hand closer to her studying the tattoo her niece had. It had a large rose flower on her forearm, thrones surrounding it.
Isabel nodded, “Yes aunt. So what is bothering you.” she asked again looking her aunt in the eyes.
Her aunt sighed finally opening her mouth to speak. “This town isn’t safe anymore, so many deaths each day. I’m afraid for you’re life, I know you wanted to drop out you now fully have me approval.” she rumbled on, as she did she looked like she was hyper ventilating.
Isabel shushed her rubbing her thumb against her skin. “Calm down okay, they will find the person I don’t think they are just killing maybe it’s for a reason.” of course it was for a reason she was the killer.
Her aunt withdrew her hand from her niece a faint smile on her face she ran her fingers through her hair. “Even if they are criminals it doesn’t make it right.”
“I’m not a criminal so I’m not a target.” she said it with emphasis, even if she killed so many people illegally it didn’t make her a killer, she was just an unlicensed officer who actually got things done.
“Isabel..” her aunt spoke frustrated and tired.
“Yvette..” she mimicked her tone looking at her aunt once more. “I have been taking fighting classes if it makes you sleep well at night, I’m safe.” she was beyond safe her aunt had nothing to worry about, if only she saw that.
“I just think you should leave.” she stated again this time pleading, the woman would do anything to keep her safe it was her role as her mother figure.
Shoving chips in her mouth again Isabel licked her fingers covered in sauce. “Once I graduate.” she stated popping her pinky finger out her mouth.
The woman had on a deep frown, with a heavy heart she sighed in defeat. “Okay I have to respect your wishes.” Isabel smiled victorious then continued with her chips while her aunt finished her tea.
The TV was still on and the same topic was highlighted as they spoke with the chief. He sat comfortably looking at the host he spoke reassuring them it would soon stop, Isabel knew better.
Looking back at her niece she pointed to the screen on the wall. “They are so useless I swear sometimes. Their investigation has brought them no where.” she hissed and the only reason she did was because she worried for Isabel.
Locking down her fingers once more Isabel looked up to her aunt with a stern face. “They might have even caused the kills. They hardly help people in need, maybe they just tired of waiting and took matters into their own hands.”
They were the reason she did all this, the reason she changed the blood she shed everytime each day was on them for every single soul not heard, when they cried for help.
Her aunt partly agreed but then again it was so wrong in many levels. “It does not justify death.” she pointed out.
Isabel lowered her head looking to the floor. “I know.” she whispered under her breath. Her actions were good but they where not applicable.
Her mood instantly changed smiling at her aunt she spoke. “Let’s enjoy the time we have right now, shall we?” Yvette agreed with a firm nod even if she was worried sick, she did come to spend time with her niece.
Isabel sat at the dinner with her aunt catching up for once in weeks she felt like herself again, even if she wasn’t herself her aunt brought back the light of happiness fulfillment. Maybe just maybe some where deep within she still had her humanity, she could be her again one day.
Licking her fingers from the sauce she listen carefully with a actual genuine smile as her aunt spoke, none stop.
Sadly aunt had to get going which meant that little ping of happiness that came with her aunt would soon disappear.
With one last goodbye hug Isabel watched her aunt as she drove away in her car. The feeling of emptiness filled her again, her smile was now replaced with a frown.
Gripping both sides of her bag pack straps Isabel walked home observing her surrounding. Today she had a target, another kill. This time she would surely leave them a message to make it interesting, she skipped to her apartment with a mischievous smirk.
