Chapter 1: The Manor on Black Hill
The first thing Elena Hart noticed about Black Hill was the silence. Not the peaceful kind that settled over forests at dusk, nor the comforting hush that followed a summer rain. This silence was heavy. It clung to the air, swallowing every sound until even her footsteps seemed afraid to echo. The narrow road wound through a dying forest where ancient oak trees stretched twisted branches across the sky like skeletal fingers. Thick fog curled around their trunks, drifting lazily over the cracked stone path that led toward the hill's summit. Everyone in the nearby village believed the hill was cursed. As Elena passed the last cottage, she remembered the fearful faces of the people she'd spoken to that morning. "The manor has stood empty for decades," an elderly shopkeeper had warned. "It isn't empty," another woman had whispered. "He still lives there." "The Ashford heir." "Lucien." "They say anyone who gets close to him disappears." Elena had forced a smile and thanked them for their concern, though their words lingered in her mind with every step she took. She had nowhere else to go. After her parents died, life became an endless series of temporary jobs, rented rooms, and unanswered questions about what came next. She learned not to expect kindness. She learned not to stay in one place long enough to call it home. When a letter offering work as caretaker of Ashford Manor arrived without explanation, it felt less like an opportunity and more like fate. The salary was generous. The conditions were simple. Live in the manor. Maintain the estate. Ask no unnecessary questions. She had accepted without hesitation. Now, standing before the towering iron gates, she wondered if that had been a mistake. The gates groaned as she pushed them open. Beyond them stretched a long gravel driveway lined with overgrown hedges and dead roses whose blackened petals scattered across the ground whenever the wind blew. At the end of the path stood Ashford Manor. It was magnificent despite its decay. Towering stone walls reached toward the darkening sky. Hundreds of windows reflected the gathering storm. Vines climbed every surface, wrapping themselves around balconies and pillars as though nature itself wished to reclaim the house. Lightning flashed. For a brief second the manor looked alive. Elena tightened her grip on her suitcase. "You've survived worse," she whispered to herself. She climbed the worn stone steps and knocked three times. Silence. Then came the slow sound of locks turning. The enormous wooden door opened just enough for a man to stand within the narrow gap. He was taller than she expected. Broad shoulders. Dark clothing. Black hair that fell carelessly across his forehead. His gray eyes were impossible to read. They weren't cold. They were empty. "You shouldn't be here," he said. His voice was calm, deep, and strangely quiet. Elena swallowed. "I'm looking for Lucien Ashford." "I am Lucien." She offered him the letter. "I accepted the caretaker position." He glanced at the envelope without taking it. "I never hired anyone." Her heart sank. "But..." "The estate manager handles such matters." "So... should I leave?" Lucien looked beyond her toward the road disappearing into the forest. Rain had begun to fall. Heavy clouds swallowed the afternoon light until everything around them faded into shades of gray. "Where would you go?" he asked. Elena hesitated. She didn't have an answer. The landlord had rented her room to someone else. The little money she possessed barely covered food for another week. Returning to the village meant sleeping outside. Lucien seemed to understand without another word. He stepped aside. "One week." She blinked. "What?" "You may stay one week." "If you cause trouble..." "You'll leave." "I understand." He closed the door behind her with a heavy thud that echoed throughout the manor. Inside, the air smelled of cedarwood, old books, and rain. A massive chandelier hung from the ceiling, though only a handful of candles still burned. Portraits covered every wall. Generations of the Ashford family stared silently from elaborate golden frames. One portrait caught Elena's attention. A young boy with silver-gray eyes. Standing beside him was a smiling woman whose hand rested gently on his shoulder. The resemblance was unmistakable. Lucien noticed where she was looking. "My mother," he said quietly. His expression hardened. "The guest room is upstairs." He turned without another word and disappeared into the darkness of the west wing. Elena watched him until he vanished. There was something about him that didn't match the stories. He wasn't cruel. He wasn't threatening. He simply looked... Lonely. Outside, thunder rolled across Black Hill as rain lashed against the manor's windows. Deep within the ancient house, hidden behind locked doors and forgotten hallways, secrets waited in silence. And Elena had unknowingly stepped into the center of them. She could not have known that the lonely man who had opened the door would soon become the greatest mystery—and the greatest danger—of her life.
