Chapter 7

Alora "You know, the strongest smell a lycan detects after arousal is fear." Kylen breathed into my ear, which sent a jolt of electricity through me. Was the Lycan King under a spell? "Huh?" My mind was hazy. "Cat got your tongue?" He moved closer to me, even though none of our body parts touched, I couldn't help but feel the seating heat from his body. "I don't think this position is appropriate for a king and his subject, your majesty." I said formally, even though I wanted nothing more than to jump into his arms and never detach from him. "Call me Kylen." He said huskily. "But you're-" I started but got interrupted by Kylen. "It's an order which I don't think needs the slightest negotiation. Call me by my name whenever we're alone." Kylen retorted. "Kylen." I tested, calling him his name felt so right and wrong at the same time. He's the Lycan king whose synonym is ruthless. The corner of his mouth twitched slightly when he heard me say his name, almost as if he wanted to smile, maybe I was hallucinating. "More like that." "Uh… okay." I said, goosebumps had made themselves known on my skin due to how nervous I was. "What were you doing here anyways," Kylen inquired. "I was cleaning," I replied. Kylen's eyes almost darkened immediately, he looked furious. What do I do now? "I thought I placed you in the kitchen. Why then are you cleaning?" He asked. "Yes. We aren't doing anything in the kitchen currently and I thought of cleaning instead of loitering around. It'd lighten up the debt a little bit too." I explained. Little did I know that I had just tickled a blazing inferno. Kylen growled so loudly that I cowered like a fish in fear. "And you thought cleaning would help you escape this palace so fast?!" He roared angrily. His guards wanted to enter but he stopped them before they could open the door, saying it was a personal matter. Was the king insane? Why am so angry over me doing what he brought me here for? Just like that, flashbacks flashed through my head. *"You f*****g b***h! You ruined everything! You killed her, you killed your mother because you were too weak to have a wolf to notice the rogues that night! She protected you, a mutt, and died in the process." My father roared at me angrily, spittles flying around. I was just ten years old, yet, I remembered every day how I caused the death of my mother. If I had a wolf and sensed the danger, I might have had a force shift to fight against the rogues too. But no! Nothing showed. No signs of a wolf have been shown in me since I was a child.* Kylen's angry face mirrored my Dad's anytime he got so drunk without control and he saw my face, the replica of the woman he loved with his life then he got remembered of the cause of her death. "I apologize if I said anything wrong, your majesty." I begged, tears streaming down my face. Kylen inhaled sharply but I couldn't decipher the expression on his face since I was looking down. "Look at me, Alora," he commanded. I lifted up my head to look at his jaw, still refusing to look into his eyes. If I did, I wasn't sure I'd come out of the room alive. He looked so crazy and scared with his eyes almost blazing red when I told him the reason I was cleaning. "Into my eyes." He ordered stiffly. I refused still and he sighed, he lifted up my chin with his index finger to look at him properly. His skin still hadn't made contact with mine, he wears gloves every time, only the moon goddess knows why. I don't know what he saw in my eyes, but when his eyes clashed with mine, they melted back into the warm brown orbs. "You were crying?" He asked, a panicked expression marred his face before it disappeared as soon as it came. I sniffled slightly. If he cleaned at me so intensely, I'd have disappeared from my room or cleaned all traces of tears on my face. So pathetic. "Did I hurt you?" He sounded hurt. "And please, don't start with 'your majesty' s**t again. Call me Kylen." "I just remembered something from my past, you did not hurt me." I replied, hurriedly wiping off streaks of tears from my face. His face was still set in that stoic one, void of emotion. "Uh.. Okay." He sounded uncomfortable. I never expected the Mighty Lycan King to comfort me. I'd even be stunned if she offered an ounce of comfort to me. He stepped back a little and I almost whimpered at the loss of warmth and spicy scent that surrounded me. "You don't need to work overtime just so you can clear debt quickly. Or don't you like it here? Is anyone still maltreating you? I mean, other than Aiden, whom I've dealt with." He bombarded me with questions. I winced at the remembrance of Aiden. I never got the time to reminisce on the almost successful rape. I'd have lost my virginity to a scumbag who only felt he had the right to have s*x with me because he was my supervisor and he found me pretty. "No! I really love it. I mean, it's fun working with Helen and the other kitchen staff. I can't die working here, right?" I chuckled. "By over stressing?" Kylen asked sassily. I only sighed in response. I won't say anything about me cleaning once awhile again, since he seems to be hiding something. There must be a reason as to why he was angry with that. I decided to change the subject. "I have never got the chance to thank you since yesterday. Thank you for saving me. I don't know what would have happened if you had not saved me." Kylen gritted his teeth, almost as if suppressing an outburst. I looked down to see he had clenched his fists. How did I manage to make him angry every time? "It's nothing. No one deserves to be assaulted," he replied. An awkward silence befell us after that. Kylen cleared his throat. "I need to get back to work," he said. "You don't have to exit the room, I'm done with cleaning. You came here to work out. I'll just leave you alone to do your thing." "I only needed to ease some stress, which is successful now." He smirked at me. Oh my God! He smirked! Kylen Nova showed an expression on his face other than anger and boredom. And to top it all, he SMIRKED at me! This means an end. "Alora! Are you okay?" Kylen's voice broke my reverie. "I'm perfectly fine. , it was just lost somewhere in my head," I replied. "See you at dinner then." He retorted and turned around to leave. "Dinner?" I asked in confusion. Kitchen assistants don't eat with pack members, we either eat before they do or after they do. It's a lot of stress preparing and dishing the food already. "Yes, dinner. Tonight is the full moon, all shifters, irrespective of the status on each territory have to dine together before running through the woods as a pack," he explained. My heart skipped a beat at this. I've almost forgotten about the full moon, the night where I get humiliated the most in my former pack since I'm the only one without a wolf. At times, I'd try to hide, but since werewolves' senses get heightened on a full moon, pack members would locate my hiding place and drag me out for me to be used as an object of mockery. A day after the full moon is always worse, as while everyone is talking about everything they experienced on their hunt, I'm wallowing in self-pity and depression. There's no greater thing than feeling like an odd ball in a place you are meant to feel at home. I just seemed to find a bit of warmth here that couldn't be snatched away from either. Was I cursed to never be happy? My throat got restricted at the remembrance of the aftermath of full moons for me, I couldn't breathe. Black coated my vision and my head started ringing loudly. My butt landed on something concrete which I think is the flor due to how cold it was. I felt someone calling my name from a distance, hands prying at my body. Cold droplets of water jolted me back to reality. I looked at my surroundings through hooded lids to see that I was still in the gym room. "Alora." A deep husky voice said above me. It's Kylen. I just had a panic attack. I haven't had one in two years. "You had a full blown panic attack after I mentioned the full moon. Are you alright?" He asked. I stood up with wobbly legs. "I just needed to rest, guess I'd just sleep a little bit before lunch." I all but stormed out of the room even though it felt like the palace was crashing down on me. After three tumbles and running into several maids and guards, I made it to my bunk. I sank down on it, the tornado of tears falling finally. I cried till I felt numb. "Why me?" I questioned the moon goddess. I felt like an empty, a useless vessel without a wolf. Although my senses of smell, sight and hearing are somehow heightened, I lack other attributes of being a werewolf. ~ I stood up from my bed after an hour to start the preparation for lunch. Lunches aren't as crowded as dinner or breakfast, since most people either eat at work or just skip lunch. After preparing dinner, we were told to start the preparation of the barbecue for tonight. I had a plan in store already as to why I wouldn't join them. "Alora, since your work here is done, can you just help them in bringing out the chairs?" Helen asked. "Of course," I replied. I entered the palace to assist the servants since the palace is running out of extra help today. I went into the store room to see my worst nightmare; Aiden. He must have caught my scent because he swiveled around when I entered through the door. "If it's not my favorite slave," he sneered. Goosebumps appeared on my skin and my breathing quickened, the events of how he almost had his way with me just catching up on me. It was only two of us in the room. With large strides, he moved closer to me and closed the door, cornering me. I felt so trapped and really scared, but I decided not to let it show. I can't let him know how pathetic I was. "Fancy meeting you here." I said with an unfriendly smirk, even though I knew I was playing with fire. "Have you forgotten your place, slave?" He asked angrily. "Guess who's the slave amongst us now? At least, I no longer scrub the floors." I chuckled, still maintaining a cool composure even though I was shaking inside. "You b***h!" Aiden growled out. "I'd advise you to keep it down. Wouldn't want to embarrass yourself more than you've done in the hands of the guards you've once controlled, would you?" I asked bitterly. He could decide to end my life right there but I know he wouldn't go against Kylen, he wouldn't dare. I heard the rumors of what happened to him after he tried to have his way with me. Someone decided to open the door after I threatened him, his eyes ablaze with anger. Aiden moved closer to me, as if to intimidate me, but I did not cower a bit, not physically at least. "Don't think the king will save you the next time I destroy that little p***y of yours." He whispered so low in my ear. The i***t waited for the intruder to leave because he knew they would have caught up with what he said. "I'd like to see you try," I replied. "I wouldn't say that if I were you. With a mindlink, your filthy father would be dead. I might be stripped of my status, i still have connections." He threatened.
