Chapter 1
The heavy iron door of the Great Hall slammed shut against the stone frame, bringing a violent rush of freezing mountain air into the dim, suffocating room.
The draft flickered the wall torches, casting long, dancing shadows across the crowd of roaring wolves.
Astraia Vance kept her chin tucked tightly toward her chest, her fingers gripping the edges of a heavy oak tray loaded with sticky, empty ale mugs.
She moved like a shadow along the perimeter of the sunken stone sparring pit, taking care to keep her posture slouched.
Her oversized, frayed tunic hung over her narrow shoulders, masking the tight, coiled muscle beneath the fabric.
For five years, Astraia had played the part of the meek, rankless servant girl to perfection.
She let the drunk guards shove her out of their path. She let the cooks dump cold scrap oats into her wooden bowl.
She let the pack elders treat her like a invisible ghost. But behind her downcast eyes, Astraia was never sleeping.
Every single day, she mapped the hall. She memorized every guard’s favorite striking hand, noted their sluggish footwork after two mugs of honey-mead, and located every blind spot in the Iron Ridge fortress.
She was saving every copper she could pinch, waiting for the spring thaw to slip past the border guards and vanish forever.
In the center of the dirt pit, a heavy thud echoed above the noise of the feast, followed by a chorus of drunken cheers.
Alphaean stood tall in the center of the arena, his dark hair damp with sweat and tied back with a leather strip.
His fur-lined vest was open at the front, showing off the fresh, angry battle scars of a newly crowned Alpha heir.
Beneath the heavy soles of his leather boots lay an older pack warrior, clutching his ribs and coughing up mouthfuls of dirt.
"Weak!" Alphaean barked, his voice ringing across the stone rafters. He tossed his blunted wooden practice sword into the dust with a contemptuous flick of his wrist.
"Is there not a single male in this room who can last more than thirty seconds against me? If a horde of rogues hits our eastern border tonight, half of you will be butchered in your sleep!"
Self-conscious mutters rippled through the lower-ranking guards near the back tables. Men suddenly looked down into their ale cups, eager to avoid their future Alpha’s glaring gray eyes.
High above the pit, on the raised wooden platform reserved for the pack’s elite families, a soft, musical laugh cut through the quiet.
Sienna, the Beta’s daughter, leaned delicately over the carved oak railing.
She wore a tailored dress of crimson silk that stood out starkly against the dreary grey stone of the hall.
Her manicured fingers toyed with a heavy gold pendant at her throat as her dark eyes scanned the room, searching for an easy target.
Her gaze landed squarely on Astraia.
"Careful, Alphaean," Sienna teased, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness that carried across the quiet room.
"You are scaring the help. You might kill the poor orphan girl just by looking at her too hard."
Alphaean’s head snapped toward the edge of the pit. A cruel, arrogant smirk curled his lip as his eyes locked onto Astraia.
"Astraia," Alphaean called out, stepping toward the wooden barrier. "Come here, stray."
Astraia stopped dead in her tracks. Her thumbs pressed so hard into the oak tray that the wood groaned beneath her grip.
"My Lord?" she asked, keeping her tone raspy and submissive.
"Step into the pit and pick up a sword," Alphaean ordered, waving a dismissive hand.
"Our warriors look tired. Give the hall a show. Let us see what the absolute lowest rank of the Silver Moon pack can manage."
Snickers and quiet mocking laughter broke out at the surrounding tables.
Astraia slowly set her heavy wooden tray down on a nearby bench. Keep the act alive, she reminded herself, controlling the steady rhythm of her heart.
Play the terrified servant. Take three clumsy swings, let him knock the weapon from your hand, drop to the dirt, and let them laugh. Survival is all that matters.
She stepped down into the damp dirt of the pit with hesitant, unsteady steps. Astraia reached down and picked up the discarded wooden sword.
It was heavy and intentionally unbalanced, weighted to favor an attacker, but she held it loosely, letting her wrists wobble as if the timber were too heavy for her arms.
"Whenever you are ready, stray," Alphaean mocked, spreading his arms wide and dropping his guard completely. "I won't even raise my hands."
Astraia took a shaky step forward. She dragged the tip of the wooden blade through the dirt, lifted it with an awkward grunt, and swung a slow, wide arc toward his left flank—a telegraphed, pathetic strike that any untrained child could avoid.
Alphaean didn't bother to dodge. He simply reached out his right hand, intending to catch the wooden blade in his bare palm and yank it from her grip to complete the humiliation.
His bare skin brushed her fingers.
A violent, unseen shockwave slammed into Astraia’s chest like a falling boulder, knocking the breath clean out of her lungs.
A blinding golden spark flashed behind her eyelids, smelling sharply of ozone, hot copper, and burning pine needles.
Deep within the darkest, hidden cavern of her core, an ancient, frozen lock shattered into dust.
Alphaean gasped violently. He stumbled back two full steps, his hand snapping to his chest right over his heart.
His gray eyes flared, shifting instantly into a glowing, luminescent amber.
A suffocating silence fell over the Great Hall. The clatter of plates, the pouring of ale, the murmurs of the crowd—everything ceased in a split second.
The heavy, unmistakable pressure of a fated mate bond exploded into the atmosphere, thick enough to choke on.
"You?" Alphaean whispered. His face twisted from sheer disbelief into a look of absolute, venomous disgust.
Sienna stood up so fast her heavy high-backed chair screeched violently against the stone floor, nearly tipping over.
"Alphaean! What is that?! What just happened?!"
Alphaean ignored her.
He took two long, furious strides across the dirt, stopping inches from Astraia.
His gaze dragged down her mud-smudged cheeks, her frayed clothes, and the dull silver servant's collar fastened tightly around her throat.
"A rankless, weak stray is supposed to be my mate?" Alphaean spat, the words laced with pure hatred.
He reached into his belt and drew a sleek, short silver dagger.
The refined metal caught the orange torchlight, gleaming dangerously.
Alphaean turned away from her, facing the silent hall of his father's warriors.
"I am destined to lead the Iron Ridge!" Alphaean declared, his voice echoing off the high stone walls.
"I need a Queen with a powerful bloodline to protect our borders and secure our legacy! I will not be dragged down by a nameless, worthless parasite!"
He spun back around, stepping close enough for Astraia to smell the bitter scent of sweat and wine on his breath.
Without a second of hesitation, Alphaean pressed the razor-sharp tip of the silver blade against the skin of her collarbone.
"I, Alphaean of the Silver Moon Pack, reject you, Astraia Vance, as my mate."
He sliced the silver blade sideways across her flesh.
Pain, blinding and apocalyptic, exploded through Astraia's chest.
The silver burned into her skin, sizzling as it severed the fragile, newly awakened spiritual thread binding their souls.
Astraia collapsed to her knees in the dirt, clutching her bleeding neck as a silent scream tore from her throat.
The bond ripped away like raw flesh being peeled from bone, sending waves of agony pouring straight into her bloodstream.
Alphaean stepped back, casually wiping her blood off the silver blade with a silk cloth Sienna handed him over the pit rail.
"Guards," Alphaean commanded, his voice cold and devoid of humanity. "She is an eye-sore. Drag her to the edge of the Mistland Canyon and toss her over. Let the rogues have whatever is left."
