CHAPTER 1
CHAPTER 1
UNEXPECTED PROPOSAL.
Alexander Hilbert stood in his father’s opulent office, the weight of the world pressing down on his shoulders. The room, with its mahogany furniture, floor-to-ceiling windows, and the faint scent of leather and old books, felt both imposing and suffocating. He ran a hand through his neatly combed hair, his mind racing with thoughts of the ultimatum given by the company’s investors. His father’s empire, with its sprawling businesses and properties, could slip through his fingers if he didn’t act quickly.
“Married,” he muttered to himself, pacing the length of the room. “They want me to get married.” The words felt foreign on his tongue, as if he were speaking a language he barely understood. His entire life had been about power, control, and wealth—not love.
He stopped abruptly, turning his gaze to the cityscape outside. Sunlight glinted off the skyscrapers, casting long shadows across the streets below. He needed a solution, and he needed it now. An idea began to form, a desperate plan that could secure his position and appease the investors.
“Jack!” he called, his voice echoing in the grand space. Moments later, Jack, his loyal secretary, appeared at the door, his expression attentive.
“Yes, Mr. Hilbert?” Jack’s voice was calm, a stark contrast to Alexander’s agitation.
“I need you to inform me of any female candidates who come in for an interview. I’ll handle them personally,” Alexander said, his tone brooking no argument.
Jack raised an eyebrow but nodded. “Understood, sir. May I ask why?”
Alexander’s jaw tightened. “Just do it, Jack. It’s crucial.”
Days later, Aria Leonard walked into the company’s sleek, modern reception area. Her heart pounded in her chest as she clutched her resume, hoping for a chance to escape her suffocating home life. Audrey, her stepfather, had made her life a living hell, and this job was her ticket to freedom.
“Ms. Leonard?” a voice called, snapping her out of her thoughts. She looked up to see Jack, who gave her a professional smile. “Mr. Hilbert will see you now.”
Aria followed Jack through a maze of glass-walled offices, her nerves tingling with anticipation. When she entered Alexander’s office, she was struck by its grandeur. The walls were lined with bookshelves, and a massive desk dominated the space. Alexander stood behind it, his piercing blue eyes locking onto hers.
“Please, have a seat,” he said, his voice smooth but firm. Aria sat down, trying to steady her racing heart.
“I understand you’re here for the assistant position,” Alexander began, flipping through her resume. “Your qualifications are impressive.”
“Thank you, Mr. Hilbert,” Aria replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
Alexander closed the resume and leaned forward, his eyes never leaving hers. “I have a proposition for you, Ms. Leonard. It’s unconventional, but I believe it could be mutually beneficial.”
Aria’s brow furrowed in confusion. “What do you mean?”
Aria’s eyes widened in surprise. "A proposition?"
Alexander slid a contract across the desk. "I need to marry to secure my position in this company. I’m proposing a marriage of convenience. In exchange, you'll receive a generous financial settlement far beyond what this job could offer."
Aria stared at the contract, her mind racing. Memories of Audrey's cruelty and her mother's indifference flooded back. This could be her escape, but could she trust Alexander she asked inwardly.
Aria’s mouth went dry. This was not what she had expected. “Marriage? But… Why me?”
“Because you need this job, and I need someone who can play the part,” Alexander said bluntly. “Think about it. It’s a business arrangement, nothing more. Once the investors are satisfied, we can part ways, and you’ll be well compensated.”
Aria’s mind whirled with possibilities. The memory of Audrey’s cruelty and the desire for a better life battled with the shock of Alexander’s proposal. She felt a cold sweat forming on her brow. “I… I need time to think about it.”
“Of course,” Alexander said, his expression softening slightly. “Take all the time you need. But remember, the offer stands only if you agree soon.”
As Aria left the office, her emotions were a tangled mess of fear, hope, and uncertainty. She glanced back at the imposing doors that had closed behind her, knowing that whatever decision she made would change her life forever.
A few days later, after much contemplation and desperation, Aria made her decision. She signed the contract, sealing her fate. Alexander wasted no time organizing an extravagant wedding to impress the investors. The grand ballroom of the Hilbert mansion was transformed into a spectacle of opulence. Cascading flowers, glittering chandeliers, and tables set with fine china and crystal created an atmosphere of surreal beauty.
Aria stood in a private suite, her wedding dress a delicate masterpiece of lace and silk. The distant hum of guests arriving, the murmur of voices, and the clinking of glasses filled the air, creating a symphony of anticipation.
A soft knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. "Aria, it’s time," called Emily, the efficient wedding planner, peeking in.
Aria took a deep breath and nodded. "I’m ready."
The ceremony was a dazzling blur of lights and sounds. As Aria walked down the aisle, the scent of roses enveloped her, mingling with the delicate fragrance of her bouquet. She met Alexander’s gaze, his face a mask of determination and subtle anxiety.
"Do you, Alexander Hilbert, take Aria Leonard to be your lawfully wedded wife?" the officiant’s voice rang out, clear and authoritative.
"I do," Alexander replied firmly, his voice steady.
"And do you, Aria Leonard, take Alexander Hilbert to be your lawfully wedded husband?"
"I do," Aria responded, her voice surprisingly steady.
They exchanged rings, the cool metal sliding onto her finger feeling both like a shackle and a lifeline. Alexander’s lips brushed hers in a practiced kiss, sealing their agreement. Applause erupted from the guests, a cacophony of approval and well-wishes.
Among the guests was Clark, Alexander’s best friend. He had been by Alexander's side since the beginning of this ruse, but his feelings for Aria complicated matters. From the moment she walked into the office for her interview, Clark had been captivated by her. He had held back his feelings when Alexander revealed his plan, but seeing them together now stirred a deep, unfulfilled longing.
Clark found a quiet corner of the room, away from the prying eyes and idle chatter. He leaned against a pillar, his mind racing.
"Aria," he muttered under his breath, staring at her across the room. "Why did you have to be the one Alexander chose for this sham of a marriage?"
His gaze softened as he watched her, the way she moved gracefully, even under the weight of this charade. "I remember that day you walked into the office. There was something about you—an air of quiet strength, an unspoken kindness in your eyes. And yet, here we are, playing these twisted games."
He clenched his fists, the frustration boiling inside him. "I could treat you so much better. I wouldn’t need any of this pretense. We could be real, honest with each other. But instead, I have to watch you suffer through this, tied to Alexander."
Clark's thoughts darkened as he glanced at Alexander, laughing and talking with other guests, seemingly without a care in the world. "Does he even realize what he has? Or is he too blinded by his schemes and ego?"
He sighed deeply, the weight of his unspoken feelings almost too much to bear. "If only you knew, Aria. If only you knew how much I care, how much I want to protect you from all of this. But how can I, when I’m tangled in this mess myself?"
Clark took a deep breath, resolving to act on his feelings. He knew it wouldn’t be easy, but for Aria, he was willing to face whatever came his way.
Watching Aria and Alexander pretend to be a happy couple stirred a plan in Clark’s mind. If Alexander and Aria’s marriage was just a facade, maybe he had a chance to get closer to her. Determined to act on his feelings, Clark decided to host a party at his house. He hoped it would provide the perfect opportunity to execute his own plans.
