347 Words
Eleanor began searching for Rose Bennett. After several weeks, she found an old genealogy record that led her to another town. There, she discovered Rose's granddaughter, Margaret Bennett. When Eleanor introduced herself, the elderly woman immediately became emotional. "You found the letters." Eleanor froze. "You knew about them?" "My grandmother talked about Thomas until the day she died." "Did she know Clara?" "She did." "What happened?" Margaret invited Eleanor inside. On the living room wall hung a photograph of Thomas and Clara. "They loved each other," Margaret said. "I know." "But there was something they never told anyone." "What?" Margaret looked at Eleanor. Another was addressed to Margaret Grace. The third had Eleanor's name written on it. Eleanor stared at it in disbelief. "How could Thomas have written this for me?" Margaret smiled sadly. "He didn't." "Then who did?" "Clara." Eleanor opened Clara's letter that evening. The handwriting was older and weaker than the writing in the original letter. But every word was clear. Clara explained that after years of separation, she and Thomas had finally reunited. They had forgiven the people who had kept them apart. But forgiveness did not erase the years they had lost. Clara wrote that she sometimes wondered what their lives would have been like if they had simply spoken honestly in 1945. Then came the sentence that made Eleanor stop. Do not mistake forgiveness for forgetting. Clara had forgiven William. But she never forgot what happened. She wanted Eleanor to understand something. Some wounds become part of our history. But they don't have to become our future. At the end of the letter, Clara wrote: Tell your grandmother that I kept her promise. Eleanor stared at the words. Her grandmother had promised Clara something. But what?
