The following morning, Eleanor drove to the cemetery. Daniel came with her. They walked together beneath a sky filled with soft gray clouds. Eleanor carried the ring in a small box. When they reached Clara's grave, she knelt and placed the box beside the flowers. "I don't know if you can hear me," Eleanor whispered, "but I think this belonged to you." Daniel stood quietly beside her. Eleanor opened the box. The gold ring caught the sunlight. For a moment, she imagined Clara as a young woman, standing at the train station in her blue dress, waiting for the man she loved. Then Eleanor imagined Clara many years later, older and wiser, finally sitting beside Thomas beneath the willow tree. She smiled. "They found each other eventually," Eleanor said. Daniel nodded. "That's what matters." Eleanor looked at him. "Is it?" "Yes." She thought about all the years Thomas and Clara had lost. "Would you be willing to lose eight years?" Daniel immediately shook his head. "No." "Neither would I." He reached for her hand. "Then let's not waste any more time." Eleanor smiled. The lesson of Thomas and Clara's story had finally become their own.
