That evening, Eleanor and Daniel returned to Willow Hill House.
Eleanor placed a blank sheet of paper on the kitchen table.
Daniel looked at her curiously.
"What are you doing?"
"Writing a letter."
"To whom?"
"To each other."
Daniel smiled.
"Why?"
"Because Thomas and Clara lost too much time because they never got to say everything they wanted to say."
She handed him a sheet of paper.
"Write what you would say if you knew you might never get another chance."
Daniel became serious.
They sat across from each other and began writing.
Eleanor wrote about the years she had spent pretending she didn't miss him.
She wrote about the nights she wondered where he was.
She wrote about the things she should have said.
Daniel wrote about leaving.
About regret.
About how many times he had almost called.
About how afraid he had been that she no longer wanted him.
When they finished, neither wanted to read the other's letter.
They didn't need to.
The letters weren't promises.
They were truths.
Eleanor folded hers and placed it beside Thomas's original letter.
Daniel did the same.
Two letters from the past.
Two letters from the present.
Different generations.
The same lesson.
