EPISODE 2: Clara

255 Words
The next morning, Eleanor visited the local historical society. She showed the photograph to Mrs. Anderson, an elderly historian who had lived in Willow Hill her entire life. The woman's expression changed immediately. "Where did you get this?" "It belonged to my grandmother." Mrs. Anderson carefully examined the photograph. "That's Thomas Bennett." Eleanor's breath caught. "You know him?" "Everyone in town knew him." "What happened to him?" Mrs. Anderson became quiet. "He went to war." "I know." "He came home." Eleanor stared at her. "He did?" Mrs. Anderson nodded. "But that's not the story people remember." "What happened?" The old woman looked toward the window. "Thomas came home in November of 1945." Eleanor's heart raced. "But the letter says he was supposed to return in October." Mrs. Anderson shook her head. "That's where the mystery begins." Mrs. Anderson told Eleanor that Clara had waited for Thomas at the train station. She waited every afternoon. November passed. December came. Still, Thomas never appeared. Then one winter morning, Clara disappeared. No one knew where she went. Some believed she left town. Others believed she had married someone else. But Mrs. Anderson remembered one detail. "Clara left behind a suitcase." "Why?" "Because she planned to leave with Thomas." Eleanor looked at the old photograph. "What happened to Thomas?" Mrs. Anderson sighed. "That's the strange part." According to town records, Thomas had returned. But according to his family, he had never come home. Eleanor felt a chill. Someone had lied. And the letter in her hands might reveal why.
