Chapter 1
Here she was as usual, sitting in the courtyard with her arms folded across her chest, thinking about how miserable life has been, that she couldn't notice the presence of someone behind her.
Who would blame her when she has been faced with a lot of dramatic issues lately, first it was her son who graduated from the university with nothing to show for it or her husband who might be spending his last days in prison.
And me whom she has to sit and watch being married off just to secure her husband's life.
Aunty Nathan has been the one taking care of me and her other children ever since my mother, who is her sister, died.
I feel pity that she has to go through all these even in her old age.
I didn't want to bother them at this point but the issue at hand matters to me as well as it does to her. After All, it is about my future.
"I think it is high time I snapped her right out of her thoughts", I walked slowly towards her with fear she might experience a raid because of how lost she was in thought.
"Aunt Nathan" I called out as I tapped her left shoulder. "Hmm…." She sighed and turned up to me.
My heart melted as I saw tears in her eyes and her face was puffy as one who hasn't slept for about three days now.
Anyone who looks at her can tell that she is passing through a lot.
"Are you ready to go?" she asked me, using her hand to wipe her eyes."Yes, I am, "are you ok?" I asked in curiosity.
She stood up and adjusted her lace black skirt that she always wears every weekend.
Her face was bent as she was trying her best to conceal her tears from me.
"I will walk you to the store today," she said as she smiled slightly at me.
"why? " I wondered.
"Ever since our family started experiencing this toxic situation I haven't had much time to talk to you".
"Aunt I'm not worried about that, I understand and am always here if u need me ok? " I said as I tried to lay off the conversation because I was almost late for work.
She stood there trying to withhold her words. I knew she had a lot to tell me but that was not the right time to chit-chat.
I slowly waved my hands to bid her goodbye and she waved back at me as I dashed out of the main entrance.
I adjusted my brown hand satchel towards my shoulder. I opened it to grab my phone to check the time." oh my gosh am late" I muttered as I hurriedly hastened my footsteps.
"I am doomed, Mrs Cecilia will sack me." I thought to myself as I reached out for my purse to take my last coins to board a curb.
Mrs Cecilia is my madam. I have been working for her at the bakery shop for about two weeks now. She is a nice woman despite being my madam, I also see her as a friend I can confide in.
I reached the shop but the door was still closed. I was surprised, it was five minutes after eight and no one had arrived apart from me and now I had to wait after all my struggle to be on time.
I slanted back against the door regretting why I didn't just wait and listen to what Aunt Nathan wanted to say.
My face was blurred." But Mrs Cecilia should be here by now, even Tina." I disputed to myself like someone trying to convince herself of something.
Immediately, I saw Tina striding towards me, swinging her hands like a kindergarten student who was on her way home from school.
I looked at her angrily, trying to find the best word to describe her stupidity. She wasn't even bothered that she was late but kept on chewing her gum like a goat… Sorry to say.
"I have been waiting here for who knows how long… "And so?" She interrupted me. Using her hand to give me a sign to get out of her way. I exhaled heavily, calming myself down not to pick a fight this early morning.
Tina is my co-worker, she has been working here even before I came. Despite her quarrels, I always try my best to avoid her problems.
We both entered the shop. I took off my bag and dropped it on the counter.
"Where is Miss Cecilia?" I asked anxiously.
"She might be on her way coming or she is on leave". I laughed "Never" Mrs Cecilia on leave? Everyone knows her to be a workaholic, even if she was, she would have informed us.
I took the napkin hanging from the door handle and hurried to start my cleanup before the customers would start arriving.
As usual, I did the cleaning while Tina bakes the pastries. When we were done I looked at the clock hanging on the wall along the window side. It was 10:51.
I was now certain that Mrs Cecilia was not coming today. But I was contemplating what could have happened. I guess is me and Tina now. "woshhh" I breathed out.
It was a very busy day at the shop. We had to multitask ourselves, I cleaned, set tables, attended to customers, took orders and made accounts while Tina did the rest.
And before we were done for the day it was already five in the evening we had to quickly pack up.
We were done packing. Tina locked the shop and handed over the keys to me.
I was baffled about why I got to keep the keys. but before I could speak up she already took off like a rocket and again swung her hands In the same awkward direction. with her short transparent blue gown that was showing all her confidential areas.
I looked at the key in my hand and then back again to her. " Why wouldn't she give me the keys when lateness is her hobby" I giggled as I made my way into the dark.
It was my first time walking on the road at that late hour, I was a bit scared but I had to enjoy the frostiness of the weather.
All that was on my mind was how Aunt Nathan would have strained herself worrying about me.
I reached for my phone to call her when I remembered I had forgotten my bag on the counter and my phone was in it. It was too late to go back for it.
I had to just endure the frustration and manage my way home.
The street lights were on and all I could hear were cars swishing by. I folded my hand and kept on walking, looking left and right as if someone was after me.
Our house from the shop was a little bit far, I would have boarded a taxi but I was out of money, the only money I had was the two coins I took from Clara, my aunt's daughter. But I spent it while coming to work.
Now I had no other choice but to trek.
I was still swimming in my illusions when a car suddenly stopped by me. At first, I thought the owner was trying to step down so I continued walking. That wasn't the case cause the car still kept on coming behind me.
Now I was terrified and my heart started panting." I guess it is time to run but that will be immature" I said trying to convince myself.
What will happen next?
"Young lady," a voice called out.
I ignored it, but it kept on repeating that I had to stop and look back.
It was the owner of the car who was calling me. "me?" I asked, pointing towards myself. " Yes you, can I have a minute of your time, please? ". I was frightened but at the same time eager to know what he wants from me.
I sluggishly walked towards him.
He seemed very rich. The car was not one that low class, not even a second class would ride.
It was a red Mercedes Benz, it looked spotless. I stood in front of him gazing at his face. He was Darm stunning, his eyes were emerald and piercing through me, his lips were pink and juicy, and his pointed nose was just perfect with his wavy hair falling down his neck. He looked like he was from another planet, in fact, a movie star.
"It was rude to stare. My apologies."
I was revived from my thoughts when he asked where I was headed. I was speechless at the sound of his voice. It was a sweet melody to one's ears and all I did was point straight.
He smiled and bent his head. Then I realized I had made a mockery of myself.
"Am sorry I'm on my way home" I said, turning my face away in remorse. " How can a beautiful lady like you walk all by yourself by this time of the night," he said as he scanned me from head to toe.
He pulled a blunt face and I knew he didn't like what he saw. "Hop in, let me give you a ride". I have known rich men to be arrogant and selfish, so why would this one be different?
Looking at how late it was I had no other option than to just abide by the offer.
I looked at him suspiciously while walking to the other side of the car. He opened the door for me to get in.
I scraped my long flawed gown to cover all exposed parts of my body. He just sat there waiting for me to be done.
I entered the car slowly and we drove off.
