“do you ever sit in silence and find all the things you ran away from, never left?”
**
“For the absolutely last time Matthew, I will not tell you a damn thing.” I snapped at him. He had been all but interrogating me since the whole Phoebe incident.
“You do not speak to me like that,” Matthew barked, and when I should have backed down in fear, I just stood taller.
“I do not care. You are my boss, you don't need to know a single damn thing about me.” The anger was boiling in my veins from Phoebe hitting me, and now Matthew asking me about things I wanted to forget.
“If you are abused, I want to know so I can help you! And if you react like that in my building, I sure as hell deserve to know.”
“React like what? She slapped me, for heavens sake! Get it in your head, I am not abused. I live alone in my apartment, you have been there. The only friend I have is Kaitlyn who I happened to be talking with when you barged in my apartment the other night.” I rubbed my face in annoyance, the anger still boiling and I knew I had to get out of there before I started throwing things.
“And yet you had a panic-attack the first day you were here, did anyone hit you, hm?” He wondered out loud, “No. Ida was talking with you.” I balled my fists and clenched my teeth.
“I did not have a 'panic-attack', I had an anxiety-attack because everyone talked about that I needed luck to get a job here. And apparently they were right. I understand why no-one would want to be here.” I walked out of the door in angry strides and slammed it hard after me. I heard a crash from behind the door but thought nothing about it.
I grabbed my lucky bag, though I started to wonder if I needed to change its name, and went down the hall. Ida was sitting behind her desk again and looked up at me. “I heard yelling, is everything okay?”
I laughed out sarcastically, “Everything is just great. I think I just quit.” Her jaw hit the floor just like mine had done earlier and she got a sad puppy look in her eyes.
“No, do not quit! You are the only one I have liked thus far. I can't take any more wannabes and sluts that just want to f**k him and take his money.” she rambled and told me about all the other girls who had been here for an interview.
“I am going down to talk with Skye, do you wanna come with me?” I asked her, cutting her off from telling me about this one girl who had turned up in just a black lace bra and small shorts.
“Uh yes! I like Skye. She is so sweet.” She jumped up from her chair just as the elevator opened up.
“Hey Skye!” Ida shouted when we stepped out, making Skye jump five meters up in the air and losing her grip on a stack of papers. She clutched the part of her shirt where the heart would be, and looked at us annoyed. I held up my hands in surrender, “It was Ida.” While Ida just shrugged.
“What are you two doing down here?” Skye asked as she crutched down to pick up the papers.
“Safiya just quit.” Ida said with blame and sadness in her voice. Skye stood up straight and yet again lost the grip on her papers,
“You did what?!” she whined like a little kid. I shook my head, pushing Ida a little bit.
“I didn't quit, well maybe I did. I am not entirely sure to be honest.” I shrugged my shoulders with the statement and avoided eye contact with either of them.
“How can you not know?” Skye wondered and scrunched up her nose a bit. I chuckled inwardly,
“Okay so, I was just sitting at my desk being an assistant you know, and this girl comes up to me and asks if I am the new slut-” Both Skye and Ida interrupted me to say 'Phoebe', making them look at each other with that knowing glance. I told her the story with Phoebe, and ended it with our disagreement

“Are you sure that you are okay?” Matthew asked when I stepped into his office and he had closed the door.
“I am quite certain Mr. Frazier.” And I was okay. I really was. Except that she had slapped me, but that wasn't the thing on my mind. They were.
“How come she hit you?” He motioned for me to sit down in the same chair as when I had the interview, and sat himself in his chair.
“She had asked if I was the new 'slut', and when I had ignored she became irritated and asked me again. I gave her a witty answer which she didn't take well and decided to slap me. That is where you and Mr. Bauer came out.” I explained. His eyes darkened and I got a little afraid if it was my fault, or hers.
“What did you mean when you said it wasn't the worst you had experienced?” he asked the question I was waiting for.
“Oh you know, I broke my arm as a kid. That was worse than this.” It was only half the truth though, I didn't feel like mentioning that it was someone else who did it to me.
“Uh-huh. And you are sure that is everything?” He narrowed his eyes at me, trying to see the truth in my green eyes.
“Yes.” No.
“You see, I think you are lying to me and I don't like people lying to me. Tell me the truth Safiya.” He demanded, his brown eyes turned black and I swear I could see a cloud with thunder and lighting over his head.
“There i no need to get mad. I am not telling you anything, it is my private life.” I hissed. It had been a fine conversation, but I knew this would happen. If I hadn't had that stupid anxiety-attack the first day, we wouldn't be here right now.
“I need to know if anyone is hurting you, can't you understand that?” My eyes softened, I saw the flash of sorrow in his eyes and I knew it wasn't because of me. Something had happened.
“Why? This is the second day that you see me. I mean nothing to you, other than I am your assistant.”
“You are working in my company, and I want to make sure that none of my co-workers are abused or other ways harmed.” He fumed and hit the desk with his fists. I stood up to yell at him, being tired of him trying to act like he was in charge of me.

“And then I said that I understood why nobody would work here, and slammed the door.”
“But you can't just leave us, everyone are so stuck up here.” Skye protested and wrapped her arms around herself, “You are actually one of the few people who stopped to ask about my name.” That last sentence tugged at my heart strings and I couldn't but give her a sad smile.
“If he can't respect when I say that I am not abused, then I am not sure that I want to be here.” I sat my black bag between my legs and took off my blazer to show my arms, “No marks, bruises whatsoever. This scar is from when I broke my arm and had to have it operated and this is from when I cut my arm going down a rollercoaster.” I pointed at the different scars, trying to prove that nothing happened as of right now.
“We believe you Saf, Matthew is just being a stubborn ass.” Ida said while Skye nodded to her statement.
“Do I have to have a conversation with Jackson, Ida?” Matthew wondered out loud from behind us. I swear if he kept up with this sneaking up on us, I would have a heart-attack soon.
“No sir,” Ida mumbled, “We were just trying to get Saf to stay with us, right Skye?” Skye was looking down on the ground while fiddling with her hands, but she nodded when her name came up.
“It is Ms. Roosevelt own decision if she wants to stay, there is no need for name calling.” Matthew stated with a hard stare towards Ida.
“I am sure Jackson would agree with me. You haven't been acting very nice towards her.” Ida pointed out and made that 'tsk tsk' sound.
“Look,” I said interrupting their little fight, “I will stay on one condition. You, Mr. Frazier, stop asking if I am being abused. Now it is just starting to be annoying, not that it wasn't already.”
“Fine,” he grunted. “Go fetch me a coffee, then.” He spun around on his heel and gone he was.
“So, it is Friday today. Anyone up for a club?” Ida asked as we made our way into Starbucks to get some coffee for the bosses.
“Uh I am not sure,” Skye mumbled and bit her lip. I think it is so cute how shy she is. We will have to do something about that.
“Come on Skye, we wont leave you alone. I will ask my bestfriend to come, she i not much of a party type either, you two will get along just great!” I gushed with a smile.
“Okay then.” I cheered and Ida did a little dance making Skye laugh, and just in that moment I actually felt like I had someone who I could trust, just as I could trust Kaitlyn. I felt somewhat safe, I couldn't be happier.
“A black coffee for Safiya.” The barista yelled, and .. well yes, if I didn't have to get Mr. Fraziers coffee, maybe I could have been happier. But I was proud of me.

“Kaaaaaaate,” I sang into my phone when she picked up my call, “Some girls from the firm and I are going to a club tonight, and you are coming with us.”
“I have work tomorrow,” she groaned. It sounded like I had just woken her up from a nap.
“But Katieee, you have to meet my new friends. You have always been saying I need to find someone.” I knew I could persuade her into coming with me, besides she is always up for meeting hot guys.
“Alright then, but if there isn't any hot guys I am leaving!” See I told you so. I just chuckled at her answer.
“I am coming to you, see you soon.” I hung up about blowing a thousand kisses, which had become our ritual to show that everything was okay.
I grabbed my phone, a charger and a little white purse to fit most of my stuff in. My keys dangled from my ring finger after I locked my door, I would always keep them in my hand just in case I was jumped or something else. It was a great defense to just stab the person with your keys. Even though Kaitlyn lived just down the street I still didn't feel safe going outside in the dark, and sadly I knew a lot of girls who felt the same way.
Since I had a key to her apartment, and she had one to mine, I locked my self into her apartment and continued into her bedroom.
“The Queen has arrived.” I strutted into the bedroom with my head held hie, swaying my hips and waving that way Mia was told to do in The Princess Diaries.
“Dream on,” Kaitlyn laughed and threw a pillow at me.
“Oi, do not harm the Queen or I will call my bodyguard.” I picked up the pillow and started hitting her, and within a minute we had a full-blown pillow-fight which ended in feathers flying around in the room.
“Uncle, uncle.” she exclaimed, throwing herself down on the bed laughing. I was sitting on my knees in her bed, trying to catch my breath with tears rolling down my cheeks from all the laughing.
“Now, come on up. We have to find some clothes that will make the boys eyes roll back in their skull, and the jaws landing on the floor.” Kaitlyn said as she pulled on my arm and I knew better than to resist.
In this moment I knew right away; I really could not be happier.
