Ava woke up around noon the next day. She rolled over and noticed that Grey was not there. She felt strangely empty. She walked to the bathroom and heard the shower running. She assumed Grey was in there. Remembering her dream, she walked in. Grey was in the tiled shower rinsing off. She couldn’t help but stare. Grey had his hair dripping wet rolling down his face. Her gaze trailed down to his muscular chest and then further. She saw exactly what she expected. Grey looked up at her and studied her expression. She turned red in the face and walked out of the bathroom.
Grey finished up and wrapped a towel around his waist. “Did you like what you saw?” Ava blushed and pretended not to hear Grey.
“Do you know if Marla is up? I would really like to get to the bottom of this mystery.”
“Yes, Nate mind-linked me. Marla drives him crazy, he’s been begging for us to meet.”
“Marla has that affect on people. She likes what she likes and she doesn’t back down.”
“Let’s go to the kitchen then. They are there.”
Grey and Ava walked into the kitchen and Marla was throwing chocolate chips at Nate. Apparently, Nate was a very good baker and was whipping up some chocolate chip cookies.
“Ava, save me from this bore of a man.” Marla joked.
“Sure Marla, why don’t we get straight to the point? What is this big secret?”
Now Marla didn’t know everything about Ava. She didn’t know that Ava was a hybrid. She knew that Ava was special and that she needed protection. Marla’s parents had both died. Her dad, when she was 8 in a fight and her mom just recently. Marla had turned 18 just before her mother passed away of a broken heart. In the werewolf world, when your mate dies you either die or weaken. In her mom’s case, she stayed strong for Marla.
On her mom’s deathbed, she told Marla that Ava needed protection and that they were assigned to her from their alpha years ago. Her mom also knew that when Ava found her mate a lot of things would change. Marla was confused because, as far as she knew, Marla was a human. She has heard of human mates, but thought they were unlikely. She didn’t have time to question because her mom also told her that Ava was adopted. She didn’t know about Ava’s birth parents, but knew that she was somehow related to Alpha Archie.
“Okay Ava, here’s what I know and don’t stop me. This is what my mother told me on her deathbed. You are adopted by Emma and Dan. When you meet your mate your life will change. My job is to protect you. You are most likely not a normal human. “
“Wait, you said Mate? I’m adopted? Your JOB is to protect me?”
“I know this is a lot to handle. I don’t know more than that. I know that I am here to protect you, but I also know that you are my best friend, even if it wasn’t my job.”
“I need a minute.” Ava walked out of the kitchen in search of a private bathroom. Her world started spinning as she replayed the words Marla said. She found a bathroom and sat on the side of the tub. She felt a sort of betrayal, but also felt a bit of loyalty. Marla had always put Ava first no matter what. Even before she knew about her past.
“Well, that was short, sweet, and to the point.” Nate interjected. Marla rolled her eyes. Nate always had something to say.
Grey felt for his mate as he tried to put the pieces together. He thought to himself, if she isn’t human what is she? How will finding her mate affect her greatly? What does this all mean?
“Marla, who is your alpha?”
“Our current Alpha is Alpha Cain of Crest Moon Pack. But, when Ava was adopted the Alpha was Alpha Archie.”
“I will be in contact with Alpha Cain within 24 hours. Maybe he can connect us to Archie.”
“Good luck with that Alpha Archie has been in a coma since Ava was one. He still has his werewolf healing abilities and his brain still has function, but it seems he just can’t wake up.”
“Someone has to know something.” Grey ran his fingers through his hair. He hadn’t been this confused in a long time. His mate had no idea about who she actually was.
“Marla, is Ava meeting me good or bad for her?”
“My mother said her life would change, she didn’t say good or bad.”
Grey went searching for Ava. He could hear her crying in the bathroom. He knocked on the door. “Ava, can I come in?”
“Not right now, Grey.”
He pushed his way in, she didn’t lock the door. He wrapped her up in a great big hug and held her. She felt comforted in a way. She felt safe. He kissed her on the forehead. “Honey, we will get through this.”
She felt this intense urge to kiss him. She had never kissed anyone before. She was into books and school. She wanted to become a doctor and save children from cancer. She didn’t have time to worry about boys. She didn’t even know how to kiss someone. Grey noticed her expression and saw her staring at his lips. He leaned in to kiss her. She pulled away.
“Let’s go and get started then.” Ava looked up to see Grey staring at her with intense admiration. She could feel how proud Grey was of her.
Grey and Ava returned with a passion to find the truth. “Alright Marla, I assume that’s all you know because you have always given it to me straight. The question is, What do we do now?”
“Well, I think we should at least talk with Emma and Dan. Try to find out what they know.”
“And let them know we are okay. I have been gone quite a while.”
